Description

April 8, 1941. w. J. M KINNEY STOP MOTION FOR TEXTILE MACHINES I N V E N TO R WMamJMc/Yiknqy Afro/ME Y Filed July 2, 1940 Patented Apr. 8, 1941 STOP MOTION FOR TEXTILE MACHINES William J. McKinney, Stonington, Conn., assignmto The Atwood Machine Company, Stonington, Coma, a corporation of Connecticut Application July 2, 1940, Serial No. 343,598
3 Claim.
This invention relates to textile machines, and particularly to doubling and twisting machines for rayon, silk and other fibres. More particularly the invention relates tot. stop motion to promptlystop operation of individual units'of the machine when a strand breaks before orafter reaching the feeding mechanism, or when broken strands become wrapped around the feeding mechanism.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved stop motion particularly adaptat any twisting unit, that unit is promptlyrendered inoperative.
With the above and other objects in view the invention includes the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
ed for a doubling and twisting machine for textile fibres that may be mounted upon the housing for the feeding mechanism and which will be simple in construction and which will act promptly to stop the twisting operation if one In the accompanying drawing annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification, I have shown the invention embodied in a standard form of doubling and twisting machine but it will be understood that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope or more strands break or become wrapped around the ifeeding mechanism, which generally is in.
the form of a wheel or a pair of wheels.
Another object of the invention is to mount a stop motion lever, having yarn guiding eyes thereon, pivotally upon an arm which may swing about the axis of rotation of the feed mechanism,
and which is normally retained in its normal or operative position by means of a light spring.
In doubling and twisting machines for textile fibres, it is usual and standard practice to provide individual drop vwires each held in place by one of the strands beingetwisted. In the event one of the str nds breeitsqts grop wire falls and a weighted p rtionofther'dropflwir is interposed in the path "of motion of an oscillating or rotating member. A latch is released by this oscillating or rotating member which disengages the feed mechanism and thus stops the twisting operation at that .unit. In addition to the possibility of a single strand breaking before it reaches the feed mechanism, the combined strand between the feeding mechanism and the twisting unit may break. To stop the feeding mechanism when this strand breaksadditional sto'p mechaor the combined twisted strand breaks, or if the strands become wrapped about the feed wheels of the invention, the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a. side elevation of the feeding mechanisrnfor a doubling and twisting machine, the stop mechanism forming the present invention being shown therewith.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section and showing the feed wheels and stop motion actuator associated therewith; and
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the planes of broken line 33 in Fig. 1.
In the above mentioned drawing, there has been shown but one embodiment of the invention which is now deemed preferable but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims,
without departing from the spirit of the invenarm attached at one end to said lever and extending to the drop wire operated latch mechanism to disengage the feeding mechanism from its driving means and stop operation at that unit. Referring more in detail to the figures of the drawing there is shown at ill a housing within which are mounted feed wheels il rotatably mounted on a central stud I2. The stud I2 is mounted for rotation within the housing ill and is retained against removal therefrom by means of a washer and wire ring. To rotate the feed wheels ll one of them is attached directly to a manner. Should the combined twisted strand 3 gear H. The second feed wheel intermeshes with below the housing l0 bre t e e 34 would the first wheel upon an axis slightly oblique and tilt in a direction to move its weighted rear end eccentric thereto, so that both wheels are forced down and pull rod 28 down so that the projection to rotate simultaneously and their peripheries 5 30 at its upper end would similarly oscillate have a slight axial and eccentric movement.
