a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. STEVENS, CF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PHILIP GERST, OF SAME PLACE.
SlDEWALK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,053, dated June 22, 1897.
Application filed December 1, 1896. Serial No, 614,147. (No model.)
- To @U whom, it may concern:
Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sidewalk- Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sidewalk-covers, its object being to provide supplemental ventilation-covers or guards which are automatically slid into position over the opening when the sidewalk-covers are lifted and swungback.
To that end my invention consists of the combinatiomwith a hinged sidewalk-cover, of a supplemental horizontally-adjustable ventilation-cover or guard and means connecting it with the sidewalk-cover whereby it is automatically slid horizontally into position over the opening when the sidewalk-cover is lifted and swung back.
My invention further consists in providing the supplemental horizontally-adjustable ventilation-cover or guard with automatic means whereby it is slid horizontally back from the opening when the sidewalk-cover is swung into closed position.
I will now minutely describe the manner in which I have carried out my invention and then claim what I believe to be novel.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved sidewalk-cover, showing one of the covers lifted and swung back and its supplemental ventilation-cover or guard in position. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of Fig. 1, taken in the line 00 :0.
Referring to. the drawings, 1 is the iron frame, which is secured in an opening in the sidewalk and flush with the same.
2 and 3 are the covers proper, hinged to the frame and covering the opening through which merchandise, &c., is passed. In the drawings openings 4: and 5 are left in the frame 1 on opposite sides of the covers 2 and 3 simply to show interior construction and arrangement, as in practice the frame 1 is provided only with the opening which is closed or exposed by the covers 2 and 3. The supplemental ventilation-covers or guards are in the form of open gratings 6 and 7, which are mounted on friction-rollers 8, two on each side, which travel back and forth upon tracks 9 upon the longitudinal sides of the frame 1. The covers 2 and 3 are provided upon their corners with outwardly-projecting pins 10, to which are secured one end of the chains 11, which pass down through openings 12 in the frame 1 and around pulleys or friction-rollers 13, their opposite ends being secured to the gratings 6 and 7. In this manner the cover 2 is connected with the grating 6 and the cover 3 with grating 7.
The outer sides of the gratings 6 and 7 have secured thereto the chains 14, which pass over pulleys or friction-rollers 15, their lower end being provided with counterweights 16. Instead of these chains and counterweights springs or other mechanical equivalents may be substituted, if preferred.
In operation, when thecovers 2 and 3 are in closed position, the normal positions of the gratings are illustrated by the position of the grating 6. When one of the covers-3, for example-is lifted and swung back, as shown in the drawings, the grating 7 is automatically slid forward over the opening in a horizontal direction by means of the attached chains 11 and serves as a guard and means of ventilation as well. If the cover 2 is also opened, the grating 6 will automatically assume a horizontal position, similar to the grating 7, and when one or both of the covers 2 and 3 are closed the counterweights 16 automatically return the gratings 6 and 7 to their normal horizontal positions. In this manner the openings in the sidewalk are protected in an eificient and reliable manner.
It is necessary, of course, to have the chains 11 detachable, so that if the openings are used for other purposes than that of ventilation the gratings will be kept in their normal positions by the eounterweights by simply detaching the chains at either of their ends.
I claim- 1. The combination with a hinged sidewalk-cover of a supplemental horizontallyadjustable 'entilation-eover or guard and means connecting it with the sidewalk-cover whereby it is automatically slid horizontally into position over the opening when the sidewalk-cover is lifted and swung back.
2. The combination with a hinged sidewalk-cover of a supplemental horizontallyadjustable Ventilation-cover or guard and detachable means connecting it with the sidewalk-cover whereby it is automatically slid horizontally into position over the opening when the sidewalk-cover is lifted and swung back.
