Description

Feb. 18, 1941. w. N. DANIELS DRAINAGE BAG Filed Feb. 17; 1940 INVENTOR. Mil/am [\Z fiarzz'els X a4 1/ I A TTQRNE X Patented Feb. 18, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT Orr-ice 8 lCla-ims.
it for many months to find a suitable bag 'for'my use but could find none, either in the hospital supply department or in places dealing in such supplies.
After much study and experimenting -I learned that the dimensions of the bag must be determined, the material used must be flexible and waterproof, durable and easily cleaned, and the device so fitted to the body of a wearer that it may be worn in comfort whether walking or rest ing in an inclined position.
The object of my invention is to provide a drainage bag construction for the purposes stated which may be made at a low cost and which will be of proper form and dimensions,
- with flexible means for securing thebag to the body of a wearer in a proper manner to permit easy adjustment in securing the bag to the body,
and to maintain the bag in a distended condition and in fluid tight relation with the body of the wearer.
A further object is to provide a bag of the character described, with a removable inner lining of waterproof material to directly receive the excretions from the body of a wearer, which 0 thereafter may be removed from the outer bag together with its contents, without removing the outer bag from the body, and a new bag inserted for further use. L
Some further objects of my invention will be hereinafter set forth. l
Referring to the drawing which forms a part of the specifications:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bag construction embodying my invention, disclosing the inner or contact side of the bag which rests against the body of the wearer, together with the inner lining receptacle which is removable therefrom.
Figs. 2 and 3 show a vertical section thru the middle of the bag and lining receptacle, and the cap for the bag shown in Fig. 2, and made to fit over the top in fluid tight relation.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of a supporting memberwhich fits in the upper endof the bag in freely removable relation and is vertically ad- 5 justable therein, and serves to maintain the proper spaced opening between the inner walls of the bag and inner" receptacle.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of theconstruction shown H in Fig. l. V I "10 Fig. 6 -is a perspective View of the inner receptacle, formed to fit easily into the outer bag and conforming to the shape thereof in the form of a lining;
The bag 10 is preferably made of soft rubber '15 or'Neoprene, or other suitable material that is waterproof and will permit' of thorough cleaning repeatedly without seriousdeterioration.
The measurements of the bag should be approximately as follows: g
5 inches wide, about 8 inches long, and the opening across about1 inches, and the circular opening about 2"inches in diameter for the colostomy which projects into the bag when properly adjusted. 1
l3 indicates a nonrustable thin resilient metal brace formed substantially as illustrated, and comprising a resilient wire M, the ends of which are hook shaped and are attached to the brace in detachable relation, said wire resting just below the opening l2 of the bag. '40
On the outerside of the bag a loop I? is formed integral with the bag, andextends from about inch below the top rim-downwardly for about '2 inches, and an elastic belt l6 is'pa-ssed thru the loop and is adjustable relative thereto, and 5 its ends are secured by a buckle of nonrustable materiaLor other suitable means, not shown.
' The distance between the inturned edges [3' is about 3 inches.
The inner receptacle ll maybe made of water- 50 proof paper or thin oil-cloth that is strong enough for the'required purpose, .and may be discarded after its original use together with its contents, this arrangement being sanitary as well as avoiding many difficulties heretofore ex- 55 worn without undue pressure on the body while maintaining a fluid tight relation therewith? that all odors are suppressed; that the device takes up very little space; and that it may be worn with comfort.
In making the bag I preferto make-the lower;
ends curved in form to avoid sharp comers and to prevent the lodgment of excretionstherein, the
form of said corner portions being shown as indicated at l9. l g
It will be understood that the bag may be used without the inner receptacle in the event that one .is not available at the time required.
It will also be understood that minor changes in the form of thebag and of the inner receptacle may be made, and also the brace construction may be altered so long as it is made to serve the functions of distending the upper end of the bag and is formed to provide an opening thru which excreta may pass in a proper manner.
' In removing the inner receptacle from thebag, the belt is stretched enough to relieve the pressure on the tab end I1 and the cap ll removed from the top, after which the flap portion 18 may be grasped and the receptacle easily removed from the bag, as will be readily understood.
While I have described the brace as being made of metal, it may be made of any suitable material that will serve the functions of a distending bnace that isresilient and that will stand scalding water and chemical action required'to keep it in a sanitary condition.
