Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. BABROWS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
COVER A ND COOLER FOR BU'IZTER AND OTHER ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION fanning part of Letters Patent No. 224,126, dated February 3, 18 80.
' Application filed August 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BARROWS,
of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and,
*My invention relates to a device especially adapted for use on the table, the purpose of the same being to keep butter or other articlcs cool by ice without the ice coming into imme; diate contact with the butter or other article.
My invention consists, first, in a coverfor a dish or plate, or for butter or other article thereon, having areceptacle or chamber for ice, which ice-chamber is above the article covered, and has a removable lid; secondly, in such cover and ice-chamber so combined with a hollow base as by circulation 'of cold air to secure further cooling-surface.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cover and cooler crnbodying' my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section taken at right Fig. 2.
V A is the main body of the cover and cooler. Bis a receptacle, dish, or chamber for holding the ice, and has a removable lid, C. In this form of construction of my cover and cooler the main portion A has an opening at its side, which may be closed by the slide D. The opening in portion A is shown partially closed by the slide D in Fig; 1. The slide D is made like a cylinder, having a portion cut out corresponding to the opening in the portion A, likewise cylindrical, and is fitted to revolve or slide about the portion A, having a knob,a, for convenience in moving the same.
The above-described parts are set on abase, I
A tube or passage, F,
E, which is hollow. opens at the upper end, 11, into the ice-chamber B, and at the lower end, 0, into the hollow angles to section shown in base E. There are openings through the shell of the hollow base E at convenient place or places, as at f.
The operation of my device, constructed as of the ice. and the butter or other article will be kept cool as long as ice remains in the chamber B, also, a circulation of cold air will be maintained by air passing from outside into the chamber B, there being more or less opening about and under the rim of the lid C, and down the tube F into the hollow base E, and out through the openings f.
If the base E be removed, as it may be by loosening the fastenings g g, and the opening in the side of portion A closed, and in this form the cover and cooler be placed over butter or other article put on a suitable dish or plate, the purpose of my invention will be mainly served. i
' The cover and cooler may be made wholly of metal or other material--as, for instance, glass. So, also, the cylindrical part A may be made in various designs-thatis, need not be confined to thestraight form shown.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of theinclosing portion A, slide D, and ice-chamber B, substantially as hereinbefore described.
2. The combination of the inclosing portion A, ice'chamber B, slide D, and hollow base E, substantially as hereinbefore described.
3. The combination of the inclosing portion A, having the slide D, ice-chamber B, base E, and tube or passage F, substantially as and for the purpose hereiubefore set forth.
WILLIAM ELIOT BARROWS.
