Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES FULTON, oF'nEw YORK, N. Y.
MANUFACTURING PAPER-PULP FROM PINE-LEAVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,170, dated February 3, 1880.
. Application filed May 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES FULTON, of New York, in the county and State of New York, formerly of Toms River, Ocean county, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Process of Manufacturing Paper- Pulp from Pine-Leaves, of which the following is a pine-leaves into a steam-tight vessel, which,
at its lower part, communicates with asteamsupply pipe and at its upper part with a worm, similar to a still. I shut oft access to the worm, and then admit steam into the closed 7 vessel, so as to expose the fibers to the effect of the steam under-pressure, and also to its moisture and heat. The steam serves, by its heat and pressure, to soften the fibers and to expel all resinous, oily, spirituous, and other matter from their pores, and to vaporize such matter, but leaves the fibers intact. When the fibers are properly softened and liberated.
from their original contents the passage to the worm is opened, so that the vaporized substances ma y escape for purposes of distillation,
as set forth in another application filed by me at the same time with this, and to which I .made oath September 18, 1877. The fibers are now removed from the vessel or tank and worked into pulp in the manner inwhich vegetable fibers are usually worked into pulp for making paper, papier-mach, or the like.
The pulp may be bleached by means of suitable chemicals.
I do not here broadly claim. the treatment of pine-leaves with steam, as this is set forth in the other application filed by me, as hereinabove stated; but
I do claim- 1. The process of treating pine-leaves with steam under pressure, for converting leaves into fiber for the making of paper-pulp, substantially as specified.
2. The fiber produced from pine-leaves by ejecting resinous, oily, and spirituous substances therefrom, said fiber serving in the manufacture of paper-pulp, substantially as specified. p CHARLES FULTON. Witnesses:
