COOKING-STOVE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,420, dated January 6, 1880.

Application filed October 23, 1879.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE WELLHoUsE, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to stoves; and it con sists in a construction of that part technically called the center, (whether it be the long .center or the short center,) whereby its heat exposed surface may be readily removed and renewed as may be necessary.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the upper face of my device. Fig. 2 is an inverted view-t'. 6., a view of the nether surface of my device. Fig. 3 is a sctional view of the same; and Fig. 4. is a view showing my device dissected.

A is the top plate of an ordinary cookingstove. B B are the short centers, and G is the long center. The lower face of these centers being at all times, during the use of the stove, directly exposed to the fire, there exists the necessity of some protection to these parts, for, if unprotected, destruction will follow before the balance of the stove-structure has become materially worn.

I will proceed now to specifically describe my invention as applied to a long center, although, as already declared, I may adapt it to either long or short centers.

0 is the long center. It may, if found desirable, be perforated with the ventilatingopenings 0, although in many cases these ventilating-openings may be omitted. It is the customary practice to retain the long center in its position by screws or rivets; but in my invention here I have devised a method whereby the necessity for screw or rivet attachment is obviated, and the long center 0 is detachably attached in such a manner as to permitof its ready placement or removal. It is prevented from downward displacement by its lateral flanges or shoulders O resting upon the top plate of the stove; and it is held from upward displacement at one end by the tongue which laps beneath the top plate, and at the other end by a swinging latch or button, D, which, when turned out, acts in the same manner as the tongue 0 in preventing upward displacement of the centerO.

E E is a fire-proof lining composed of any suitable material; and this lining may be constructed in one, two, or more parts or sections. I prefer forming the lower face of the center 0 and the abutting face of the fire-lining E E so that they may be united by any suitable slip-joint arrangement E Thus constructed, as above specified, the center 0, by the unlocking of the latch or button D, may be removed, and the lining removed for any required renewal or repair. If the ventilatingapertures O are provided, the center G will not be so severely exposed to the action of heat; and by making thefire-proof lining readily removable, so that it can be easily renewed, a long or a short center may be made to last as long as any other part of the stovestructure.

F F are lugs or stops attached to or formed upon the lower surface of the stoves top plate, and these are to prevent longitudinal displacement of the fire-lining E E.

It will be observed that the slip-joint connection between the fire-lining E E and the center 0 is effectually coveredand hid and protected by the fire-linin g itself.

I am aware that heretofore the center has been attached to a stove by different means for the purpose of readily connecting and disconnecting the same; hence I make no broad claim for mechanism adapted to accomplish this result.

What I claim is- 1. In a stove, the combination, with a center and an independent fire-lining fitted to its under side, of a lockin g device adapted to permit said lining to be readily connected to or disconnected from said center, as may be desired, substantially as set forth.

2. In a stove, the combination, with a center, of an independent fire-lining fitted to its under side, the two being detachably united by .a slip-joint connection, substantially as set forth.

3. In a stove, the combination, with a center having its under side provided with depending transverse lugs, respectively, at both I the flangesor shoulders 0 the button or latch ends, of an independent tire-lining fitted lengthwise between said lugs, and a locking device which permits the lining to be readilycoir nected to and disconnected from the center, substantially as set forth. I

4. lhe center 0, provided at one end with the retaining-tongue O and at the other end with the locking latch or button D, whereby said center is prevented from upward displacement, substantially as shown.

5. In a stove, the center 0, constructed with- D and the tongue 0 whereby said center is prevented from either upward or downward 1-5 displacement, substantially as shown.
