Claims.
This invention relates to hand operable cutting tools, more particularly of the detachable blade type.
This invention has utility when incorporated in so-called safety razor character of shaving tools, especially as of light weight with features of ease in ready manipulation and accuracy for nice placement.

In carrying out this invention, a main holder embodying sheet metal or grip I has semi-circular or arched top 2 with parallel sides 3 and inturned bottom flanges 4 extend to abutting region 5- and thereby form tubular way 6. From this tubular way 6 there is forwardly in extension 1 to diametric terminus 8 having inclined seat portion 9 adapted to have placed therein a blade I! having cutting edge II, ledge-forming notched termini l2, and a straight back l3. This straight back 13 rides at the inner side of this diametric portion 8. Complemental to this seat 9 is seat l4 having side shoulders Hi to engage under the notches 12 of the blade. This seat 8, 9, and complementary seat I4 not only locate the portion [3 of the blade at the diameter region for the handle extended, but locate the cutting edge I l of the blade in approximate tangency to the extension of the handle portions 4. with clearance I! provides a way for movement of material severed by the operation of the blade.
This complementary seat member or comb is provided with shield or guide projection l8. From this complementary seat device 14 there is exten- Opening 16 sion l9 approximating the diametrical region of the handle and having overhanging ears 23 cooperating with guides 2| from the handle toward the clamp seat 8, 9. There is thus a directing guide for the complementary clamp M. This clamp I4 is at its terminus 22 away from the clamp 8, 9, engaged by cars 23 of diametrically extending tongue 24 from upstanding portion 25 of slide 26 having rear back portion 21 in the tubular handle. Compression helical spring 28 between the portion 21 and portion 29 tends normally to thrust this connection or actuator 23, 24, yieldably to hold the seat portion M in clamping position with the seat portion 8, 9, for engaging the blade I!) therebetween. The abutment 29 extends from base portion 33 along the inner side of the flanges 4 remote from the portion 26 riding along such flanges 4. This portion 33 has upstanding rack portion 3| and protrudes beyond the handle to have upstanding ledge 32 beyond seat 33. Pivot pin 34, approximating the diameter of the tubular handle, mounts pawl 35 in position to engage the teeth of the rack 3 I. This pawl 35 is on the pivot pin 33 and has remote from the pawl 35 socket 36 in which is located compression spring 31 to plunger 38 against the seat 33 and thereby tends yieldably to hold the pawl 35 in engaging position with the rack 3|. Upon depression of protruding portion 39 toward the seat 33 against the compression spring 31, the pawl 35 may be pulled away from the rack 3| and the spring 28 then position the rack to protrude further from the handle and thereby reduce the compression action or holding for the blade Hi. This may serve as an automatic release for the blade ill to be dropped clear of clamping position. Otherwise one may shift the portion 20 as to the handle for opening the clamp to remove, adjust, or reverse the blade therein.
The device of this disclosure may be made of thin sheet material or metal. It is a light weight hand tool, convenient for accurate and ready use as well as compact for storage. The simplicity and fewness of the parts adapts such for economic production. The narrow region for the blade and its effective holding are features for economy in the use of a small portion of the high grade cutting steel or alloy for the blade. The notched ends are quick means for accurate, positive locking against casual disturbance. The clearance regions are such that material accumulated may be washed clear thereof by way of the opening 16 at the comb device.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A safety razor tubular handle convex and converging on one side toward a diametrical extension terminus intersecting an axis and there forming a seat limit with said seat inclined therefrom toward the handle, said seat adapted to receive a blade having its back at said axis diameter limit and its edge approximate tangency to said handle as clearing the inclined seat, said tubular handle providing a guide, and a slide in said guide adapted to thrust toward the seat to hold the blade in the seat.
2. A safety razor comprising a tubular handle with a diametrical extension terminus forming a main seat adapted to receive a blade, a guide slide way toward said seat, a complementary seat slidable in the guide slide way, and a compression helical spring in the handle extending away from the terminus of the complementary seat remote from the blade for impelling the complementary seat to nest with the main seat and thereby adapted to clamp the blade in operative position therebetween.
3. A safety razor comprising a tubular handle with a diametrical extension terminus forming a main seat adapted to receive a blade, a guide slide way toward said seat, a complementary seat slidable in the guide slide Way, a compression helical spring in the handle extending away from the terminus of the complementary seat remote from the blade for impelling the complementary seat to nest with the main seat and thereby adapted to clamp the blade in operative position therebetween, and an abutment in the andle for the spring remote from the complementary seat.
4. A safety razor comprising a tubular handle with. a diametrical extension terminus forming a main seat adapted to receive a blade, a guide slide way toward said seat, a complementary seat slidable in the guide slide way, a compression helical spring in the handle extending away from the terminus of the complementary seat remote from the blade for impelling the complementary seat to nest with the main seat and thereby adapted to clamp the blade in operative position therebetween, a rack-carrying abutment in the handle for the spring remote from the complementary seat, and a pawl pivoted in the handle and adapted to engage the rack-carrying abutment, whereby the abutment may be adjusted as to the handle in determining clamp holding action for the blade.
5. A safety razor tubular handle convex and converging on one side toward a diametrical extension terminus intersecting an axis and there forming a seat limit with said seat inclined toward and rigid with the handle, a blade in said seat having its back at said axis diameter limit and its edge approximate tangency to said handle and clearing the inclined seat, said handle providing a guide slide way toward the seat, a complementary seat slidable in the guide slide way, a compression helical spring in the handle extending away from the terminus of the complementary seat remote from the blade for impelling the complementary seat to nest with the rigid seat and thereby adapted to clamp the blade in operative position therebetween, a rackcarrying abutment in the handle for the spring remote from the complementary seat, and a pawl pivoted in the handle and adapted to engage the rack-carrying abutment, whereby the abutment may be adjusted as to the handle in determining clamp holding action for the blade.
