1 Claim.
This invention relates to furnace grates, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which is of sectional formation wherein each section is provided with unobstructed water passages extending thefull length thereof to give a maximum amount of cooling to eliminate burnt out grates and said passages opening outwardly through ends of the grate sections to permit easy cleaning of the passages and to receive bushings for aligning the ends of the sections when assembled and to provide supports for gaskets between the sections to prevent leaks.
Another object of this invention is the provision of novel turn-buckle type fasteners for tightly drawing the sections together and thereby compress the gaskets to assure against leaks between the connecting water passages and which will permit the sections to be easily and quickly connected and dis-connected when desired, the sections being so constructed that the end of one section will fit an end of any other section so that any number of sections may be utilized or assembled together in filling in fire boxes of furnaces of different sizes.
'With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description pro,- ceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of our invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view, partly in section, illustrating a grate section and its connection with water bypasses and further showing the fasteners for connecting the grate sections in place.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating one of the water bypasses.
Figure 3 is an end view of one of the grate sections.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the fasteners.
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating a split sleeve used in connecting water passages of different sections of the grate.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary plan view, partly in section, illustrating a modification of this invention.
Figure 7 is a detail sectional View taken on the line '!-1 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary plan view, partly in section, illustrating another modification of this invention.
Figure '9 is a sectional View taken on the line 99 of Figure 8.
Referring in detail to the drawings, .the numeral '5 indicates a grate section which includes aseries of diagonally arranged slots 6 to form a maximum number of draft passages through'the grate-section.
The grate section is further provided with a pair of unobstructed Water passages 1 extending from end to end thereof. The ends of the grate section are further provided with connected notches 8 and 9 to form seats for bolt type fasteners it] which go to make up a turn-buckle type fastener wherein the nut is indicated by the character H and the bolts by the character I 2. It is to be understood that one bolt has a left hand thread while the other bolt has a right hand thread and the nut II is threaded accordingly so that on rotation of the nut in one direction, the bolts 12 will be drawn together and on rotation of the nut II in a reverse direction will cause the bolts to move apart.
Associated with the ends of the grate are hollow members l3 acting as water bypasses and are provided with ports l4 to align with the Water passages 1 and extending into the ports and the water passages I are split sleeves l6 forming supports for gaskets l1 arranged between the ends of the grate and the members l3.
The members l3 have formed therein com-- municating notches l8 constructed similarly to the notches 8 and 9 to receive the bolts l2 and portions of the nut ll. With the grate section connected to the members l3 as specified and shown in the drawings, and by rotating the nut H in the proper direction, the gaskets i! will be tightly compressed for establishing leakproof connections between the members I3 and the grate section. The split sleeves besides supporting the gaskets l1 assist in aligning the water passages of the grate section with the ports l4 of the water bypass members I 3.
Referring to our modified form of invention as shown in Figures 6 and '7, the grate is indicated in entirety by the character 20 and is composed of sections A and B and each section has extending longitudinally thereof pairs of water passages 22. The water passages open outwardly through one end of the section B while the water passages open outwardly through both ends of the section A and are normally closed by removable plugs 23. The water passages of the section B connect with a bypass passage 24 forming an integral part of the section B.
The sections A and B are joined together by turnbuckle type fasteners 25 joined to the sections A and B as described in connection with the form of our invention shown in Figure 1. Also, the water passages where the sections A and B join receive therein split sleeves l6 forming supports for the gaskets IT.
The water passages 22 in the section A are connected together in pairs by cross passages 26 provided with ports 21 in which may be threaded inlet and outlet water pipes. Thus it will be seen that the circulation of the water may be had from end to end of the sections when assembled together as shown in Figure 6. The removable plugs 23 permit easy cleaning out of the water passages.
Referring to our modified form of the invention, as shown in Figures 8 and 9, the grate section is indicated in entirety by the character 28 and is similarly constructed to the grate section except that the air passages are formed by providing in opposite edges of the grate section a series of notches 29 and also by substantially serpentine shaped slots 30 formed midway between the notches 29 and extending longitudinally of the grate section.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that any number of grate sections can be assembled together for the purpose of filling fire boxes of different sizes and that each section will be efiiciently water-cooled throughout its entire length and each section providing for a maximum amount of draft passages therein.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:
In a grate construction, a plurality of grate sections each including air slots and water passages extending from end to end thereof, water bypass members having ports arranged at the ends of the grate sections, split sleeves extending into the ports and. water passages, gaskets supported by said sleeves and abutting the grate sections and the water bypass members, said water bypass members and grate sections having opposed. notches, turn-buckle type fasteners including headed bolts received in the notches whereby the grate sections and water bypass members may be tightly drawn together.
