Patenied May 13, 1941 NETED STATES PATENT QFFICE CHAIR SEAT OR THE LIKE Application March 12, 1938, Serial No. 195,437
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to chair seats or the like and more particularly to upholstered chair seats or chair backs. The structure shown and described herein is in the nature of a modiication of the construction shown in my copending application for patent filed March 10, 1938, Serial No. 195,013.
The primary object of the instant invention is to provide a chair seat, chair back or the like having an upholstered covering detachably secured thereover in .a novel manner whereby worn coverings may be removed and new ones substituted from ytime to time.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an upholstered chair seat, a portion thereof being broken away but it will be understood however that a chair back or the like may be similarly covered with a detachably secured upholstered sheet;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the upholstered chair seat;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional View on line t-L'I of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view on lines 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a view showing the manner in which the meeting ends of the securing wire may be fastened together;
Figure 7 is a view thereof after the meeting ends of the securing wire have been fastened together;
Figure 8 is a view showing how the meeting ends of the securing wire may be separated in instances wherein it is desired to replace a worn upholstered covering with a new and fresh one;
Figure 9 is a, plan View of the securing wire; and
Figure 10 is a side elevational view thereof.
Referring then to these drawings wherein like parts of the structure shown are designated by the same numerals in the several views, a supporting member for a chair seat, chair back or the like, here shown as an open top box of stamped sheet metal having vertically disposed side and end walls IE), has a peripheral groove II along the upper length of each side and end wall (see Figure 5). The polygonal groove II here shown has a rounded rearward portion, rounded corner portions and straight side and forward portions as best shown in Figure 1.
A chair seat I2 of hair or the like whose top, sides, ends and a portion of its bottom are enclosed within a fabric covering I3, is supported upon a flexible element I4 of any suitable material such as stamped sheet metal whose borders rest upon the borders of the open top seat supporting box, all as best shown in Figure 5.
An upholstered covering I5 for the chair seat I2 has a wire I6 sewed within the borders thereof which wire is of the shape best shown in Figure 9 and generally conforms to the shape of the polygonal groove II lbut differs therefrom in that three of its lengths are inwardly sprung.
The upholstered covering I5 is detachably secured over the top, sides and ends of the seat I2 by means of the wire I6 which is first inserted and seated within the groove II and thereafter secured together at its meeting ends in any suitable manner such as is shown in Figures 6 and 7.
The upholstered covering I5 may be similarly removed when it is desired to replace it with a ynew covering by separating the meeting ends of the wire I6 as indicated in Figure 8. Since the wire I6 is sprung inwardly along three of its lengths, these inwardly sprung portions tensionally engage within the groove II to stretch the upholstered covering I5 over lthe chair seat I2 since it is impossible to completely straighten the inwardly bowed portions of the wire by securing it together at its meeting ends.
Thus it will be seen that a chair seat, chair back or the like of the character herein shown may be provided with an upholstered covering which may be readily detachably secured thereover and while but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain detalls of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as the same is defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A polygonal rim having a peripheral groove, and an upholstered covering secured across the rim and whose entire peripheral border is provided with a sewed-in ilexible wire conforming generally to the shape of the polygonal rim but differing therefrom in that at least one length thereof is normally inwardly sprung, said wire being first inserted within the groove and thereafter secured at its meeting ends for detachably seating it within the groove to stretch the covering over said rim.
2. A open top supporting box for a chair seat or the like whose upstanding peripheral wall is provided with a polygonal groove, a flexible member seated on the box over the open top thereof, a seat or the like supported on the flexible member, and an upholstered. covering for the being first inserted within the groove and thereseat Whose entire peripheral border is provided after secured at its meeting ends for detachably with a seWed-in flexible Wire conforming genseating it within the groove to stretch the covererally to the shape of the polygonal groove but ing over said rim. diiering therefrom in that at least one lengthof 5 HENRY P. NORDMARK.
the wire is normally inwardly sprung, said Wire
