To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JOTHAM P. CARPENTER, of Attleborough, county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following,l is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the acconb.

-This invention has reference to an improvement in separable buttons; `and it consists'in the peculiar arrangement of a fixed central pin secured to a disk and surrounded by an annular slotted ri m, in which a forkfis made to slide, operated by a push-pin and held by a spring', so that the shoe provided with a tubular Shank may he firmly held, as will be more fully set` forth hereinafter.

Referring1 to the drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of the improved button, a part of the shoe being` shown as cut away, so as to Show the device more clearly. Fig. 2 represen'ts the various parts as detached in perspective view. Fig. 3 is aview of the button, showing the device when the two parts are secured together. Fig. 4 is a view of the button, showing the device when the shoe is released.

In the drawings, A. represents the disk of the button, and B the shoe. l a is the disk to which the post b and theslott'ed annular rim c are secured, and which is secured to the button A by Solder. dd are the slots'in which the slide @moves and by which it is held.

The Slide e is stamped out of sheet metal, and has a central enlargement, f, into which the tubular post l, provided with the shoulder Y m, can freely enter, guided by the post b. g

is a contracted portion of the slide e, which,

when slid over the shoulder m, firmly secures e the tubular p ost and the shoeto the button. h h and t' t arestops, by which the movement of the slide e is controlled by the stop coming, in contact with the annular rim c.

The slide eis provided with a pusher, K, which extends through the rim of the button. The tubular post lis secured to the shoe B; and nis a spring, made of wire bent into a loop, as shown. The ends of the wire are bent at a right angle and enter the recess o in the slide e.

As the slide is firmly held in the slot d the shoe will be firmly secured when the contracttubular post l, and as this post is guided by the post b the button can be easily secured, and when secured is more rigid than are buttons as heretofore made.

This improved device is simple and durable, andthe stops on the slide limit the motion, so that the device cannot be strained or in- Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
