Similar `reference characters indicate corresponding yparts throughout the several views in Referring tothe drawings in detail, the machine constituting 'the present invention comprisesa casing, a portion thereof being indicated generally at A, and may be of the desired size and shape in accordance with the requirements vfor the storingof one or any number of grades orbrands of smokers` products, such as cigarettes, cigarsA or the like, preferablycigarettes unpackagedfand loose for' vending of the same in single This casingA'has rising frorn'its enlarged lower portion I0 a perpendicularly arranged columnar upper portion I I while within the lower portion I0 is disposed superposedwith respect to the bottom I2' of. said casing a horizontally arranged flooring `or supporting bed I3 dividing the said portion Il) into upper and lower compartments respectively.`
I4 and I5,
AFixed toi` the flooring bed I3 is a perpendicularly upper portion of the saine a relatively narrow magazine I1 which is vertically carried into the upper columnar portion I I. This magazine is of a size to accommodate stacked cigarettes I8 unpackaged and loosely conned superimposed with relation to each other within said magazine. The capacity of the magazine I1 may be varied for accommodating a required number of cigarettes I 8, these being admitted to the said magazine through the open upper end thereof, the casing A being equipped with a top door I9 sothat access may be had to the columnar portion II for the lling of said magazine I1 in the charging thereof with loose cigarettes I8.
At or close to the lower end of lthe magazine is a laterally extending guide ledge- 24| .for-slidably supporting an ejector 2| havingareceiving and delivering pocket 22 for registeringwith the magazine I1 when in receiving position .-for a lowermost cigarette I6 of the stack within "the magazine I1. The ejector 2'Il has clearance through suitable openings in opposite sidewalls ofthevmagazinell forthe travel of said :ejector to receiving and delivering positions, The delivering position of the ejector 2| is when the same has moved to bringkthe pocket 22 laterally 'to one side of the magazine I11outof registration therewith. The pocket'22in.the'ejector 2| opens upwardly and downwardly therethrough, theycigarette being accommodated therein .enters through the uppermost opening while the-.delivery of said cigarette from the pocket is had through the lower opening. t j

At one side ofthebracket I6 `andjoiunaled thereon is va'driven gear 2.5v meshing with a pinion 26 loose upon a driving shaft 21. isuitably journaled at 28 which has worm screw and'worm gear connections 29 with the power shaft 'of an electric motor 30, being iixedly arranged'within the compartment I5 interiorly of the casing A. The shaft 21 has keyed or `splined thereon a tripping sleeve 3| which with the pinion 26 has companion clutch formations 32 so that when the sleeve 3| is shifted in one direction the pinion 26 will be made fast on the shaft 21 for rotation therewith and by movement of said sleeve 3| in a reverse directionthe pinion 26 becomes loose on said shaft 21. When the pinion 26 becomes fast on the shaft 21, power from the .motor 30 is transmitted to the gear 25 for the driving of the same.
Carried by the bracket I6 is a guide 33 foran actuator slide 34 being of substantially upset U form providing. the arms 35 and 36, respectively. The arm 35 slidably engages in the guide 33 and this slide 34 has formed therein an :elongated perpendicularly disposed slot 31 accommodating a wrist'pin 38 eccentrically'xedlto the .gear
25 so that on rotation of the'Y latter the sai'dlslide will be reciprocated thereby. The slide 34 is formed with an ear 33 having connection at 4I! with a head block 4I provided with a rest lip 42 coactive with a rest lip 43 joined with the mouth piece 24, these lips being adapted to accommodate the cigarettes I8 when dropped from the pocket 22 in the ejector 2|, the latter receiving the said cigarette at the lowermost portion of the stack within themagazine I1 and thus when the slide 34 is moved in one direction, the single cigarette accommodated upon the lips 42 and 43 will be projected through the mouth piece 24 for the ejecting of said cigarette from the machine.
yWorkingthrough the front of the casing A is .a push or .operating bar 44, its outer end without the machine casing A being tted with a hand Yknob 45 'while ythe inner opposite end is formed with a 4twisted cam acting terminal 46, the cam face 41 thereof being engageable with a stationvaryguide pin l48 rising from the bed I3 inthe Ipa'th of said terminal and kis perpendicularly set. This terminal is in the form of a fork 43 for -straddling the driving shaft 21 and such terminal acts'upon the sleeve 3| on the pushing inwardly ofthebar 44 for'theshifting of said sleeve to clutching ,position with the pinion 26. Built in the casing A is a coin slot 50 of a size for accommodating apredetermined denomination of coin, token or ."'the'like 5| and this chute 53 opens outwardly of the machine for the hand introduction thereinto of the coin, token or the like. In association with-the coin chute 5B is a coin actuated ymechanism of 'any approved constructionfor controlling the bar 44 and in this instance a locking -trigger -52 is .released by the coin 5I from locking engagement with a keeper 53 on the .bar 44 so that said bar can be manually pushed for theautomaticoperation of the machine. The
T-he hinge 56 moves the ejector 2| and this is had through the vlink 51 Vand the -trigger58 coactingwith theyoke 62 when the bar 44 is moved.
