Description
E. BUSSEYQ Stove and Furnace Grate.

ESEK BUSSEY, or TnoY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF on HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES A. McLEOD, or SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EsEK BUssEY, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove and Furnace Grates, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to a manner of constructin g and arranging a stove or furnace grate, and it consists in forming upon the periphery of the grate downwardly-projectin g feet, and upon the inside of the ash-chamber 0r deflecting dust-ring curved ways for the grate-feet and grate to rotate in when vibrated horizontally by means of a shaking-bar.
My invention also consists in a manner of combining with a stove or furnace grate that is arranged to vibrate horizontally in rotation by means of downwardly-projecting feet and curved ways for the latter, formed in the ashchamber wall or deflecting dust-ring, a movable center and attached shaker-bar that will draw out, so as to leave an opening in the center of the grate, through which refuse material or the contents of the fire-chamber may pass to the ash-pit, the object of myimprovement being to dispense with the central rotating pin and cross-bar by which the grate is usually operated, and to make a free opening in the latter, unimpeded by the former, when it is desired to discharge the contents of the tire chamber into the ash-pit.
In the accompan yin gdrawin gs there arethree figures, in all of which like reference-letters designate the same parts of the device.
Figure 1 shows, in perspective, a view of the grate in position, and also the manner of arranging the downwardly-projected periph eral feet upon the former, and the curved ways for the grate and feet to move in when rotated horizontally by means of the sh akin g-bar, with the guideways for the feet to move in formed upon the adjoining wall upon its inner side. This illustration also shows the slotted openin g formed in the wall to regulate the distance and measure of horizontal grate rotation. Fig. 2 shows a top view of the grate with the movable center drawn out and the supplemental bar attached to it also the bar attached to the grate-perimeter, as well as the downwardly'projected feet. This illustration also of Letters Patent No. 223,988, dated February 31, 1880. Application filed August 4, 187l.
shows grooves or supporting-flanges formed on the grate to receive and support the movable center. Fig. 3 exhibits a top view of the movable grate-center separated from the grate.
The several parts which cooperate to produce myinvention as constructed and arranged are designated as follows: The grate is shown at G, its downwardly-projecting feet atF FF, the curved guideways for the latter to move in when the grate is rotated at W WV W \V, the supporting-bar attached to the rim of the grate at B ,and the projecting shaking-bar attached to the movable center 0 is shown at B.
At 0, Fig. 2, is designated the central openingproduoedwhen the movable center is drawn frontward.
The letter D shows the position of the slot formed in the wall to regulate the horizontal vibration of the grate and shaking-bar.
S S denote flanges, formed at the sides of the opening 0 in the grate, which produce the grooves g g g g, in which the sliding centerpiece 0 is arranged to move when drawn out or pushed in.
M M denote the wall of the ashpit or de flectin g dust-ring, as sometimes called, it being the part in which the guiding-ways W W W are formed for the grate and grate-feet to rotate in.
I am well aware that a grate having a movable center arranged to draw out, and constructed to vibrate in rotation by means of parallel ways formed in a supplemental grateframe and ring, has been used before and patented.
I am also aware that a grate having a center-piece constructed to draw out, with the grate arranged to vibrate in rotation upon metallic balls working in a groove formed in a supplemental grate, has also beenpatented.
The leading feature of my invention being the manner of arranging the grate to shake in rotation horizontally by means of downwardlyprojecting feet formed upon the grate and guidingways in the adjoining wall or ash-pit 5 wall, the movable center may be dispensed with, and the grate have in other respects the ordinary form, and still the other parts will perform their same oflice;
Having thus described my invention, what structed to rotate and vibrate horizontally by MW means of downwardly-proj ected feet and curved Ways upon the adjoining wall, a removable center that can be drawn out or moved in 15 through grooves formed in the grate, and so as to open and close an opening in the grate, in the manner and forthe purposes shown and described.
Signed at Troy, New York, this 28th day of 20 June, 1879.
ESEK BUSSEY.
