SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'y No. 224,252, dated February 3, 1880.
' Application filed October 2, 1878. 4
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH B. WAKEFIELD, of Springfield, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Cooking Device; and I do .hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthe device into the stove, when desired, withf out removing the device lfromv its position on the stove in either case, all which will be more fully hereinafter described. Y
The drawing represents a central vertical section of my invention, showing Vthe grate dumped and the valve below the grate tilted and the draftopen.
In the drawing, H representsa shell, cylindricalin form, and provided with atop ring,
A", and at the bottom with a plate, B, having an opening, B', in which is suitably hung a valve, B", and a flue-opening, B, is also made to communicate with the l'lue behind the back-board L, which back-board extends across fromone side oi the shell t6 the other inside.
'i A represents the grate-ring, in ,which is suitably suspended a grate,D, which is so ar-- ranged that it may be shaken from `one side to the other when in a horizontal position, or it may be tilted into theposition shown in the drawing when desired. v
Suitable fire-brick maybe placed around the inside of the shell or body from one end of the back-board around to the other, and a small door, C, may be arranged to slide in ways or guides made in the grate-ring A and in the plate B; or this vdoor may be provided with pivots, so that itmay swing outward.
The valve B' may be held in place in a hori-v zontal position by any convenient means, and the grate'D may be prevented from tilting or dumping when in a horizontal position by a projection, c', on the inside of the draft-door C, which extends in beneath the edge of the grate when the door is shut, as shown in dotted lines, or by any other convenient means.
This device `is used by removing one of the lids or covers over the vtire-box of an ordinary stove and placing the device over the hole. The lid or cover removed from the stove may be placed on the top ring,.A, of the device,
and the grate and the valve beneath both being in a horizontal position, a tire is built on the grate, using for fuel either chips or coal, as
desired. The draft-door C being open, the products of combustion pass up over the backboard L and down the ue behind the backboard, through the due-opening, into the stove.
If the ashes should collect onI the valve B,
vthe latter is tilted and the ashes fall into the {ire-box of the stove below; and `if' the fire shouldgo out the whole contents of the fireboX ot' the device may be dumped into the rebox of the stove by tilting both the grate D and valve B" at once, so that it will not be necessary to remove the device from its position on the stove.
I am aware that furnaces intended to be I used upon a stove or range have heretofore been made with a liked grate, a firebox, a
'a cooking device to be used upon a stove or Yrange has ever heretofore been made having a tire-box, a diving or revertible iiue, a dumping and shakinggrate, and a valve opening beneathl the grate, so that the ashes and einders could be dumped out into the fire-box of the stove without removing the device from its position on the stove or range.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- A 4cookingdevice consisting of a tire-box and a revertible fluelocated behind said fireboX, combined with a dumping and shaking grate arranged in said lire-box, a valve arranged to open beneath said grate, and a iiueopening, B3, communicating with said revertible flue, said device f being arranged and adapted to be usedupon an ordinary stove or range, substantially as described. i i
RALPH B. 41W AKEFIELD.
