The object of this invention is to lprovide a height adjusting mechanism particularly adaptcontrol shoe,
Iig. 5 is a sid'e elevation partly in section of a modiiiediorm of the invention.
Referring now-to Figs. 1 to 3, I provide in the form of my invention shown therein, a suction chamber including a body portion Ill having at its forward extremity an agitator chamber Il, and
, tion relative to the body of the cleaner.- Uponl elbows l2 projecting upwardlyfrom the chamber and handle i4 which is rigidly secured thereto may together swing as a unit relative to the body of the cleaner. The motor M drives the agitator i5 by means of a belt I8 and drives the fans by means of belts I1. The motor is located in a depression in the top of the suction chamber casting and. is concealed beneath a motor cover it which also covers the elbows I2.
The cleaner is supported upon front wheels Il and 'rear wheels 25 the latter being Journalled upon a bracket 2| which is hinged at 22 to the auction chamber I II and is upwardly urged by a 2f. Upon the hinge shaft 22 is secured an operating lover 24 the upper end of which rides against the cam 25 having a plurality of steps `:lnwhiehthe 4lever 2l may engage.l The cam 25 is in the-form of-a ring having an inner Ueshapedilange comprislng elements 26 and 28aiournal1ing the neck portion 21 of one. side of the fan case Il as shown l in Eig. 3, and having the ange 26a in rotatable elalment with the flange 23h of the elbows I2. Bald neck therefore'serves to form the previously mentioned pivotal connection between the ian cueandelbows I2.

maintaining the pawl 2! normally out of engagement with the ratchet 28.
kBy engaging the .trigger 32 the pawl 2l may be moved into engagement with the ratchet 28 so as *to cause the cam ring 25 to move in unison with the fan case. The cam ring 25 may then be ad- Justed to any desired position causing-the wheel [bracket 2l to correspondingly be adjusted in posirelease of thetrigger 32, thepawl 29 will be automatically retracted, leaving the cam ring 25 in the position to which i-t was moved, the ring 25 being retained in adjusted position as a result of the high irictional engagement of the flange 2Gb by the flange 25a; the friction between 2l and 26 and 28a is considerably less than that between 28a and 2Gb, thereby retaining 25 in adjusted position.
The operatorv is continuously informed of any possible need for adjustment by a pair of signal lamps 33 and-34 respectively mounted on top of the cover I8. These lamps have separate circuits -C and C' controlled by a double .throw switch 25 embodying a carpet riding shoe 26 which is pivoted at 31 to the suction chamber 1I.
. The shoe It, in order to avoid vibrations caused by the uttering of the carpet under the beater impact is made fairly heavy so that it resists such vibration by its tuer-tlvv The signal '3l may be set to iiash on when the carpetis too low and the signal I4 set to operate when the carpet'is too high. These signals may be of'oontrasted colors. Upon seeing. one of the signals give warning of necessary adjustment of is used which will remain continually lighted as long as the cleaner is properly operated. In this case a singlethrow switch lll is employed. The electric connections may be connected with those of the motor M which drives the agitator l5. The cleaner shown in Fig. 5 may embody the type of construction having a fan case lla driven by a motor lla and a swivel Joint 32 between the inlets of the fan case ila and-the outlet of lthe suction chamber il, and wherein adjustment of nozzle height is accomplished by moving the han die Il c vertically. `A bag Il is hung on rods 4I attached. to the under side' of the handlev AIl. It is coupled to the outlet Lof-the fan' caseby means of a bag coupling ll."
