RICHARD JACKSON,
.13., or DETROIT, MICHIGAN,'ASSIG1\TOR TO nnreorr REFRIG- ERATOR our? COMPANY, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN, Acozaroaerrou or MICHIGAN.
PORTABLE REFRTGERATOR.
To all whom it mdg concern: I
Be it known thatI, RICHARD JAoKsoN, Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Refrigerators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a portable refrigerator, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive refrigerator-y device in the form of a valise that can be. easily carried for preserving edibles and, other matter in warm weather or'in such places where perishable goods, flowers, etcl, are liable to become decomposed or faded.
A further object of this inventionis to provide a portable refrigerator embodying a novel outercase and lid and a novel inner case and cover therefor, the latter serving as a chamber for a refrigeratory agent.
is had to either whereby the refrigerator can invention resides in the novel construction,
combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- V Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the portable refrigerator, and Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same.
The device comprises a rectangularouter case 1 having a flat bottom 2 and hinged or otherwise connected to the upper edge of the rear wall of the case, as at 3, is a lid 1. The lid is substantially inverted section and the top thereof, intermediate the ends, has a conventional form of handle .or hand gripe. tained in a closed position by the ordinary and well known type of valise or trunk lock 6 and clasps (not shown). The outer case 1 and the lid 4 thereof are provided with a lining 7 preferably of a non-conductive material, as asbestos, tar paper or the like, and in constructing the outer case and lid, the same are made as air tight as possible.
Arranged within the case 1 is a removable inner case or receptacle having a hollow bottom and walls. The inner case is preferably Specification of Letters Patent.
. jecting flange and the disposed upon. the
The cases are compactly arranged and easy access case or receptacle.
V shape in cross 7 The lid is adapted to be re Patented Apr. 2?, 1915.
Application fi1ed April 27, 1914.. Serial No. 834,577.
made of galvanized sheet metal or non-corrodible material and comprises an outer shell 8 and a spaced inner shell 9, said shells having the upper edgesof the vertical walls thereof connected, as at 10. This connection is preferably made by providing the walls of the shell 8 with an inwardly prowalls of the shell 9 with an outwardly projecting flange that is soldered or otherwise connected to the flange of the shell 8, whereby the shells can be bodily removed as a case or receptacle. To facilitate this, the inner sides of the end walls of the inner case are provided with pivoted handles or hand grips 11 that normally lie fiat against the shell 9 of the inner case, as best shown in Fig. 1. The walls of theinner case are spaced from the lining or walls of the outer case by ribs 12 vertically walls of the inner case and transversely disposed upon the bottom thereof, these ribs providing an air space or ap between the outer andinner cases.
The flanged upper edges of the inner case, at the ends thereof, are provided with depending guide tubes 13 that extend into the chamber formed by the shells 8 and 9, and
said guide tubes receive drain spouts or drip tubes 14 carried by an inner lid or cover 15 that rests upon the upper The inner lid or cover is hollow and triangular in cross section with the base forming the bottom of the lid or cover. When the lid or cover is fitted upon the inner case or receptacle the inclined walls of the lid or cover are spaced from the inclined walls of the outer lid 4 and said inner lid or cover constitutes a chamber 16 for ice or a suitable refrigeratory agent. One of the inclined walls of the lid-or cover 15 has an opening provided with a screw threaded collar 17 employed for holding a detachable cap or closure 18 which can be easily screwed into the collar through the medium of a transverse rib or hand piece 19 carried by the cap. I
The inner case or receptacle provides a compartment 20 in which food or other matter can be placed and preserved by the refrigeratory agent within the chamber 16. It is preferable to use ice and collect the drippings therefrom in the chamber or hollow walls of the inner case or receptacle; the cold water keeping the walls of the shells edges of the inner 8 and 9 cool and the air within the compartinent of the inner, case or re'ceptaclefrom becoming warm. in e In order that the innerlid or cover can be easily removed from the inner ease or receprecepare vertical in order to provide clearance for the upper edges of the inner case or receptacle. This is best shown in Fig.2, wherein it will be observed that a gasket 21 is interposed between theupper edges of the outer case 1 and the loweredges of the outer lid 4, to insure an air tight connection between these two elements when the latter is closed. Since the inner case and the lid thereof can be removed from the outer case, it is possible to use the outer case for purposes other than that herein specified. This is also true in connection with the entire device, but its size, shape and convenience of carrying makes it particularly applicable to parcel post service.
While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it
is to be understood that the structural ele- I outer ments are susceptible to such variations and,
modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim. 7
What I claim is:
A portable refrigerator comprising an outer case, a hinged lid carried thereby and having inclined walls,
and having inclined walls adjacent tothe inclined walls of the lid of said outer case,a cap detachably supported by an inclined wall of the lid of said inner case, and drip tubes carried by said'hollowlid and extend ing into the drain chamber of said inner case.
an'inner case ar-' ranged within said outer case and spaced In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
