My invention relates to scrapers.
It has among its objects to provide an improved scraper construction especiallyadapted to use in scraping floors or the like. A further object is to provide such an improved scraper having improved means for clamping and releasing the scraper blade in the body of the scraper, and, more particularly, such improved means located in an improved position wholly on the scraping end of the scraper. A still further object of my invention is to provide such improved means including an improved rotatable operating member conveniently operated by the user of the scraper and so disposed and associated with cooperating blade clamping means as to markedly reduce the cost of the construction and to be adapted to use with scrapers having handles of any desired length without increasing the cost thereof. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of a scraper constructed in accordance with my improvement;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the working end of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom plan view, the holder being broken away and other parts being shown in section, to facilitate illustration;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 3, and
Fig. 5 is an exploded view of the various parts.
In this illustrative construction, I have shown my invention applied to use in connection with a scraper having along handle I and an integral substantially flat body 2 carrying a scraper blade 3 along its front edge and an angularly disposed clamping portion 3 pressing the blade against the sloping front end 5 of the scraper body 3; this clamping portion l being connected to the body 2 and clamped against the same by improved means hereinafter described.
Herein, these means include an improved rearwardly directed portion on the clamping portion and receivable in a usual longitudinally directed horizontally disposed slot 6 in the front end of the body 2, and further include improved clamping connections between this rearwardly extending portion, generally indicated at 'l, and an improved rotatable clamping member 8. More particularly, this clamping member 8 is carried in a suitable transverse recess 9 centrally located in the body 2, and this member 8 projects through this recess: beyond the top and bottom of this body portion. This rotatable member 8, as herein, is also preferably knurled on its periphery, as shown at H]. Further, it will be observed that it is internally threaded, as at I l, and adapted to cooperate with corresponding threaded edge portions l2 on aflat central extension I3 on the rearwardly directed portion 8. It will further be noted that the threaded end of this portion it extends rearwardly beyond the remainder of the portion 1, and that cut-outs or openings M- are provided between the opposite sides of the base of this portion l3 and the spaced ou'ter parts of the portion 1. Moreover, it will be observed that a washer i5 is also disposed in the aperture 9 between the rotatable member 8 and the front wall it of the recess 9, and that the slot 6. extends back of the aperture 9 sufficicrrtly to permit the extremity of the portion 13 to move freely in this slot without engagement with the back wall ll thereof.
In the use of my improved construction, it will be evident that the rotatable member 8 may be readily adjusted by engagement of the operators fingers with either, or both, top or bottom exposed portions of member 8, to clamp or release the blade 3 between the. clamping portion 4 and the inclined front end portion 5. on the body 2; Thus, whenever it is desired to change the scraper blade 3, it is only necessary to release the member 8 by rotating the same in one direction sufiiciently to effect the necessary longitudinal movement of the extension l3 to release the clamping portion 4 and permit the blade 3 to be withdrawn; while a reverse rotation of the member 8 will obviously securely clamp the blade by effecting a reverse longitudinal movement of the extension It. In the use of the scraper, it will also be evident that; the member 8 is so disposed in the upper surface of the body 2 of the scraper as in no way to interfere with the normal use of the scraper, While providing in rear of the member 8 an ample area for engagement of the palm of the hand with the body of the scraper.
As a result of my improved construction, it is made possible, while utilizing a centrally located clamping connection, to maintain the scraper blade securely in position, while requiring only a single clamping means. Moreover, while utilizing such a single clamping connection, it is made possible to utilize improved controlling means adapted to be manipulated by the fingers Without requiring the use of any tools, and further to dispose these improved means in such an improved location that there are no irregularities in the surface of the body portion of the scraper pressed down upon by the operator which are apt to produce injury to the hands during continued use of the structure. Further, the structure required is exceedingly simple and inexpensive, all boring or cutting in rear of the slot being eliminated, while the longitudinally movable clamping member and the cooperating rotatable member are also inexpensively provided and adapted to be used Without change irrespective of variations in the length of the handle I. Attention is also directed to the fact that the central location of the threaded portion on the rearwardly extending-clamping member and its cooperation with the rotatable clamping member, is such as to insure alignment of the longitudinally adjustable clamping member and ready tightening-or release of the same Without objectionable weakening of the holder, and while producing a construction which is adapted to have long life in service. These and other advantages of my improved construction will, however, be clearly apparent to those skilled in. the art.
While I have herein specifically described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that the same has been shown for purposes of illustration, and that my invention may be modified and embodied in other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
