Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
EETUNE LjEAILEY, oE EEEEPOET, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlTMAN-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.157,670, dated December 15, 1874; application filed December 10, 1872.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FORTUNE L. BAILEY, of Freeport, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented a certain Improvement in Harvest Sickle-Head or Pitman Box, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in pitman-boxes; and consistsin an adjustable box or follower, which is secured to the head by two screws placed at right angles to each other, .one of which adjusts the box back and forth, while the other clamps it rigidly in position, so as to prevent the adj ustin g-screw from being injured orDbent, as will be more fully described hereafter.
rlhe accompanying drawing represents my invention.
A represents the sickle head or pitman, which may be formed with the sickle-bar, or may be made in a separate piece and secured to the bar by means of screws c, as :may be preferred. In this head is formed a socket or eye to receive the crank-pin, into which socket is placed the inner end of the compensating box or follower B. Passing horizontally through the shoulder formed upon the top of this box into the head is the set-screw E, by means of which the box can be moved back and forth to tighten or loosen it at will. Passing vertically, or nearly so, through a slot, c, in an extension formed upon the outer end of the box, and about at right angles to the regulating-screw E, is a second screw, E', by means of which the box is clamped rigidly to the head after it has been adjusted in position, so as to prevent the screw E from being injured by strains or the jerking motion of the crank. By loosening the screw E the slot allows the box to be moved in or out, after which it is again tightened in position. Upon the top ofthe head is formed a flange, c, which fits into the groove d, made in the under side of the box, so as to prevent the box from moving sidewise, whereby the screw E is kept from being bent -and made inoperative.
I am aware that a compensating-box for pitmen is not new, and do not claim. such. My invention consists in the manner 'of attaching the box to the head, and preventing injury to the regulating-screw.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A compensating journal-box consisting of Jche head A, box B, screws E E', slot a, flange c, and groove d, the parts being arranged and combined to operateas shown and described.
FORTUNE L. BAILEY.
Witnesses: I
W. B. COLE, WILLIAM SiLoox.
