An object of my invention is to devise an improved form of the type of side frame shown in my co-pending applications Serial Nos- 196,035 and 196,036, both filed in the United States Patent Oiilce on March 15, 1938, and the latter of which has matured as U. S. Letters Patent No. 2,188,641, granted January 30, 1940. My said novel form of side frame as previously described is devised to afford a particularly high rail clearance while at the same time meeting the present standard test requirements in an eminently satisfactory manner. As shown herein and in said co-pending applications, my said novel form of side frame .is designed for association with a. connecting bolster l and one or more bolster insert castings designed to facilitate connection of the bolster end with the side frame and the associated spring group. 'Ihe forms of said insert castings are shown in detail in the aforesaid co-pending applications.
Another object of my invention is to devise such a. form of side frame as that above described wherein the web of the tension member will be at the top side of said memberV and will be formed substantially as a continuation of the top chord of the spring seat portion thereof, the flanges of said tension member extending downwardly and being connected by spaced struts as hereafter described in detail.
My novel structure as herein described contemplates the above-mentioned novel arrangenient in combination with the novel column structure described in my said co-pending application Serial No. 196,035 together with other features disclosed and described in the associated drawings and the description thereof together with the appended claims.
Figure i is a side elevation of my novel side frame structure, only onehalf of the frame being shown inasmuch as opposite ends of the frame are similar in form.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the side frame structure shown in Figure l, and Figure 3 is a t top plan view thereof.
Figure 4 is a sectional view in a plane bisecting the structure shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 taken substantially in thetransverse vertical plan indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view taken in horizontal plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken in the vertis cal y plane substantially as indicated by the line l 6-6 of Figure 1; the section being taken through the juncture of the column with the tension member.

Describing the structure in greater detail, the side frame comprises the compression member 2 and the tension member 4 merging adjacent their I5 ends as at 6 with the integrally formed journal box structure 8. Columns I0, l0 are integrally formed with the compression and tension member and dene therewith the bolster opening l2, said bolster opening having uniform width at the top and bottom as indicated at I4, I4 and the somewhat restricted width therebetween due to .the formation thereon of the centrally located guide surface I6 with the vertical ilange I8, said surface having concave cylindrical form as best seen in the top plan view of Figure 3, said view also showing the tapered character of the vertical guide flange I B notched at the top as indicated at 20 for a purpose more fully explained in my said co-pending application Serial No. 196,035.
The compression member 2 is formed with the web 22 at its top side anddownwardly projecting lateral flanges, said lateral flanges being joined by the integrally formed spaced ties indicated at 24 and 26 over the window opening 21 and hav- 35 ing at the transverse center line of the frame the tie member 29 (Figure 4) which merges withv the reflanged edges of said lateral flanges along the portions of said anges above the window opening l2 as best seen at 3 I, 3| (Figure 3). The ten- 40 sion member 4 is likewise inverted U-shape in cross section having the web 28 (Figure 7 and the side flanges 30 and 32 reilanged as indicated at til, 3i, said reilanged portions being beaded at their outer edges as indicated at it, it, said beads extending from the juncture oi the tension member with the journal box d throughout the length oi the diagonal portion thereof and merging at their inner ends as at 30 (Figure 2) The danges of the tension member are joined by the spaced ties indicated at l0 and all?, the tie i0 merging with the reilanged portions 3i along relatively large radii as indicated at M, M. The tie t2 likewise merges with said reilanged portions at its inner edge along the radii indicated at 46, 46 and 55 its outer edge is prolonged as indicated at 5i-i, to merge with the edges of said reiianged portions 3d, 2li over an extensive area.
The central horizontal portion of the tension member is of box section having the top web d, the bottom web 52 and the central longitudinal flange 6G as well as side walls 5E) and 58 of reduced height to form a shallow box section. The
top chord EEB is widened to fo a spring seat Se, said spring seat being defined at its opposite' edges by the opstanding anges d2 and @d beaded along their upper edges as indicated at G6 and (5d. The juncture of the upstanding anges with the horizontal spring seat is reinforced by the ribs 1I, 10.
Adjacent the juncture of the upper end of the column I0 with (the compression member 2 is formed the usual brake hanger bracket 12 on the inboard face of the side frame. 'I'he column is or general U shape in cross section as best seen at 14 (Figure 5) and the web thereof is substantially vertical throughout its length, said web ex- .tending from the top of the window opening I2 to the top chord 50 of the spring seat and merging therewith. As previously indicated, the window opening defined by the columns has equal width at the top and at Ithe bottom with the centrally located concave cylindrical bolster guide surfaces I6 interrupted at the middle by the vertical guide flange i8.` It may be noted that the bolster guide surface i8 is widened laterally as compared with the remainder of the column, thus affording somewhat greater Jbearing surface for bolster engagement. Below the guide surface i6 the web of the column is cored out as indicated at 18 (Figure 4), reducing the weight of the casting in an area which would otherwise have an excess of metal. At the upper end of the column there is cored out also the transverse slot 18 to facilitate the casting operation and prevent the formation of cracks.
At its lower end the column is flared to a greater width as best seen at 8l, n (Figure 4) to merge as at 82, 82 (Figure 5) with the inturned end portions of the upstanding flanges B2 and il, the structure being continued in a smooth shallow curve devoid of any sharp turns or angles.