Included in the electr-ic motor circuit, its current-wires being indicated at55, is a toggle switch SI5-controlling the-starting and stopping of said motor 30. This toggle switch |56 has operative Yconnection with ari-annular flange (i1v o-n the sleeve v3| `so that on movement of said v sleeve to clutching position with Vthe pinion 26 the switch 66 -will 'be moved to circuit-closing position and thus-the motor y30 started. `On reverse `movement ofthe sleeve =3I the switch 166 is moved to open position'for the stopping of the motor Arrangedfwithtthe motor -is an air blower ator of the machine on the instant of compleor pump 68, its air iiow lead 69' includes the 4teles'co'pi'cally interfltted units 10 and 11|,trespectively, the latter being a part of the head block 4| while.. the former is stationarilyfheldi upon the bracket I6, theftelescopic arrangement-fof thesefunits being necessary due .-toithe-fact that the slide 34 shifts the headlblock' 4| fand .in association with the `saidunit '16`for inter'- secting the said lead 63 is a flow control valve -12'engaged by the arm 36 for operation thereby through its cam acting edge 13 and-in this manner the air flow through vthe lead 69 is controlled,l the air flow being had through the head Iblock 4| for discharge at 14 onto a lcigarette accommodated in the lip 42 for the cleaning of -such' cigarette and also for assuring the auto'- matic' electric lighting of such vcigarette jin a manner presently described. `1
About the air discharge 14 and fitting the "block 4| in confronting relation to the end of the vcigarette I8 when accommodated in the lip 42fon said block 4| is anr electric lighter 15 involving the usual-resistance `coil and-this lighter is'in an lelectric circuit, the current wires thereof being indicated at 16, and such circuit has therein a transformer 11 as well as a mechanically operated. switch 18, the latter being controlled by a striker 19 on the bar 44 which strikeris in the path of the opening andclosin'g arm of the "switch 18. Thus when theswitch `18 is closed `the lighter 'I5 operates for the lighting of the end next thereto of the cigarette |8 at 'the time of ejecting the said cigarettes singly through the mouth piece 24 so that such automatically lighted cigarette can be acquired by the operator fcomrnutator-like rotary switch 8| whichy is fineluded in the circuit vfor the lighter 15 and having the wires 16, the contacts and the wiper of this switch 8| being indicated at 82-and 83, respectively. The wiper 83 being of a double brush or arm type and the purpose of the said switch is for the timing of the lighteraction 145 whenthe switch 18 is closed bythe striker 19 on` the pushing of the bar 44 inwardly and havin`g'the latter held in this position with a striker 'i9 at a point for retaining the said switch 18 closed and in this way a cigarette I8 will `be lighted properly during the cycle of ejecting operation of the machine for the delivery of said lighted cigarette therefrom. It is, of course, understood that when the bar 44 is pushed inwardly for the starting of Athe machineit momentarily closes the switch 18 providing the said bar is relieved of pressure `exerted by .an opertion of the inward stroke of said bar and in this a cigarette I6 will be ejected from the machine but not lighted, being required that the said bar 44 be held pushed inwardly so that through the timing action of the commutator-like switch 8| the lighter 15 will operate for eecting the lighting of 'the cigarette during the ejectingperiod of operation of the machine. The ejecting period of operation of the machine requires a complete rotation of the commutator-like switch 8|. The period of operation of the lighter 15 when the switch 18 is maintained in a closed position is controlled by the extentof the contacts 82 of' said switch 8| for the .successfuly and complete lighting of `the cigarette by the lighter 15. Loose upon the vstud journal 8D is a cam Wing 84 and tensioning this Wing is a `coiled spring 85 about said stud journal 80, one end being xedto thecommutator switch 8|, that is, the rotatableinsulator body thereof, and the other end` connected to said wing 84. while fixed inthe body ofthe switchl is a pin 86' engaged in an arcuate slot 81.:formed in said wing 84 and in this manner the saidwing 84 when cooperating with the annular flange 88 on the sleeve 3| will vhave snap action for quickqrelease from the flange 88;:the wing` 84 being operated for movement of l the sleeve 3| reversely to the movement thereof` by the cam 46 and thus automatically actuating the toggle switch 66 for opening the circuit-through the wires 65 tothe motor 3|] and thus stopping saidmotor for rendering the machinepassive or inactive. The cam Wing 34 rides 'the flange 88 of the sleeve 3| and two positions` thereof being ings i The valve 12 has therein a spring 89 for the indicated in Figure 6 of the drawpositive cooperation thereof with the arm 36 ofthe slide 34. i `wI'n' theV working of the machine, cigarettes I3 in single order willbe ejected therefrom, either` .lighted or unlighted at the option of the operator of the? machine and at the same time the said cigarette concurrently with the ejecting thereof will be subjected to an air current for the cleaning of such cigarette to remove dust or impurities therefrom and this air under pressure `assures the perfect lighting of the cigarette by `the lighter.-15' when operating for this purpose. Duringlthe lighting operation of the cigarette, those remaining within' the magazine I1 are shielded from the smoke of the lighted cigarette iduring ejecting' thereof and also from the possiibility of conlagration starting within the ma- Ichineso thatv the latter is rendered reproof.
'The full in stroke ofthe bar 44 after the `deposit of a coin 5| within the machine A efzfects `theautomatic operation of the machine for.` the ejecting of a cigarette singly from said machina Now when the striker 19 is brought to rest for the closing of the switch 18 through a short stroke of thebar 44, the lighter 15 becomes 'active for the lighting of the cigarette `concurrentlywith the single ejection thereof from the machine.
`When the bar 44 has completed its full inward stroke, lthe circuit -to the motor 30 is completed and .the latter becomes operative for the auto. `matic working -of .fthe machine A. The period of 1 i operation for the ejecting of a cigarette from the machine A requires a complete cycle of rotation Lof the commutator switch 8| and by contact of .the striker 19 with the switch 18 on the partial outward stroke of the bar 44 effects the lighting of the cigarette during the ejecting of the same from the machine, being understood, of course, that this switch 18 must be maintained closed for a determined period lof .time for the lighting operation of said lighter 15.
fThe-transfer of .the cigarettes I8 in single or- (from impurities and clean inthat dust and foreign matter is entirely 'removed :therefrom to 'avoid contamination when the cigarette is being smoked by a smoker.
