Application rNovemlmer 9, 1939, Serial No. 303,628
' 2 Claims.
rIhis invention relates to abrading devices for removing human hair and has particular reference to an improved device of this character which is so constructed and arranged that the abrasive surface thereof may be disposed tangentially to the surface ofthe skin for removing the hair from a localized area without contacting with adjacent areas thereof.
The invention comprehends an abrading devicel of the indicated character which includes a member having aconvex forward face provided with an abrasive surface and having a handle so connected therewith as to facilitate the disposing of the convex face tangentially to the skin.
The invention further includes a disk-like member constructed of compressed cardboard, paperboard and the like which is pro-vided with a convex forward face and` a rearwardly curved rim merging into an outwardly extending peripheral flange, said face and rim having an abrasive forward surface and said member having a handle connected with the rear thereof for manipulating the device.
The invention further provides in certain of its forms, a disk-like member of the character set forth having manipulating means secured to the rear surface thereof in the depression formed by the rearwardly curved rim.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, reference is now made to the following specification and the accompanying drawing in which there is illustrated the preferred forms of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of an abrading device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a further modification of the invention illustrating the handleforming elements in active position.
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5, illustrating the handle-forming elements in folded position.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference and more particularly to the form of the (Cl. {i1-186) invention illustrated' in Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, the abrading device includes a member I0 preferably constructed of compressed cardboard, paperboard and the like and which is also preferably disk-shaped or of circular formation in plan having a central portion provided with a convex forward face II and a rearwardly curved marginal rim I2 which merges into an outwardly extending peripheral flange I3.
The member I0 is provided with an abrasive material secured thereto and covering the convex forward face II and the outer face of the curved rim I2, the abrasive material preferably consistlng of finely powdered emery adhesively bonded to the outer face of a sheet of flexible material Ill which sheet is adhesively secured to the forward face II and the outer face of the curved rim I2 with the annular edge of the sheet secured to and overlying a portion of the flange I3.
A handle is provided lwhich includes a hand gripping portion I5, and an enlarged substantially circular portion I6 of a diameter corresponding substantially with the diameter of the member IU. As illustrated in the said embodiment of the invention, the handle is provided with plane opposite faces I'I and I8 to each of which faces one of said members I is secured preferably by adhesively bonding the ange I3 thereto with the outer edges of the flanges flush with the marginal edge of the portion I6 of the handle. This disposes the convex portion II of the member I0 in spaced relation with the portion IS of the handle and which portion II having its outer face convex in all radial directions may be disposed tangentially to the surface of the skin for removing the hair from a localized area thereof without contacting with adjacent areas.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, the abrading device includes a member 20 similar to the member I il illustrated in lthe previous form of the invention, and which includes a central portion having a convex upper surface 2l, a rearwardly curved rim 22 and an outwardly directed peripheral flange 45 23 merging with the rim 22, the outer convex surface 2| and the outer face of the rim 22 being covered with abrasive material such as a sheet of material 24 secured to and overlying the said convex face 2I and the outer face of the rim 50 22 and having a coating of finely powdered emery bonded to the exposed face of said sheet. In this form of the invention, a handle 25 is detachably associated with the member 20 my means of a socket element 26 secured to the rear face 55 of the convex central portion of the member 20 which element 26 is provided with a diametrically extending rearwardly offset loop portion 21 which slidably receives the reduced shank 28 of the handle 25, the terminal of the shank portion and the juncture of the handle 25 therewith engaging the rear surface of the ilange 23 at diametrically opposite points.
In lthe formof the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, the abraiding device includes a member 30 of substantially identical :form to the members l0 and 20 of the previous forms of the invention and which comprises a central portion having a convex outer face 3l provided with an abrasive coating thereon', a rearwardly curved marginal rim 32 and an outwardly .extending peripheral ange 33. In this form, however,` the handle includes a pair of oppositely disposed mating elements 34 and 35, each having a semicircular base portion 35 adhesively or otherwise secured to the inner face of the central portion of the member 30 and each having a swingably connected wing portion 31 adapted to be swung from a folded position in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the iiange 33 as illustrated in Fig. 6, to an active position parallel with each other and perpendicular to the plane of the ange in which position the said wings are adapted to be jointly grasped vto provide a handle by means of which the device is manipulated.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described, a member having a convex forward face, a rearwardly curved rim and a marginal ange eX- tending outwardly from said rim, an abrasive sheet secured to the convex face of said member, and a handle including a pair of elements secured to the rear face of the convex `portion of said member and .having rearwardly directed hand gripping portions swingably connected thereto respectively and adapted to be swung from a folded position in a plane parallel with the plane of the flange to a contacting position parallel with `each other and perpendicular to the plane of the flange.
2. In a device of the character described, a member having a forward face and a rearwardly curved marginal rim, an abrasive sheet secured to the forward face of said member, and a handle therefor including a pair of wings secured to the rear face of said member and swingable forwardly and rearwardly for disposing the same in folded and projected relation therewith in planes substantially parallel to and at right angles therewith respectively.
