Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES D. ALLEN, OF AMBOY, ILLINOIS.
wAToH-MAKr-:Frs Tool..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,211, dated January 6, 1880. Application filed October 31, 1879.
To all whom t't may concern Be it known that I, JAMES D. ALLEN, of Amboy, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combination Watch-Tools, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures otl reference marked there on.
Figure l of the drawings is arepresentation of a side elevation of Iny invention. Fig. 2 is a top-plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an under-side plan View.
This invention has for its object to provide a tool that can be used to advantage by watch-makers and in watch-repairing; in removing the hands, winding and setting the watch, removing the screws and pins for fastening dial-plates; also, holding the hand securely while reaming it out, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the tool, whereby it is adapted to the various uses above named, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the shank of the tool ilattened upon its ends, and it may be of any suitable metal, and either square, round, or other desirable form.
One end of the shank A is bifurcatcd, to adapt it for use in removing that class of second and minute hands of watches having a round sleeve or bushing, usually found in the Swiss watches, while the opposite portion of the shank is formed with a rectangular recessed end, b, to adapt it for use in removing that class of minute and hour hands havinga square bushing or sleeve.
The bifurcated end a has its points brought to an edge, so as to form a double screwdriver, c c', for removing screws of diii'erent sizes.
The upper side of the shank A, nea-r the bifurcated end a, is formed with a recess, d, and bridge e, having a slot, f; also, a hole, g, and groove h, to adapt the tool for holding second-hands While reaming them out in tting new ones, the sleeve or bushing of the hand being inserted in the hole g, with its long end seated in the groove lz', and its opposite or short end passing in and beyond the slot j', and resting in that portion of the recess d forward of the bridge e, thereby holding the hand stationary and firm and removing the danger of breaking or bending it during the process of reaming.
The reverse side of the bifurcated end a may be used for removing the dial-pins of the watch, or those pins that hold the dial on the movements, by simply laying the tool on the pin and pressing the tool against the upper plate of the watch, which will force the pin out easily.
The endv b may also be used for setting and winding watches.
In ease the hands are tight and difficult to remove, I provide the tool, near each of its ends, with a 'ulcrum-pin, t', so as to obtain a leverage when pressing' down upon the shank of the tool, thereby rendering the removal of the hands comparatively easy.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is
l. The tool herein described, consisting of the shank A, formed with bifurcatcd end a, double screw-driver c c', and the rectangular recessed end b, substantially as herein described.
2. The shank A, formed upon its face with the recess d, bridge e, with slot f, hole g, and groove It, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 4
3. The tool herein described, consisting of the bifurcated end a, screw-drivers c c', recess d, bridge e, with slot j', hole g, and groove h, and recessed end b, and the fulcrum-pins t', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J AMES D. ALLEN.
