Description

. UNITED PATENT QFEI E.
ALANs oN H. MERRIMARQQF wns r nn nnn, oonnnorrour.
PlTM AN.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,207, dated February 3, 1880.
" Application filed January 5, 1880.
' man adjustments in which an adjusting head or nut having a right-hand male screw at one end and a left-hand male screw at the other end forms the connection between the respective ends of the pitman. Said screws are re ceived in female-threaded sockets split longitudinally and provided with transverse screws for firmly bindlng the sockets upon the threaded ends of the adjusting head or nut, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of apitman adjustment which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on line as .r of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on line 2 y of Fig. 1.
A designates the upper end of the pitman, which is designed to be connected to the wristpin or eccentric of the main shaft, as in ordinary presses. B designates the lower end of said pitman, which is designed to be connected to the upper end of the ordinary gate or slide of the press in any ordinary manner. Each of the parts AB is split or divided longitudinally, and provided with a removable cap, 0, which is held in place by transverse cap-screws a at. These parts are so divided that the caps O O are upon one side of the axialline of the head or nut D, and the portion of the parts A B to which they are directly connected is upon the opposite side of said line. The confronting ends of the parts A B are bored out and provided with female threads, thereby forming a female threaded' socket in the parts A B. Said parts are adjusted to and from each other,
' and also connected" together, by means of an adjusting head or nut, D, having a male screw ateach end, the screw 1) having a right-hand thread, and the screw 0 having a left-hand thread. The respective sockets in the parts A B are correspondingly threaded.
The header nut D is provided with pin-holes the front vertical side of a frame.
for the insertion of arod or lever to turn it by but instead of pin-holes it may be made in angular form for the application of a wrench. The sockets are so fitted to the screws that when the cap-screws are tightened the caps will be firmly bound upon the screws, instead of resting hard against the companion portions of the parts A B.
When it is desired to adjust the length of the pitman the cap-screws to a are loosened and the adjusting-head and its screws turned until the desired adjustment of the pitman is effected. The cap-screws are then tightened to firmly bind the caps O 0 upon the respective ends of the screws b c and hold the parts rigidly together.
If desired, the parts A B might be simply slit up through the sockets, or for their whole length, and then provided with the same transverse cap-screws for binding the sockets upon the respective screws; but the removable caps are far preferable, and possess some advantages not attained by the mere splitting of the sockets.
Some of the leading advantages of my adjustment are, that it is the nearest approach to an absolutely solid connection of any known to me. The caps can be readily detached for removal of the head and screws 1) 0 whenever desired. The slide or gate may be easily disconnected from the shaft and upper part of the pitman for removal by merely removing the upper one of the caps O. The device is very compact, and the head D does not project beyond the flush back side of the pitman, (see Fig. 2,) so that the device may work upon The tight ening mechanism or cap-screws aa are upon the front side of the press, and accessible under all different adjustments.
I am aware that it is common to employ a right-hand and left-hand screw formed in one piece to adjust different parts to and from each other; also, that a pitman adj ustmentis shown in a prior patent in which externally and intemally adjusting sockets having longitudinal slits were bound upon right and left handed screws at the respective ends of the pitman by means of tapering and internally threaded sleeves, all'of which are hereby disclaimed.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In a pitman for a press, the head or D, having right and left male the upper and lower ends of the pitman A B, 10 nut the removable caps O G, and cap-screws a a, screws b o, in substantially as described, and for the purpose combination with the parts A B, having split specified. sockets correspondingly threaded, and the I ALANSON H MERRIMAN transverse adjusting-screws, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified. Witnesses:
2. The combination of the head or nut D, CHAS. H. SHAW, having right and left hand male screws 1) c, I S. H. SHAW.