In Figures 4 and 5 is shown a convenient method of arrangement of spring positioning means to be accommodated upon the spring seat 6G, said positioning means comprising the spaced triangular studs 8i, 86, the central dowel as well as lateral positioning means Il, l. and guide pads I2, 92 integrally -formed with the upstanding flanges at the sides of the spring seat. These figures also show a convenient method of affording drainage for the spring seat pocket in the form of the drain holes 96, I at the ends of the .pocket and drain holes Si, 96 at the sides thereof. It will be understood that the arrangement of spring positioning means and likewise the drainage openings may be modified to suit the convenience of the spring group to be meerporated in the Itruck structure. As shown, the positioning dowels will accommodate a great variety of standard spring groups and friction absorbing devices of well known form.
At the base of the column and adjacent the middle web thereof may be cored out the drainage openings Il, I4, said openings also facultating the casting operation by reducing the amount of metal at the juncture of the column with the top chord of the spring seat portion. The character of the structure in this arrangement is best shown by the vertical sectional view of Figure 6 taken just outwardly of the web of the column and extending through the before-mentioned drainage openings 3Q. 85. At this point it will be seen that the upstanding flanges 62 and 66 have been drawn inwardly to merge with the flaring bottom portions 80, 80 of the column and likewise the side walls 58 and 5E of the' shallow box section have been drawn closer together to form a substantial continuation with the aring portions 8U-, d0 of the column and the flanges i2 and 663.
It will thus be seen that I have formed a very compact and unined structure at the juncture of the column with the tension member affording maximum simplicity with great strength. The shallow box section with :the upstanding flanges form a section (Figure 4) of great strength which at the same time permits the formation of a side frame of relatively shallow depth, thus affording maximum rail clearance and a large area for the spring group.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiment of the device shown which is merely by way of illustration and not limitation as various and other forms of the device will, of course, be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of Ithe claims.
I claim:
i. In a truss side frame for a railway car truck,
. a compression member of inverted U-sectlon, a
tension member of inverted U-section, integral columns joining said members and forming therewith spaced window openings and an intervening bolster opening, said tension member having beneath said bolster opening a. horizontal portion of box section with a top chord thereof widened and formed with opstanding flanges defining a spring seat portion, said top chord being continuous with the web of said U-section tension member outwardly of said columns, said upstanding flanges converging adjacent their ends toward said columns and merging with said web at the bases of said columns, each of said columns having a U-section with the side walls thereof flaring adjacent their lower ends to merge with said converging flanges, each of said columns having a. vertical web extending from said compression member to said tension member and interrupted centrally thereof by a bolster guide portion, said guide portion comprising an arcuate wall interrupted centrally thereof by a vertical guide flange, all of said guide portion being spaced from the top of said bolster opening to afford entrance of an associated bolster end thereabove.
2. In a truss side frame for a railway car truck, a compression member of inverted U-section, a tension member of inverted U-section, integral columns joining said members and forming therewith spaced window openings and an intervening bolster opening, said tension member having beneath said bolster opening a horizontal portion of box section with the top chord thereof widened and formed with upstanding flanges defining a spring seat portion, said top chord extending beneath said columns and into diagonal portions of said tension member to merge therewith between said columns and the end of said frame, said upstanding flanges converging adjacent their ends toward said columns, each of said columns having a U-section with the side Walls thereof flaring adjacent their lower ends to merge with said converging anges, each of said columns having a vertical web extending from said compression member .to said tension member and interrupted centrally thereof by a bolster guide portion. said bolster guide portion comprising a concave wall interrupted centrally thereof by a vertical guide flange, all of said guide portion being spaced from the top of said bolster opening to afford entrance of an associated bolster end thereabove, said upstanding ilanges merging with the web of said tension member along the bases of said columns inboard and outboard of said frame.
3. In a truss side frame for a railway car truck, a compression member of inverted U-section, a tension member having a horizontal spring seat portion and diagonal end portions, said diagonal end portions having transverse webs and depending ilanges with inwardly projecting ledges at their edges, integral columns joining said members and forming therewith spaced window openings and an intervening bolster opening, said horizontal spring seat portion comprlsing a box section with the top chord thereof widened and formed with upstanding flanges defining a spring seat portion, said top chord extending beneath said columns and into diagonal portions of said tension member to merge therewith between said columns and the end of said frame. said upstanding flanges converging adjacent their ends toward said columns. each of said columns having a U-section with the side Wall-s thereof flaring adjacent their lower ends to merge with said converging flanges, each of said columns having a vertical web extending from said compression member to said tension member and interrupted centrally thereof by a bolster guide portion, said guide portion comprising an arcuate wall interrupted centrally thereof by a vertical guide flange, all of said guide portion being spaced from the top of said bolster opening to afford entrance of an associated bolster end thereabove, said converging flanges merging with said transverse webs along the inboard and outboard edges of the bases of said columns.
4. In a truss side frame for a railway car truck, a compression member of inverted U-section, a tension member having a horizontal spring seat portion and diagonal end portions, said diagonal end portions having transverse webs and depending fianges with inwardly projecting ledges at their edges, integral columns joining said members and forming therewith spaced window openings and an intervening bolster opening, said horizontal spring seat portion comprising a box section with the top chord thereof widened and formed with upstanding flanges defining a. spring seat portion, said top chord extending beneath said columns and into diagonal portions of said tension member to merge therewith between said columns and the end of said frame. said upstanding flanges converging adjacent their ends toward said columns. each of said columns having a U-section with the side walls thereof flaring adjacent their lower ends to merge with said converging flanges, each of said columns having a vertical web extending from said compression member to said tension member and interrupted centrally thereof by a bolster guide portion, said bolster guide portion comprising a concave wall interrupted centrally thereof by a vertical guide flange, all of -said guide portion being spaced from the top of said bolster opening to afford entrance of an associated bolster end thereabove, the converging portions of said flanges merging with said transverse webs along the bases of said columns inboard and outboard of said frame.
