FARM-GATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,456, dated January 13, 1880.

v To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, SAMUEL SHREFFLER, Jr., of Morris, in Grundy county, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Farm-Grates, the construction and operation of which I will proceed to explaimreference being bad to the annexed drawings, in which-- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of a socket for receiving a post.

The nature of my irwention consists in an improvement of the swivel upon which the gate rolls and swings, by means of which the outer end of the gate may be elevated to carry it over snow-drifts, and for the purpose of ad mitting the passage under it of small animals when desired without opening the gate.

This invention is an improvement of the gate patented heretofore to this applicant August 13, 1878.

In the drawin gs, A represents the gate proper, which rolls back and forth on the grooved rollers n.

The spider .90 supports the swivel carrying the rollers n, which swivel is in two portions, a and i, hinged together at 0.

The rod 0 is used to hold the outer end of the part a of theswivel from dropping down, and to adjust its outer end up or down, as may be desired, so as to preserve the level of the gate should the posts Bsag, which may be done by turning the nut r.

Fig. 1 shows the gate on a level. Fig. 2

shows how the joint 0 permits the outer end of the gate to be elevated to permit small stock to pass under it or to raise it over snow-drifts or obstructions, which could not be accom-. plished without the hinge 0 in the swivel.

The whole swivel rests on the spider m, which is bolted to and unites the two posts B B in a diagonal direction from each other, so that the gate may slide back between them and turn half-way around.

The whole gate and its posts rest on a plank, L, at the bottom, which plank or bed has crossbars attached crosswise to its under side, and project so the earth will rest on them to hold the whole firm in the earth. By this arrangement, should the outer end of the gate sag it can be leveled up by means of the joint 0 and nut r, as set forth, and in case of necessity be lifted over any obstruction. 1

The lower ends of the posts B are provided with hollow metal feet or sockets 2, into which they are driven securely and the feet 2 bolted firmly to the bed L, makinga very firm fastening at the bottom and thoroughly preventing any sag to the posts.

By this arrangement no post-holes need be dug, and should the gate sag at all at the outer end it can be leveled up by means of the joint 0 and out 1", as set forth, and in case of necessity be lifted over any obstruction.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:

The jointed swivel a 1?, bearing the rollers n, and provided with the bolt 0 and nut 1", for the purpose of operating and elevating and lowering the outer end of the gate A, in the manner and for the. purpose set forth.
