To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HOVEY,
of Springfield, county of Hampden, and State IIS of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Light Extinguishers for Street- Lamps, which improvements are fully set forth in the annexed specification and in the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to gas-burners for use upon street-lamps, which are constructed and adjusted to operate to extinguish the light by reducing the pressure on the street-mains at a given time and it consists in improvements in" the arrangement of the gas-passages, whereby obstructions therein are avoided and the cost of making reduced 5 also, in improved devices for adjusting' the weight of the operating parts, `which are acted upon by the gaspressure to cause a continuous How of gas to the burner under one degree of pressure and to shut off the flow at a certain reduced pressure, and generally of sucha simplified construction as reduces the cost of this class of burnersto a minimum. j
Referring to thedrawings, which consist of three ligures, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my invention, showing a gas-burner thereon. Fig. 2 is a planview ofthe weightregulating and lighting lever with adjusting devices thereon. Fig. 3 is a view of a weight used on said lever.
My improved gas-light extinguisher consists of a body, A, having in it two suitable mercury-cells.substantially like those shown in my patent of March 26, 1878; but instead of constructing said bodyA with gas-passages running horizontally and vertically to and from` the interior of said body, as shown in said patent, I make a direct vertical gas-passage, c, through which the gas can flow into the smaller one of two inverted cups arranged to operate in said cells in* the body in a manner similar to those shown in the above-named patent 5 `and of a cover, I), arranged to be screwed onto the body and provided with a centrally-projecting nipple, as shown, having a vertical passage through it 5 and of a hollow stem, d, carrying a gas-burner on its upper end and two inverted cups, c e', on its lower end, from the interior of one of which gas is discharged through passages i i into the interior of stem d, said stem having a hollow bushing, h, secured toit, which is arranged to shut over the end of said nipple, and having a collar, s, around `it just above said inverted cups, as shown, and of a lever, D, having two prongs at one end, and having a screw-thread cut on its opposite end for the reception of weight-adjusting screws, said lever being arranged to oscillate on the edge of a slot formed in the side of the body A, as shown.
Itis important that extinguishers and regulators of this class should, as far as possible, be constructed `with a view of obviatinga liability to obstruction in the gas-passages leading through them, and with facility for regulating them to any gas-pressure without removing any part of the apparatus, and also with certainty of operation. All 4these advantages are secured by the use of my improved apparatus.
Owing to the slight variations of pressure upon igas mains at different points where street-lamps are located, arising from local causes, it is desirable that means be provided for making the movement of cups c and c more sensitive to varying degrees of pressure than has heretofore been done by adding `directly to or taking weights from' the cups; and it will be observed by moving the weight on the arm of lever D the weight of the parts moved by the gas-pressure can be more delicately .and closely adjusted than has been possibleheretofore.
The operation ot' my invention is as follows, viz: I first lill the cells in body A, in which cups c and c are located, with quicksilver or i glycerine about up tothe dotted line w x, and screw the inlet end B onto the end of the gaspipe in the street-lamp. In this position the gas passes up through passage c into the small cup e, the sides of'which, though not as long as those of cup c', dip far enough into the mercury to prevent the gas from forcing lits way by it, and the superficial area of the top of the cup is so slight that the pressure of the gas upon it is insufficient to lift it and the superimposed parts connected therewith. Therefore it is necessary to bear down on the end of lever D, which oscillates on the edge of a slot in the side of body A, the fork-shaped end of IOO which passes under collar s on stem d, by which movement the cups e and e', stern d, and the burner are all lifted up, drawing` the edge of cup e up out of the mercury. Gas now passes under the edge of cup e into the larger cup, e', and sustains it in a lifted position, allowing the gas to How through directly from it, through passages t t', into the center passage in stem d, and thence n p to the burner.
With the parts in the above-described position, the gas-light will continue until the pressure in the gas-main, and consequently that upon cup c', is reduced, when both cups and the parts connected therewith will drop down,
ycausing the edge of cup c to dip into the inercury and shut oft' they gas-flow. The pressure upon the gas-main under which the apparatus is to continue to allow gas to pass to the burner, and under which the cups e and c must drop down, having been given, the weight upon the screwed end of lever D is adjusted to such a position thereon as will canse the parts to properly act under such pressures.
The most convenient form of weight to use, if any is required, ou the arm of lever D is that shown in Fig. 3, which is placed between the screW-ange n and washer m, and secured there b v kscrewing up nut t.
It is obvious that the said weight-securing parts ymay be made of such weight as to obviate the necessity of a separate Weight as such, or a forni of screw-poise, such as is in common use on some forms of scale-beams, might be employed; but as it is desirable that the adjusting-weights used should be such as can be easily applied and very irmlytxed in place, the form shown I consider the most desirable.
The bushing h, interposed between the end of stern d and the base of the burner, and closing down over the nipple on cover b, is so constructed and applied for the purpose of keeping dust and dirt from getting into case A, while it allows of a free vertical movement of all the parts connected with stem d.
What I-claim as my invention is- 1. In a gas-light extinguisher, the hollow stem d, having the inverted cups e e attached to its lower end, and the passages t' i, leading from Vthe interior of cup e to the interior of said stem, and provided with a collar, s, in combination with an oscillating lever, D, having its fulcrum on body A, and provided with a connterbalance-weight on its outer end, and adjustable thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the body A, provided with mercury-cells, as shown, of the two inverted cups e and c', the hollow stein d, having thereon collar s, and provided with passages leading from cup e to the central passage therein, bushing h, and lever D, provided with a weight adjustable thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
