Description

E. D. DAGUE. Road Scraper and Leveler.
No. 223,117. Patented Dec. 30,1879.
INVENTOR Q ATTORNEY L WITNESSES cffyC/zad o' wAsmNGTcN D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEETeE ENGLAND D. DAGUE, OF MONROEVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD SCRAPERS AND LEVELERS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,117, dated December 30, 1879; application filed October 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENGLAND D. DAG-UE, of Monroeville, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Road Scrapers and Levelers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a top view of my improved road scraper and leveler, and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in road scrapers and levelers and the nature of the invention consists in certain novel combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a strong rectangular board, to which is rigidly secured the draft-tongue a and drivers seat I]. It has also secured to its lower edge a transversely-concave cutting blade, (I, having in its upper edge the slots 0, by means of which and the clamp-screws c the blade is adjusted to penetrate the soil more or less, as maybe required. At each end of this board is rigidly secured a metallic plate, B, having a spindle, a, projecting obliquely, upon which a metallic beam, (1, vibrates vertically. This beam has at its front a wrist, 1), upon which is fulcrumed a vertically-vibrating lever, D, at fording bearings at its front end to a transporting'wheel, D, and provided at its power end with a chain, E.
The side beam, 0, projects equally both to the front and rear of the board A, or nearly so, and is provided at its rear extremity with a horizontally-vibrating arm, F, carrying at its rear end a transporting-wheel, D which, owing to the vibration of arm F, has the functions of a caster-wheel, and greatly facilitates turning the apparatus.
Gr indicates a crank-lever, arranged near the ends of board A, in suitable bearings, g, on the upper edge thereof, and operated by a lever, H, secured to its endadjacent to the drivers seat. The inner bearings, g, of the crank-levers G are each provided with a segmental ratchet, 9, that is engaged by a spring-actuated pawl, h, moving endwise in guides upon the lever, and operated to release the cranklevers by means of a thumb-lever and connecting-rod. The free ends of the crank-1e vers G terminate in hooks Z, or their equivalents, and the chains E upon the ends of the levers D are adj ustably engaged therewith, so that if the levers H be thrown to the front the power ends of levers D will be raised and the cutting-blade raised partly or wholly out of the ground, for less penetration, or for the purpose of dropping any accumulation of soil.
As shown in Fig. 1, the pole is oblique to the board A, as are also the beams G, the obliquity being equal. Consequently the transporting-wheels D D follow in the line of draft, and the scraper and leveling device A d is oblique thereto, and acts upon the surface of the road with a draw-cut.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the board A, having the cutter d and end spindles, a, of the beams O, vibrating on said spindles, levers D on the front ends of said beams, the transporting-wheels D at the weight end of said levers, the horizontally-vibrating arms F, the rear transporting-wheels, D, at the end of said arms, and a pawl, ratchet, and lever mechanism operating levers D,.substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the scraping and leveling board A and the beams O, vibrating vertically on the ends of said board, of a caster-wheel, D at the rear end of said beams, a lever, D, at the front end thereof, a transporting-wheel, D, rotating on the lever, and
a lock mechanism controlling the levers D,
substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the scraper and leveler A d and the vertically-vibrating crossbeams O at the ends thereof, of a caster-wheel at the rear end of said beams and an elevating-wheel at the front end thereof, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with the scraper and In testimony that I claim the above I have leveler board A d, having the oblique spinhereunto subscribed my name in the presence (lles a at its ends, of the oblique vertieallyof two Witnesses. vibrating cross-beams U, the caster-wheel D 1 1 i at its rear end, the elevating-Wheel D at its ENGLAND DAGUE' front end, and the pole a, secured obliquely Witnesses: to the board and parallel to beams O, as set DAVID S. REDELSHEIMER, forth. JOHN L. DUNEAM.
