SANITARY TOILET SEAT RAISER Filed Dec. 21, 1939 INVENTOR W/[Z/A'M (055N679 cite ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 1, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to sanitary toilet seat raiser.
An object of this invention is to provide a toilet seat and raiser therefor which will permit the seat to be lifted or lowered without directly contacting the seat by hand, thus avoiding the unsanitary contact between the hand and the toilet seat.
A further object of this invention is to provide a toilet raiser consisting of a handle rotatably mounted on a toilet seat so that the position of the handle may be changed to positions handy to reach, when the toilet seat either up or down.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a toilet seat raiser of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, sanitary in use, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of a toilet seat and handle provided with a seat raiser embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the toilet seat in lowered position;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; and.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view similar to Fig. 1, showing the toilet seat in raised position.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, l designates a toilet bowl to which there is hinged as at II a toilet seat I2 of usual construction and provided with a sanitary toilet seat raiser l3 embodying the invention. The toilet seat raiser 13 comprises a bracket I4 attached to the underside of the seat l2 and projecting therefrom. The bracket l4 may be made from a tubular member slit longitudinally at one end with the slit portions flattened into contact as shown at IS. The flat portions [5 are formed with registering openings 16 to receive screws ll which screw the bracket I4 to the underside of the toilet seat. Extending from the flattened portions I5 is a tubular portion l8 formed with external screw threads T9. The bracket I4 is preferably located at one side of the toilet seat I2 and is disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the toilet seat and somewhat forwardly to the midsection of the seat. Screwed to the threaded portion IQ of the bracket I4 is a packing gland 20. Rotatably mounted within the tubular portion l8 of the bracket 14, is a handle 23. The handle 23 has a head 24 within the tubular portion I8 and a. portion 25 passing through the central opening 26 in the packing gland. Extending from portion 25 at right angles thereto is an arm 21 to which there is attached a hand engaging portion 28 extending at right angles to the arm 21.
It will now be understood that the handle 23 is rotatably mounted on a bracket which will retain its vposition by the friction of the packing gland and the friction of the head 24 with the tubular portion Hi.
When the toilet seat is lowered as shown in Fig. 1, the handle 23 is preferably raised upwardly and forwardly as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, so that the hand grip 28 may be in a convenient position. When the seat is raised as shown in Fig. 4, the handle 23 may be swung forwardly to the position shown in said figure whereby the hand grip 28 is again in convenient position.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A handle for a toilet seat comprising a bracket for attaching the handle to the seat, said bracket having a fiat portion adapted to be secured to the underside of the seat, a tubular portion formed with external screw threads projecting from said flat portion, an apertured packing gland screwed on said screw threaded portion, a handle member having an enlarged head with the latter rotatably mounted within said tubular portion, a handle portion extending from said head through the aperture in said gland, said handle portion terminating in a hand grip.
