ILLIAM A. SPENCER, OF: LYNGHBURG, TENnEssEE.
'WASHlNG-MACl-HNE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,238, dated February 3, 1880.
l Application filed Nove nber 8,1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. SPENCER, of Lynchburg, in the county of Moore and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking Steam-Washers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction. and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification,
and to the letters and figures of reference in the following description, and particularly pointed outin the claim.
'In the drawings, A designates a casing,
which is divided by means of partitions into the three compartments A B B, the compartment A being closed by a hinged cover, 0, while the two remaining" compartments B B are left open, as shown.
The compartment A contains the rocking cage D, in which the clothes to be steamed are placed, and the compartments B are designed to contain water for the purpose of rinsing the clothes after they have been suitably steamed in the aforesaid cage. This cageis composed of a frame with .wires secured thereto, so as to form a cylinder with openings for the admission of steam, and a longitudinal opening, d, through which the -clothes may be passed into or taken out from the cage. It is also provided with end journals, which are journaled in the sides of the casing A, and is rocked during the steaming process by means of a crank-handle, E. This handle is adapted to fit upon one of the journals, so that it may be unshipped when desired, and its movement is limited by a stop, F, secured upon the casing so as to prevent an entire revolution of the cage. Within the compartment A are arranged the false sides Gr Grand a false bottom, H, space being left between these said parts and the inner walls of the casing for water and steam;
The false bottom is provided with downwardly-opening valves I I for the admission of water into the space below the same, and the false sides are provided with perforations K for the passage of steam to the main compartment A. The false sides and bottom are made removable from the casing, and are held in place during use by means of suitably-arranged cleats b and latches a.
' L designates a packing upon the sides and partition which surround the compartment A, so that when the cover is down any unnecessary escapeof steam will be prevented.
The compartments B B, in which the clothes cover 0, in order to hold the same down during the process of steaming.
0 represents a pipe leadingfrom the cover,
and to this pipe I propose attaching a hose,
so as to carry off steam and inject it into water either in the rinsing-compartments B B, or-into any adjacent vessel, whereby the temperature of the water within the same may be raised in a most economical way.
In operation, the casing is placed upon an ordinary stove or furnace, or, if desired, a furthis operation the cage should be rocked, so
as to agitate the clothes and thoroughly present them to the action of the steam.
When the water is partly exhausted below the false bottom, and the water from the condensation of the steam exerts a greater pressure upon the valves than exists below the same, they will open, so that the water will flow back into the said space where it is reheated and again converted into steam.
What I claim as new is- The casing A, with the steaming-compartment A, having a false bottom with downward opening valves and removable false sides with perforations for the passage of steam into the main compartment, spaces being left between the casing and said false sides and bottom for water and steam, and a rocking WILLIAM ALFRED SPENCER.
