3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in loom reeds.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a loom reed constructed entirely of metal, the outer side bars of which are notched for allowing the circulation of solder to all points of contact to the dents, coil spring and side bars to prevent corrosion and rust with the resultant breaking or weakening of the dent wires.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a loom reed which will not be subjected to high temperatures during manufacture which has been found to be disadvantageous in that it causes weakening of the dent wires by distempering.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description of the accompanying drawing wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the loom reed embodying this invention;

Figure 3 is a top plan view;
Figure 4 is an enlarged side elevational view showing the manner of securing the dentsV in spaced relation;
Figure 5 is an enlarged end elevational view showing the manner in which the dents are anchored in place between side supporting strips; and
Figure 6 is an exploded perspective view of the dent wires construction, showing the manner in which the same are positioned between the notched side rails.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustrating the invention and wherein like reference characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the reference 40 character I0 will generally be employed to designate a loom reed constructed in accordance with this invention.
The reed I0 comprises a series of parallel spaced dents II adapted to receive supporting bars I3 having curved outer surfaces I4 and flattened inner surfaces I5. In construction, the reed dents II are inserted between the side bars I3 and are held in spaced relation by the convolutions of a wire IB wound around the curved surfaces I4 of the spacing bars I3 as clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5. In this manner the dents II are held in equi-distant relation and the free ends of the spacing bars I3 are secured to end frame members I'I and I8.
After the end portions of the dents I I which extend beyond the side frame bars I3 have been anchored together by a suitable molten metal such as solder or the like, side framebars I9 are placed on opposite sides thereof and extend from the outer edge of each frame member I'l and I8 5 to cover the exposed end portions of the dents.
Each of the side frame bars I8 is notched along one edge as at 20 so that the pointed portions of the notches asat 2| engage or are presented to the side spacing bars I3 adjacent the convolutions of the spacing coil I6. In this manner, air and oil may escape from notches or side bars I9 to allow free iiowing of solder to find its Way into the crevices of the coil IB and side bars I9 to prevent acid pockets which cause corrosion and rust thereof causing dent breakage.
It will be understood that the form of the invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size of notches on bars I9 may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A loom reed, comprising a series of dents, a rectangular frame for holding the dents in position, means adjacent the ends of the dents for holding them in spaced relation and side rails for confining the exposed ends of the dents having edges engaged with the dent spacing means with said engaged edges having notches for allowing the circulation of air, oil and solder to prevent corrosion along the points of contact of the dents with the rectangular frame.
2. A loom reed, comprising -a series of dents, side bars extending transversely of the dents adjacent the ends thereof, a spacing coil wound around the side bars and extending between the dents and side frame rails having corresponding edges substantially juxtaposed to said coil with said juxtaposed edges crenelated to allow the circulation of air, oil and solder to prevent corrosion along the points of contact of the dents with the frame of the reed.
3. A loom reed, comprising a series of dents, side bars extending transversely of the reed dents, a spacing coil surrounding the side bars having the convolutions passing between the reed dents and side rail frame bars secured to opposite sides of the reed confining the exposed ends of the dents and substantially contacting the coil, the contacting edges having notches for allowing the circulation of air, oil and solder to prevent corrosion of the dents.
