4 Claims.

This invention relates to quickly detachable leggings, more particularly intended for use in foundries and the like, to protect workmen from flying sparks and particles of molten metal, and has for an object new and improved leggings of this character.

In the drawing accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application, I have shown, for purposes of illustration, embodiments. which my invention may assume, and in the drawing:

As shown in the drawing, the body portion of the legging is indicated generally by the reference character l0, and comprises a single piece of material, such as leather, cut out at its lower central portion, as indicated at H. Fitted into the cut-out I l is an instep portion it, which projects forwardly, and is adapted to cover the instep of the user, being secured in position in the cut-out by stitching I3.

By forming the eyelets or loops 2% in the manner described double thickness of the wire or rod sections is avoided. Pocket means 23 are provided at the opposite lower underlying end 29 of the legging for accommodating the projecting part 3B] of the stiffening means iii, these pocket means comprising a strip of material secured in position by spaced sets of rivets arranged to define a pair of spaced pockets or loops 3i, either one of which will snugly accommodate the projecting part 30 of the stiffening means Iii, when the legging has been wrapped around the leg of the wearer.

The upper portion of the overlapping end M of the legging has fastened thereto, preferably by stitching 32, an elongated piece of material, preferably leather, which projects laterally outwardly beyond the edge of the overlapping end It, to form a projecting flexible tab or flap .33, and preferably secured somewhat inwardly of the outer end of the tab 33 are hook-like fastening means M, preferably including a piece of resilient rod or wire, bent in the form of a hook, including a body portion 35, an intermediate portion iii, and an inclined end portion iii, the wire as thus bent including spaced leg sections 33 and 39, the free ends of which are curled, to provide eyelets til through which extend the shanks of rivets ii, the rivets extending entirely through the tab 33 and headed on their outer ends, as will be understood. The leg sections 33 and 39 are also provided with substantially circular loops or eyelets 4-2, similar to the loops or eyelets iii-25 already described, and each of these loops 42 accommodates the shank of a rivet 33, these rivets extending entirely through the tab and upset, or headed, at the outside. The leg section 38 is bent, as at M, to provide a recess, the entrance to which is somewhat restricted, for a purpose which will presently appear.

The opposite, or underlying end 29, of the legging, adjacent the upper portion thereof, and at a level to dispose the upper edge substantially in line with the lower edge of the strip or tab 33, has another strip of material 45 secured thereto, preferably secured by rivets 46, the upper rivets being spaced apart predetermined distances to provide a plurality of keepers 41 with which the hook-like fastening means 34 may be selectively engaged.

In Figure 5, stiffening means 48 are provided, which are generally similar to the stiffening means [6 already described. In this construction, however, instead of loops 2525 being employed to anchor the stiffening means, the wire is bent in a complete circle to form closed eyelets 49, through which extend the shanks of securing rivets 50 in the manner already explained. The projecting means 5! of the stifiening means 48, is formed at its end with an enlarged or flared section 52, which when engaged in one of the pockets 3| tends to prevent accidental detach- ''ment of the projecting means 5| from the pocket.

In use, the legging thus provided, is readily attachable-detachable, and when applied, is wrapped around the leg of the user to dispose both ends of the legging at the outside, with the end [4 overlying the end 29, and the projecting part 30 (or 5|) of the stiffening means It (or 48) engaged with one or the other of the pockets 3|, as desired, while the flap 33 is manipulated so as to engage the hook-like fastening means 34 with one or the other of the keepers 41, and thus a quick snug fit of the legging is obtained, the recessed part 44 receiving the related keeper 4'! in such a way that the hook-like fastening means 34 is assured against accidental detachment, remaining attached even though the user kneels, or accidentally strikes the lower end of the legging against some obstruction, normally tending to force the stiffening means in an upward direction, such upward movement because of the peculiar configuration of the hook-like fastening means causing the same to move somewhat in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 4, and thereby tending to more securely fasten, rather than to disconnect the same. The legging, however, may be readily removed, merely by grasping the flap or tab 33, and pulling the same upwardly, thereby imparting a somewhat counter-clockwise movement to the hook-like mechanism 44, causing the same to be cammed from engagement with its related keeper 41, and this same movement retracts the projecting part 33 (or 5|) from the pocket 3| in which it was placed, thus disconnecting the entire fastening means. The formation of the stiffening means IE (or 48) and the hook-like fastening means 34, from some what resilient rod or wire, not only renders the entire legging more flexible and comfortable to the wearer, but reduces the area of the parts which normally become overheated, and greatly reduces the weight of the legging as compared to those of ordinary or usual construction.

It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that I have accomplished at least the principal object of my invention, and it also will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the embodiments herein described may be variously changed and modified, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and that the invention is capable of uses and has advantages not herein specifically described, especially in connection with various kinds of clothing, and the like; hence it will be appreciated that the herein disclosed embodiments are illustrative only,

and that my invention is not limited thereto.

I claim:

1. A legging of the overlapping type having stiffening means secured along one end, and comprising an elongated rod reversely bent to form spaced sections, the free ends of which are formed with eyelets for the reception of securing rivets, and the opposite ends of which are joined to form a bight portion; and means carried by the opposite end of said legging with which said bight portion is adapted to be engaged.

2. A legging of the overlapping type having stiffening means secured along one end of said legging, and comprising an elongated rod bent to shape and having a projecting portion, said rod intermediate its ends having bent portions forming eyelets for the reception of securing means; and means carried by the opposite end of said legging with which said projecting portion is adapted to be engaged.

3. A legging of the overlapping type having stiffening means secured along one end of said legging, and comprising an elongated rod bent to shape and having a projecting portion, said rod intermediate its ends having an offset substatially closed formed loop for the reception of securing means; and means carried by the opposite end of said legging with which said projecting portion is adapted to be engaged.

4. A legging of the overlapping type, comprising: keeper means secured to the upper part of the underlying portion, and hook-like fastening means carried by the upper part of the overlying portion, said hook-like means including rod means having spaced sections bent into hook-like form and adapted to be detachably engaged with said keeper means; stiffening means extending along the overlying portion of said legging and including elongated rod means bent to shape and having a projecting portion; and pocket means upon said underlying portion for the reception of said projecting means.
