ATTORNEY Patented May 13, 1941 HIN GED DOUBLE COMB Samuel Foster, Jr., Cranston, R. I., assignor to Fosgood Corporation, Leominster, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application June Z7, 1940, Serial No. 342,608
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a comb and more particularly to a folding comb for dressing hair.
One object of the invention is to provide a comb for arranging, smoothing and brushing hair comprising a pair of comb members having their backs hinged together, and adapted to be used in combination, as a double comb, or separately as individual combs.
Another object is to provide a hinged double comb with means for holding the two comb members together in their closed position with the two sets of teeth spaced slightly from each other laterally.
A further object is to provide a folding comb that may be opened substantially flat for ease in cleaning the teeth of the comb members and to permit of using each comb separately.
A still further object is to provide a comb of the folding type of simple and compact construction that may be conveniently carried in a handbag, purse, pocket, and the like.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention in which- Figure 1 is a conventionalized plan View of the comb, showing the pair of hinged comb members in their closed position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the two comb members opened flat; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on a slightly enlarged scale, taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
The comb, which is indicated generally by the reference character Il), comprises a pair of comb members II and I2. The comb member II has a back I3 and teeth I4 while the comb member I2 similarly has a back I5 and teeth I6. v The teeth of one of the comb members, as the member I2, are lpreferably finer and shorter than those of the other.
The opposed faces I1 of the backs I3 and I5 are at so as to contact each other and to provide a limiting stopt when the combs are turned or swung towards each other into closed position. On referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that one of the comb members, as for example the member II, has a shoulder I8 at the lower edge that serves to space the two sets of teeth slightly apart from each other. The upper edge I9 is concave to turn about the tubular upper edge portion 20 of the other back so that there will be no opening between the two backs in any position of the comb members.
The combs are hinged together in any suitable manner at their ends 2| and 22, or elsewhere along the upper edges of their backs to permit of turning one upon the other from the closed position of Figure 1 to the open position of Fig. 2, or vice versa.
In order to secure the two combs together temporarily in their closed position, the inner face of the back of one of the comb members is provided with one or more studs 23 that are intended to snap into sockets 24 formed in the inner face of the back of the companion comb member.
The two comb members may be used together so as simultaneously to effect' both a coarse and fine combing in one operation, or in the open position, each comb may be used separately, Furthermore, when the combs are opened they may be cleaned more easily than the teeth of a unitary double comb.
Various modifications in the `details of the comb construction herein illustrated and described may be made within the scope of the invention. as defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A hinged double comb comprising two comb members each having a back and a set of teeth, the two comb members being hinged together at their backs, the two backs having flat inner faces that contact each other in the closed position of the two comb members, the inner faces of the teeth of one of said comb members lying in substantially the same plane as the inner flat face of the back of said comb member, the inner faces of the teeth of the second comb member lying in a plane that is offset from that of the inner ilat face of the back of said second comb member.
2. A hinged double comb comprising two comb member each having a back and a set of teeth, the two comb members being hinged together at their backs, the two backs having flat inner faces that contact each other in the closed position of the two comb members, the back of one of said comb members having a rounded upper edge, the back of the other comb member having a concave upper edge that ts against the rounded upper edge of the rst comb member, the teeth of one of the comb members being spaced from those of the other comb member.
