Description
o. WOODHULL Vapor-Burnef NO.- 224,371,. Pate nted- Feb; 10, 1880.
ll. FETUS. WWI-WNW. WASHINGTON:
] UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CURTIS wooDHUL OF BUFFALO, 'VNEW YORK.
VAP OR-BU RNER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 224,371, dated February 10, 1880.
, Application filed September 23, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnarls WOODHULL, of the city of Buffalo, in the] county of Erie, in
the Statcof New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Burners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings is a full,
clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in the combination, with the vapor-generatin g chamber,of a flamedeflecting plate, slidingin a dovetail groove transversely in theexterior of the said chamber, j
by which arrangement the effect of the flame is improved, and the swivel-joint heretofore made for that purpose in the vapor-generating; chamber is obviated, and thus the liability of The burner consists'of a cylindrical chamher, 0, screwed-at one end onto the end of the pipe A, and provided at the opposite end with,
the screw-stopple S.
passing transversely through the chamber 0,
and having the usual tapered end entering the gas-outlet of the chamber, and thus controlling the flow of the vapor.
Around the spindle B inthe chamber (3 is packed wire-gauze D, for the purpose of" re taining the flow of the liquid hydrocarbon, and thus aiding the generation of vapor, which vapor is allowed to freely pass through the said packing without carrying with it either.
liquid or solid matter, the latter of which is eliminated by the straining through the wiregauze packing without dangerof clogging the burner-a result which is incident-to the employment of packing composed of metal filings, as hitherto used. I
tionary part of said chamber.
The wire-gauze packing is easily applied to and removed from the spindle B by removing the screw-stopple Son the end of thechamber O, and is in close proximity to the said packing, the burner thus being easily maintained in proper working order. 1 I
E "s the deflecting-plate, designed to spread and enlarge the flame. The requisite adjustability'of this plate has hitherto been to a certain extent obtained by a swivel or loose joint between the vapor-generating section of the chamber 0 ,and the part from which the flame issued. By turning the latter on the axis of the chamber 0 the flame was caused to impingeat various points and angles upon the deflecting-plate E, which was fixed to the sta- The variation, in the angle of deflection failed to produce the desired effect, and the loose .joint frequently 6 5 caused leakage of the vapor.
To overcome these difliculties I provide the deflecting-plate with a dovetail tongue, a, by which it'slides in a corresponding groove, 1), transversely on the exterior of the chamber G. The angle of deflection'is thus maintained unchanged, and the joint in the chamber 0 obviated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 7 5 B is the flame regulating spindle or pin Patent, is'
The combination of the chamber 0, provided with the'transverse dovetail groove 1), and the deflecting-plate E, having the dovetail tongue 0., adapted to slide in the groove b, substan- 8o tially in the manner and for the purpose set forth. t
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed nay-seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in
the county of Onondaga and State of New York, this 17th day of June, 1879.
