1 Claim.
My invention relates to a pipe having a plastic stem.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a pipe having a stem, tube or body portion constructed of plastic material. My pipe is greatly reduced in weight when compared with those pipes having bri-ar or metal stems. The lightness of my pipe and its desirable distribution of weight make its handling by a smoker .much easier, in that tiring lifting and holding of unnecessary weight is eliminated. Plastic is substantally non-heat conducting so that the stem where the pipe is normally held by the smoker never gets uncomfortably hot or inconvenient to handle. My plastic stem permits a wide range of color choice, including the use of designs and rich wood simulations. This choice permits pleasing not only the tastes of masculine smokers but also affords dainty designs and pastel shades, available for the first time to lady pipe smokers. My plastic stem is adapted to receive deposits of harmful condensates therein and thus provide a more healthful smoke to the user. Plastic is easy to clean, and 25 my stem being open on both ends may be readily and thoroughly cleaned. My stems may be moulded into desired shapes and designs at great speed and unusual economy for the pipe industry. My pipe has such other objects, ad- 30 vantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawing preferred embodiments of my invention, yet I wish it understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring more particularly "to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view and Fig. 2 a 40 top plan view of a preferred embodiment of my pipe; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 4 is a modified form of my pipe showing metal inserts in the stem; Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed sectional view through the metal inserts on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of my stem adapted to fit a conventional pipe.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a pipe [0 having a body member or stem I l of plastic material, which is substantially tasteless, light, non-absorbent, washable, mouldable, and in desired colors, designs or simulations of wood or the like. The outer surface of walls l2 of stem Il may be plain or have spaced ribs l4 and grooves IE or any suit-1 able design or configuration.
The body member I I has a hollow interior I3, an open front end l6 and an open rear end H. The latter is adapted to removably receive by friction grip mouthpiece stem l8 of amber, amberoid, or desired composition.
In the preferred form of my pipe, adjacent the outer end I6 of the body member II at the top portion thereof is a fiat receiving portion 23- upon which may be seated the flat bottom 24 of bowl 25, of briar, clay, corn cob or any other suitable material, so that the opening 26 of the bowl registers with opening 21 in receiving portion 23. A fastening member 28 preferably in the form of a metal screw with a central aperture 29 in the head 30 and threaded shank 3| passes through openings 26 and 21 and holds the bowl 25 to the body member II.
I provide a removable metal closure 42 for the open front end l6 of the body member ll, adapted to fit by friction grip, screw threads or any suitable means.
The metal closure 42 and metal screw 28 aid in the absorption of heat from the smoke, making the same cooler before passing into the mouth of the user.
The plastic stem ll being substantially a nonconductor of heat is never uncomfortably warm and furnishes a proper handle for the hand of the smoker between or during puffs.
If greater radiation is desired, metal inserts 15 may be provided in the stem above or below the portion grasped by the hand of the smoker.
My plastic stem may also be used for removable friction grip attachment within the stub 16 of a conventional pipe.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A pipe comprising a non-metallic hollow body member extending the major portion of the length of the pipe, a non-metallic bowl mounted on said body member adjacent its front end and communicating with the interior of said body member, a short mouthpiece attached to the rear end of said body member, said body member having a plurality of spaced out out portions of substantial size, and metal inserts attached to said body member and covering said out out portions, said metalinserts aiding in the radiation of heat from smoke formed in the bowl and passing through the interior of said body member.
