2 Claims. ((21.156-39) One of the objects of this invention is to provide an improved automatically operating window screening device which is readily attachable to the window sash and window frame, and is likewise easily and quickly detachable therefrom, to facilitate cleaning the window sash and sill and in storing away the device in the fall, without any necessity of operating screws or securing elements or requiring the use of any tools therefor.
A more particular object of this invention is to provide such a screening device which comprises a housing carrying a screen therein and provided with means whereby the exposed or outer end of the screen automatically becomes operatively connected to the adjacent bar of the window sash by the act of mounting this housing in proper position in the window frame, so that the screen will move along with the sash; and in which device the screen has its said outer end automatically engaged to and held upon the housing when the sash is closed, so that the housing with the screen therein can then be readily withdrawn from the window frame and sash when the latter is in its closed position.
These and various other objects and advantages are attained with this invention, as will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which it is shown in its preferred form; it being apparent that other arrangements and forms of construction may be resorted to for carrying out the objects and purposes of this invention.
This is a division of our prior application for views, taken on lines 22 and 3--3 of Fig. 1, re-
spectively.
Fig. 4 is a partial perspective view of the screening mechanism which comprises the casing containing therein the spring roller with the screen, and which is easily mountable in position between the side members to secure the entiredevice in place and is likewise easily removable therefrom.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the connection between the screen and the reinforcing 7 Strip, taken along line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of part of a screen guiding side member, adapted for readily mounting the screening mechanism thereon.
In the drawing we have illustrated our invention in its preferred form of construction, comprising a pair of screen guiding side members H and I2 which are detachably mounted on the pair of jambs or side members I3 of the window frame, and the screening mechanism M which includes a casing or housing l5 carrying therein a roller iii of the spring actuated type provided with a screen I! secured thereon, said casing and roller and screen being arranged to be movable together as a unit.
This screening mechanism [4 and the two 7 members II and I2 are adapted to bear on the lower member or sill 18 of the window frame, and the exposed or outer end of screen i! is releasably connected to the lower bar IQ of the window sash l9, so that this mechanism is readily mountable in its operative position between the pair of guide members H and I2 and is likewise readily removable therefrom.
The side members II and I2 are made similar and are preferably constructed each from a strip of sheet metal so as to have its several parts or elements integral, for economy in construction. The side member 12 comprises an attaching portion or bar 30 to be attached to the jamb l3, and includes spaced guide plates iii and 32 extending at an angle therefrom, for guiding a substantial marginal part of the screen in the ineluded channel therebetween. The front guide plate 32 is bent inward providing a lip 34 to engage upon housing l5, and an integral bracket plate 35 extends from the lower end part of member I2, adapted to engage the end of roller 16, while an inturned lower end provides a lip 36 to engage underneath the housing or casing l5, therebyholding the end of the housing between said lips 34 and 36 and the bracket plate 35'. Said plate has aslanting slot 31 therein to receive the flat end part 38 of the spring roller I6; and this housing with its roller and screen therein can thus be easily and quickly installed between the side members H and I2 by sliding end part 38 downward in slot 31, and thereby furthermore holding the two side members and this screening mechanism safely in position and preventing any accidental sliding away or withdrawal of the same.
The side members it and I2 have openings 4| therein for receiving pins or securing elements 42 which are secured to the jambs l3 and project inward therefrom, so that these side members can be readily mounted in position by pressing them onto said pins and against the jambs, and they can likewise be readily removed therefrom, as disclosed more fully in our above identified application. The screening mechanism is then readily mountable as a unit in position between said side members to hold them in place, and is likewise readily removable therefrom.
The casing or housing l5 has a pair of caps 45 closing its two ends, and being adjustably mounted thereon, by means of slots 46 and screws 41, whereby to compensate for slight variations in the widths of the frames. The caps have each-a suitable aperture 48, thru which project the fiat end part 38 and an end pin 39 on the opposite end of the roller. r
An attaching member or reinforcing strip 56 is secured to the exposed or outer end of the screen It is preferably in the form of a doubled strip of sheet metal including two portions 51 and 58 with the latter having its lower edge portion 58' turned inward and clamping thereby the bent edge part of the outer end of the screen. Securing elements 59 are preferably also used for positively pressing and holding the portion 51 against the screen and the bent portion 58, as best shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, to secure the screen positively to this strip.
The member 56 is provided with key-slots 6|, each having an enlarged lower portion 6| adapted to pass readily over the head 62' of a headed member 62 which is mounted on the sash bar l9, preferably by attaching or providing said member 62 on a handle 63 which is fastened on the sash bar, as indicated in the drawing. Said'member 56 is further provided with hooks 65 on its upper end which engage in openings 66 provided in the upper part of casing l5, as shown in Fig. 4.
By the use of this disclosed construction, the side members II and I2 can be readily set in place on the window jambs 13, and the screening mechanism I4 can then be readily placed in position between said members II and I2, to mount the entire device in proper position. The headed members 62 on the window sash and the slots 6| on the connecting member 56 are so placed that when the sash is closed the enlarged portions 6| of said slots will be in line with the heads 62 of members 62, so as to enable convenient withdrawal of the operating mechanism from the window sash and frame. Whenever the sash is raised said members 62 will engage in the narrow upper parts of slots 6| and will then carry along the attaching member 56 and unroll the screen; and when the sash is fully closed then said heads '62 will again be in line with the enlarged portions 6|. When the window is closed then the hooks 65 engage within openings 66, so as to bring said enlarged portions 6| in line with said heads 62; but as the sash is' raised and the members 62 lift the attaching member 56 and the screen, then the hooks 65 will also be lifted from said openings 66 and away from the casing I5; and these hooks will again enter the openings as the window sash is closed.
It is apparent from the above that with this invention the screening mechanism can be readily removed from the window sash and frame, and can likewise be readily replaced thereon, without the use of any tools and without removing or operating any screws or securing elements or marring the window sash or frame.
We claim: 1. A window screening device, adapted for a window frame and sash which are provided with 'headed elements on the sash and with bracket means on the frame, comprising a screening mechanism arranged to be readily mountable as a unit between the bracket means to hold the entire device in its operative position and to be readily removable therefrom, said mechanism comprising a casing containing therein a spring roller and screen, a double attaching strip clamped upon the outer end of the screen, securing elements to draw the doubled strip together on the screen end, said strip containing keyhole slots which automatically engage said headed elements on the sash by the act of setting the mechanism in position in the bracket means, so that the screen will move with the sash, and hook means on said attaching strip adapted to engage in openings provided on the casing, whereby to secure said screen end to thecasing when the sash is closed, but to release the casing when the sash is being operated.

A window-screening device, adapted for a window frame and sash provided with headed elements on the end bar of the sash and with brackets on the'frame, comprising a screening mechanism readily mounted as a unit between said brackets to hold the device in its operative position and comprising a casing containing therein a spring roller and screen, a doubled strip of metal having an upward and inward turned lower edge portion around which the outer end part of the screen is turned and clamped, said doubled strip having keyhole slots provided therein to engage upon said headed elements on the sash bar by the act of setting the mechanism in operative position in the brackets, so as to move the screen along with the sash, and hooks integral on said strip to engage in slots provided on the casing When the sash is closed, whereby to'hold the screen end onto the casing and to place the enlarged parts of the keyhole slots in line with the heads of said elements so as to be readily removable from said elements by the act of withdrawing the mechanism fro the window sash and frame.
