ADJUSTABLE DRAWING BOARD Filed May ll, 1959 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 j il v//f Home ys Patented Mar. 11, 1941 'i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to drawing boards and has for its primary object to provide an adjustable support for the rear edge of the board whereby to support the board in a desired inclined position for conveniently working thereon.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable support of this character which includes upper and lower frames hingedly io connected at the front end and provided with a step by step adjusting structure at the rear end of the board and in which the upper frame is provided with attaching plates for attaching to the edge portion of the drawing board to secure i5 the same in position on the frame so that neither the upper or lower surfaces of the drawing board are marred by the attaching elements in order that the working surface of the board may be reversed, when desired.
A further important object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable leg member for the rear of the board adapted to secure the rear edge thereof in a vertically adjusted position and also embodying fastening means for securing the board in its lowermost position and in which the supporting legs constitute a handle for conveniently carrying the board.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevational view showing the adjustable member at the rear of the board arranged in its uppermost position.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view showing the adjusting member in its lowermost position.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the frame with the board removed therefrom.
Figure 5 is a sectional view through the base portion of the frame, taken substantially on a line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevational View showing the board in an intermediate adjusted position.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary top plan view of the rear edge of the board showing the notches for accommodating the paper clips to prevent interference by the T-square, and
Figure 8 is a fragmentary sectional View taken substantially on a line 8--8 of Figure 7.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 5 wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a bottom frame member of substantially U-shaped form and inn cluding a pair of side members 6 connected at 10 their rear ends by a cross member 'l and the frontends of the members 6 are hingedly connected at 8 to a pair of top frame members 9-9 arranged in overlying parallel relation with respect to the bottom side frame members 6. 15
To the rear end of the top frame members 9 is hingedly connected a leg member IIJ, the
hinges being designated at II. 'Ihe leg member I0 is of substantially U-shaped form with its bight portion connected to the frame mem- 20 bers 9 so that the leg portions I2 swing downwardly in a suspended position.
Secured to the upper surface of the cross member I adjacent each end thereof is a plurality of stepped blocks I3 upon the upper edges 25 of which .the bottom edge of the respective leg members I2 are adapted to rest to adjust the rear edge of the frame in a vertically adjusted position.
Also secured to the cross member I are a 30 pair of upstanding headed members I4 adapted for engagement by a pair of spring catch members I5 carried by the leg portions I2 to releasably secure the legs in their lowermost position.
Secured to the front and rear ends of the upper 35 frame members 9 are angular plates I6 including an upstanding edge I'I adapted to engage the respective front and rear edges of a drawing board I 8 for securing the board in position thereto by screws or the like I9. 4o
The upper edge of each of the upper frame members 9 are provided with notches 20 to provide la space between the members 9 and the drawing board I8 to accommodate a T-square to be carried by the drawing board, when not 45 in use.
The rear edges of the drawing board are also provided with aplurality of notches 2l for accommodating the bight portion of U-shaped spring clips 22 adapted to secure the drawing 50 paper on the upper surface of the drawing board without necessitating the employment of thumb` tacks.
As more clearly illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings, the upper edge of the tallest block I3 55 is inclined inwardly to prevent accidental slipping of the leg members l2 therefrom.
When the leg member is secured in its lowermost position, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, the intermediate portion of the leg member constitutes a convenient hand grip by means of which the drawing board may be carried from place to place.
By reason of the fact that the drawing board is secured in position to the upper rframe at the edge portion of the ,board neither vthe upper or lower surface of the board is marredby the 'attaching screws or nails, and accordingly, should l frame member and an upper frame member hingedly'c'onnected at their front edges, a U- the upper surface of the board become marred through usage the boar-d may be 'reversed sov asv to provide afresh unmarred working surface.`
It is believed the details of constructions, ad-
vantages and manner of use of theidevice will be r readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation. f
I-Iaving thus described the invention, whatI claimis- ,o c V 1. In an adjustable drawing-board, a lower frame member` and Aan, upper frame member each of said frame members .including aypair of spaced parallel Vside `members, hingedlyk connectber for supporting the free end portions ofsaid ed at their front ends a., U-shaped supporting leg pivotally attached at its bight portions` at the rear ends of the upper frame member, means carried at the rear end offsaid lower frame memf leg member in `a vertically adjusted position., and means for securing Asaid supporting leg to the lower .frame member in a Apositionsubstantially at right angles thereto `for utilizing the bight porvtion of said supporting leg as a hand grip `for hingedlyg'connected at their front edges, a U- shaped supporting memberv pivotally attached at its bight portion to the rear edge of, the upper frame member the'leg portions of said member extending freely downwardly, and means carried at the rear end of said lower frame member for engagement by the ends of the legs for supporting said upper frame member in a vertically adjusted position, and means for releasably securing the lower ends ofthe legs to the lower frame member, the bight portion of the supporting member being spaced from the upper frame member and constituting a hand grip for carrying the board when the ends vof the legs are in secured position.
3. 'In an adjustable drawing board, a lower shaped supporting member pivotally attached at its bight portion to the rear edge of the upper frame memben'the leg portions of said member extendingfreely downwardly, stepped blocks rising from the rear end of said lower frame member for selective engagement by the ends of the legs for ysupporting said upper frame member in a vertically adjusted position and means for releasably securing the lower ends of the legs to the lower frame member, the bight portion of the supporting member being spaced from theV upper frame member and constituting a handgrip for carrying the board-when the ends of the legs are in securedpositiom v y 4. A drawing board of theclass described com.- prising a base, a board part, means for, hinging the board 4part to one end of -the base, a stepped member atthe other end of the base, a second member hingedly connectedv to the adjacent end ofthe aboard,4 and having its ylower end adapted to engage different steps for holding the lboard at differentinclination and latch means forl de tachably connecting the second hinged member to the adjacentend of the base for holding the board part in lowered position with the second hinged member* engaging the. lowermost step.
