SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,072, dated February 3, 1880..

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BUE'roN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam -Valves; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad tothe accompanying drawings,which form part of this specication.
My invention relates to steam-valves, and especially to that class known as steam-actuated steam-valves 5 and it consists in the following construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view, in longitudinal vertical section, of a device constructed according to myinvention. Fig. 2 is a view, part in plan, part in section, of the same device. Fig. 3 is aview, partin end elevation, part in transverse vertical section, of said device. Fig. 4L is a detached view, showing a modified form of valve K; and Fig. 5 is an end viewof the device shown `in Fig. 4.
In the said drawings, A is a steam-cylinder;
B, its steam-chest; C, the piston ofthe cylinder A. D is a cylindrical valve operating within the steam-chest B. E E are steam-supply or feed ports leading from the ends of the cylinder A inwardly toward the middle portion of the steam-chestlB. F is an exhaust. g is a port leading from the steam-chest B to the valve K. g is another port, leading from the opposite end of the steam-chest B to the valve K. This valve K, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, consists of a tube or hollow cylinder havin g three openin gs-the openin g k, con- .structed and located at a suitable point to register with the port g, and the opening K', constructed and located at a suitable point to register with the port g', in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter appearing, and the opening 7c', constructed and located to register with the exhaust-port F. y
Referrin g,now, more particularly to the val ve D, Which is located Within the cavity of the steam-chest B, it will be observed to consist, essentially, of four disks fixed upon a common shaft or connection. The end disks, D D5, constitute, respectively, the heads or ends of this valve. Through each of the heads D D2 is made a small hole or vent, d, through which steam may1 freely escape at all times for the purpose of balancing the valve and providing a steam-cushion at each end thereof.
The two middle disks, D3 and D4, are located and constructed to regulate and control the passage ot' steam from the steam-chest B to the cylinder A through the ports. E, and also to regulate the exhaust of steam from the cylinder A.
K2 is an external stem or shaft att-ached to and operating the valve K. Motion is imparted to the valve K through the agency of the movements of a boss, K5, which is attached to therod ofthe piston C. This boss K5, impinging alternately against the stops K3 K4, imparts an intermitting longitudinally-reciprocating motion of the valve K.
The operation of my device is. as follows: In Fig. l the parts are shown in the position that they assume when the piston C `is at its extreme left-hand throw. In this position steam will be fed through the supply B, down through the steam-chest, between the disks D' D3 of the valve Dthrough the left-hand port, E, to the left face of the piston C, while the steam from the right-hand face of said piston will be discharged through the exhaust by way of the right-hand port E and the space in the steamchest between the disks D3 D4, and nally through the exhaust F. In this position of parts the port g and the port K of the cylindrical valve K have registered, so that steam has escaped through said port from the righthand side of the valve D, thus relieving the pressure suddenly from that end, the pressure of steam upon the opposite end having already moved the valve D to theposition shown in Fig. l, where it has stopped the port gin such a manner as to prevent the downward escape of steam through it into the valve K.. Steam now being received upon the left face of the piston C will drive it to the right until the boss K5, striking the stop K4, will move the shaft K2, with its valve K, to the right sufficiently to bring the port g and the port Tc of the valve K into register, at which time the steam will escape and be discharged from the left end of the valve D, which will cause it to moveto the left, causing the disk D3 to cut off steam IOC through the left-hand port E, and, after it has passed over it, to permit the steam from the left of the piston C to discharge through this left-hand port E and the space between the disks D3 D4 out through the exhaust F. Meanwhile steam will be admitted through the supply B', down between the disks D4 D2, through the right-hand port E, to the righthand face of the piston C, which will drive it again to the position shown in Fig. 1. The holes cl in the heads D D2 ofthe valve D should not be so large as to permit ot' a too free passage of steam, so that when the steam is'exhausted from either end the pressure else- Whereupon this Valve will cause it to move in the direction of the exhaust, either to the right or left, as the case may be.. ln practice I make these holes of about one-sixteenth inch diameter for a valve tWo inches in diameter.
The valve proper, DSD, instead ot' being of the specific description shown in the drawings, may be either of the well-known D form or any other suitable shape. Moreover, it may be made separate from the piston portion of the valve mechanism, it being only necessary that the said valve, if thus made separate, as just intimated, be so constructed and united with the piston mechanism as to properly move with it to open and close its ports.
Figs. 4 and 5 show a modified form ot valve to be used in lieu ofthe valve K, and in this modified construction steam passes through ports Z', formed in the disks secured to the valve-stem Z, and tlows around the latter to the main exhaustport.
What I claim is- The combination, with the main valve provided with the grooved or perforated pistons or disks D D? and intermediate pistons or disk D3 and D4', of the auxiliary valve provided with end ports and central steam-exit, and the main cylinder, with its steam-ports E E and exhaust-port F, substantially as set forth.
