Description

F 25, 1941.. I. A. CHM-KIN 2232171 GARMENT HANGER Filed March 22', 1, 939
4- 3 INVENTOR SIDORE ALHAIMN.
WARN 5f.
ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 25, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT HANGER Isidore A. Chaikin, Lawrence, N. Y. Application March 22, 1939, Serial No. 263,323 4 Claims. (01. 223-94.)
My invention relates to a garment hanger and particularly to the center hinged type and has among its purposes and objects to provide;
An improved hinge for garment hangers.
A garment hanger which will not distort the shoulders of garments hung on it.
A simple and effi'cient latching device for hinged garment hanger.
A hanger which may be quickly removed from or inserted into garments having small neck openings without unfastening the garment around said opening.
I accomplish these and other objects by the construction herein described and shown in the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation showing my hanger.
Figs. 2 and 3 are fragmentary details of the hinge and latch.
Fig. 4 is a section at 4-4 Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the application of my device.
Fig. 6 is a sectional modification of a square hanger.
Fig. 7 is a section on the center line of the end of the hanger.
Fig. 8 is a section at 8-8 Fig. 7.
Figs. 9, 10, 11 and 12 are details of modifications of the latch and hinge.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of drawing and in the specification to follow.
Garment hangers and particularly those used by the garment trade in storing and transporting dresses, blouses, etc., are ordinarily of the plain wooden type with a hook and when inserting the hanger into the garment the neck opening must be enlarged by unf-astening the garment which is done each time the hanger is inserted or removed.
The frequent and hasty unfastening of new garments causes damage and untidy appearance.
By the use of my device the hanger may be rapidly inserted and removed without unfastening the parts around the neck. The hangers in use may be exchanged or rebuilt with my improvements.
Referring to the drawing the member I is provided with the hook 2 and near said hook I have provided the hinge 3 secured to or formed integral with the ferrule 4 secured to the number I' at its end 5 near the center of the hanger 6. The hinge 3 is also secured to or formed integral with the ferrule 'I secured to the end 8 of the member 9 thereby hingeably securing the memgarment.
bars I and .9 to each other near the hook or center.
When the two members are secured by the latch II] the hanger serves to support the garment I I in the usual manner and when the latch 5 I0 is released the twomembers may be swung toward each other or together on said hinge making the removal or insertion of the hanger through the neck opening of the garment an easy matter.
At each end of my hanger I have provided the flexible end supports I2 which prevent the garment from becoming baggy at the shoulders. Without the end supports a bump is formed by the material being stretched over the ends I3 15 and I4 of the members I and 9 over which said supports are slipped.
The supports I2 are preferably constructed of rubber or the like each having a hooked curved. upper surface I5 which distributes the load or weight of the garment over a substantial part of the shoulders.
The ferrules 4 and I may be of metal and formed with inwardly projecting barbs I6 engaging the members I and 9 or screws, rivets or pins 20 I! may be provided to secure said ferrules to said members. The shape of the ferrule may be substantially the shape of the members or parts may be raised to provide the ears I8 for the latch pins I9 or the bevelled boss 20 over which the latch end 2| slips into engagement automatically when the members are aligned for supporting the The spring 22 holds the latch end in the engaged position and may be overcome by depressing the latch lever 23.
The latch lever may 'be within the ferrules as shown in Fig. 10 of the drawing and may also be provided with a tooth 24 as shown in Figs. 9 and 10 which engages an aperture 25 in one of the ferrules or may be provided with an aperture 26 which receives a tooth or pin 21 as shown in Figs. 11 and 12. When the boss 23 is internally positioned a push button 28 accessible from the exterior is provided for depressing the lever to release said members from their position of alignment while supporting the garment. The members forced to the position overcome the spring and automatically thus force the latch into engagement and thus locking the members together until released by the movement of said lever.
The aperture 25 may be covered to add to the smoothness of the hanger by the raised member 29 secured to or formed integral with the ferrule.
I do not Wish to be limited to the details herein 55 disclosed to illustrate my device and for clarity as I may wish to depart therefrom within the scope of the appended claims which set forth my invention.
I claim:
1. In a garment hanger having garment supporting members and ferrules secured thereto to hingeably secure said members to each other, said ferrules secured to the ends of said members and having a latch and hinge locking and securing said ferrules and members to each other for 3. In a garment hanger having garment supporting members hingeably secured to each other, latch and hinge means securing said members to each other, a latch lever pivotally mounted on one of said members and means engaging said latch lever on the other of said members, thereby securing said members in alignment and releasing said members to swing in relation to each other by pressing said lever.
4. In a garment hanger having garment supporting members hingeably secured to each other, and ferrules secured to the ends of said members having a latch and hinge securing said ferrules and members to each other, a latch lever and means on said latch lever to release said latch to permit said members to swing on their hinge out of alignment for removal through the neck openingof the garment and means locking said members together when forced into alignment releasable by pressing said latch lever.
