ORGAN-ACTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,457, dated February 10, 1880,
Application filed November 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH ALBERT MEHMEL, resident of Stralsund, Prussia, Empire of Germ an y, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ghosts of Sound-Boards for Organs and similar musical works, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has for its object an arrangement of mechanism whereby the stops are made the primary part or most important element and the key-board mechanism the secondary or subordinate part of an organ or other wind instrument, as hereinafter described, an d shown by the accompanying drawing, in which- A is the wind-chest; a a, the air-chamber therein I) b, the channels or air-ducts formed in the bearers B, which conduct the air to the pipes. v
C O are the valves hinged to the bearers B, and D D 1) are lever-supporting bars that in their normal position of rest are tilted, as shown, by one of them. These lever-supports are hinged to the supporting-blocks d by means of hinges d, and are connected to the stop pull-bars E by means of the pivoted angle-levers c and the push-wires c, which latter are pivoted to the butts F upon the under side of the hinged bars D, the degree of elevation or depression being regulated by means of the thumb-nuts f. Each hinged bar D has a projection, (1 upon which is pivoted an angle-lever, Gr, adapted to operate the valves (J. The lower end of the lever G is perforated, and through this perforation passes the comiecting-wire g, which connects the lever with the key-bar H, said lower end of the lever G being held in proper position and adjusted by means of the thumb-nuts g.
The outer end of the key-bar H is connected, by means of a wire, lb, and a thumb-nut, h, to the lower end of the arm I of a three-armed lever, L, pivoted at l upon the supportingblock L.
To the outer end of the arm 1 of the lever L the pull-wire M is connected, which, in its turn, is connected in any suitable or preferred mannor with its respective key, (not shown in the drawing,) while the arm I of said lever L carries a counter-weight, L which serves to bring the valve-levers G and the keys back into their normal position of rest when said keys are relieved from pressure, the weight resting upon a bracket or seat, A secured to the frame of the wind-chest A.
A is the base-plate of the wind-chest, made removable, and A are removable heads to the air-chamber, applied airtight in any convenient or preferred manner, so as to furnish proper means of access to the above-described mechanism located within said chamber, either for adjustment or repair.
The operation of the mechanism is as follows: The stops being the [nimary element, when one of them is pulled the hinged leversupports of that stop are tilted downward through the action of the stop-bar E upon the angle-lever 6 and push-wire c, and all the valve-levers corresponding with this stop are brought in a position with their upper or actuating extremities in contact, or nearly in contact, with the projecting faces 01 their respective valves 0. It, now, the. secondary element is brought into action-that is to say, it one or more of the keys in this stop are depressed--their bars H are moved to the right through the action of ihe three-armed levers L, said bars also moving the lower arm of the valve-levers G in the same direction, while the upper arm of said levers is moved in a reverse direction to open their correspondingvalves O and admit the air to the pipes, as will be readily understood and as plainly shown by the accompanying drawin Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters latcut, is
1. The combination, with the wind-chest, its air ducts and valves, and the stop pull-bars E, of the hinged lever-supports D, levers G, push-wires c, and the anglc-levers 6, arranged to operate as and for the purpose specified.
The combination, with the wind-chest, its'air ducts and valves, and the pull-wires M, of the three-armed lever L, bar H, rods g, and levers Gr, arranged to operate substantially as specified.
