LOOM REED Filed April 28, 1937 v INVENTOR Huso Escmvum ATTORNEY erence will be had to the-following description and Patented Feb. 8, 1938 LooM REE I Hugo Schmidt, New Bedford; Mass.
Application An t 1937, SerialNo. 139,396 2' zoni (01. 139-4921 This invention 'relates'to new and useful-improvements in a loom reed and method for form- "ingthesame More specifically, the invention proposes the f5 construction of I a loom reedhaving dentssupported in a manner to reduce the flexing ends o fthe dents by spreading the flexing areas to act as a cushion and reduce crystallization to materially reduce the fatigue andbreakage of the '10 dents.
More specifically, the invention provides for a helical spring to be positioned around several pairs of strips and to have wire dents extended itherebetwen andapplying binding material upon the outer springs to form a rigid unit and spread erate .more efiiciently than those which are in common use.
Still further the invention provides for the addition of back members to'be engaged over some of the helical springs to act asa support when the V loom reed is positioned in the weaving machine.
7 Still further the invention provides for a means foradjustably supporting the strips on which "the inner free springs are mounted for shiftingthe flexing areas of the dents.
: '35' Still further the invention provides that the inner strips be so' constructed that they will engage into recesses in thesides'of the end bars and that'the recesses are to be of such width as .to accommodate the end strips and dove-tailed elements which are shiftable to either side of the end strips to move the free spring along the length i of the dents to shift the flexing area of the dents. For furthercomprehension of the invention,
and .of the objects and advantages thereof, refaccompanying drawing, and to the appended .claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
iIn theaccompanying drawing forming a mate the wire dents l5 reducing the flexing ends of Fig 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. r
Fig. 4 is a' view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a modified form of' the invention. I
Fig. 5'is an enlarged sectional view'taken on 5 the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is-an end view as though looking in the direction of the line 66 of Fig. 4.
The'loom reed,- according to this invention, comprises a pair of spaced end bars l0 having a 10 plurality of pairs of strips II on-opposite faces of the end bars I0 and fixedly positioned at the ends of these bars. A helical spring [2 is positioned around each'pair of strips H, and Wire dents l5' extend parallel to the end bars 10 and 15 have their ends engaged between the coils of the springs l2. Binding material I3 is applied to the outer springs for forming a rigid unit of the the dents by spreading the flexing areas, and act 5 as a cushion to reduce crystallization at the fixed point of the wire dents. This binding material l3 may also be applied in a manner to permit half the width of the adjacent springs to be free of the binding material to materially increase the flexing area.
The strips II are fixedly attached to the end bars ID by means of solder or other fastening substance, and the helical springs l2 are constructed of soft or tempered steel and of varying diameters so as to determine the space between the wire dents l5.
The binding material I3 is solder or similar material which will easily flow into all the cracks and crevices between the helical springs l2, the
wire dents l5 and the strips II. This binding material is applied while it is in a soft or heated condition by dipping the portion to which it is to be applied and then permitting it to cool to form a single unit of these members at the area which was dipped.
Backing members of any desired material may be applied to cover the helical springs 12 which have been made a unit by the binding material [3 for supporting the entire device in the weaving loom. For the purpose of illustration, the back member, as shown in Fig. 1 comprises a tube l6 having a split l6 along one side which will accommodate the thickness of the end bars l and the wire dents l5. As specifically shown in Fig. 2 the edges of the split l 6 engage between the innermost and middle springs l2 and abut against the faces of the end bars l0 and the wire dents IS. The tubes I6 may be made to engage over all of the springs on either or both sides of the loom reed, or any number of them.
According to the modification shown in Figs. 4-6 the innermost strip II engages arecess H] formed in the two faces of the end bars ID. The innermost spring I2 which is engaged around these strips H is free of any binding material and the purpose of this construction is to permit the strips II to be fixed along the width of the recess w to which the position of the spring H with relation to the wire dent 15 to reduce the flexing area of these dents.
Dove-tailed holding pieces l1 are positioned within the recess H3 and engage against the faces of the strip H to fixedly hold this strip in position within the recess I0 to prevent the strips from shifting while the spring I I is vibrating with the dents l5. These dove-tailed holding pieces I! may be withdrawn from the recess Ii) permitting the strip II to be shifted either up or down (see Fig. 6) to change the position of each spring l2. When the desired adjusted position has been reached new dove-tailed holding pieces of different widths may be again positioned within the recess Ill to hold the strips II in their new fixed position. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form and similar parts may be identified by the corresponding reference numerals.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming Within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. A loom reed comprising spaced end bars, a plurality of pairs of strips on the opposite faces of said end bars and fixedly positioned at the ends of said bars, a helical spring positioned around each pair of said strips, wire dents extended parallel to said end bars and having their ends engaging between the coils of said spring, and binding material engaged on the outer spring and half of the next adjoining spring for forming a rigid unit of said loom reed, said inner springs being free from binding material, and half the width of said adjacent spring being free from said binding material.
2. Aloom reed comprising spaced end bars, a plurality of pairs of strips on the opposite faces of said end bars and fixedly positioned at the ends of said bars, a helical spring positioned around each pair of said strips, wire dents extended parallel to said end bars and having their ends engaging between the coils of said spring, and binding material engaged on the outer springs for forming a rigid unit of said loom reed, means for adjustably supporting said pairs of strips which support the inner free springs for shifting the flexing areas in said dents, comprising dovetailed holding pieces engaging recessesin said side bars and engaging against said pairs of strips for fixedly holding said strips in position in said recesses.
