GRADING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known 'that I, CARL O. lVoLo, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grading-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to road graders and is desi ned as an improvement over a inachine or similar purposes shown and described in Letters Patent No. 918,633, issued to me April 20 1909.
The object oi the invention is to simplify and improve the mechanism for raising or lowering the frame of the machine and tilting the scraper blade.
The invention consists generally in a frame, a scraper blade secured thereto, rearwardly extending bars pivoted on said frame, crank axles pivoted in said bars and having carrying wheels, and operating levers pivoted on said bars and having toggle connections With said crank axles.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a p erspective view of a road grading machine embodying my invention, Figs. 2 and Bare detail views showing the diiierent positions of the toggle mechanism, Fig. 4 is a rear view of the same, Fig` 5 is a detail view showing the construction of the carrying wheels.
In the drawing, 2 represents the forward axle, having a draft pole 3 and carrying Wheels 4. These wheels are made of angle bars bent into a circular form, the flanges of the bars forming cutting edges 5 which dig into the soil and prevent slippage sidewise of the machine. The ends of the angle bars are secured together in a suitable manner, as by welding, and the wheels made in this Way are much more substantial and durable than when made from cast metal.
6 is a draw-bar pivotally connected at 7 with the steering pole and having a drivers seat 8 at its rear end. Intermediate to the ends of the draw-bar is a frame ii'hereon the scraper blade is mounted. This frame consists, preferably, of side bars 9 having offsets 10 therein, joined together at their tor- Ward ends by a cross bar 11 that is capable of adjustment longitudinally on the drawbar by means of a pin passing through holes in the bar 11 and similar holes 13 in a plate 14 that passes under the draw-bar and has its ends secured to the bars 9. The drawbar, the bars 9 and the bar 11 are all preferably constructed of channel bar metal to provide for a maximum of strength and rigidity with a minimum of Weight. The rear ends of the bars 9 are connected by a cross bar 15, also, preferably of channel bar material, and to this cross bar 15 the forivard ends of rearwardly extending brackets 16 are pivoted on pivots 17 which are mounted in the bar 15 and in straps 18 which are secured to the end portions of a scraper blade 19 that is disposed, preferably, beneath the offsets 1() and has its upper edge secured to the bars 9 by suitable means at a point 20. A bar 16 connects the rear end of the draw-bar 6 with one of the brackets 16, for the purpose of holding said brackets and the axles joiirnaled therein in proper relation with respect to the scraper blade and the draw-bar.
Crank axles 21 are pivoted in bearings in the brackets 16 and have carrying wheels 22. The rear ends of these brackets are connected with one another for simultaneous movement by a strap 5l, so that lateral oscillation of one bracket will cause a similar movement of the other one. Upon these brackets quadrants 24 are mounted and levers 25 have their loiver ends pivoted on these brackets and provided With locking latches 2G which engage the quadrants 24. Links 26 are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the levers 25 and at their lower ends to the crank axles near the hubs of the carrying Wheels, said levers having a series of holes 27 at their inner upper ends to allow for adjustment With respect to the levers 25. These levers and links form in eiiect a toggle joint, the forward movement of the levers lowering the frame Qt the machine and the edge of the scraper, as shown in Fig. 2, and the backward movement of the levers raising the frame and scraper, as shown in Fig. 3; and it is evident that, as the links 26 approach the pivotal Connection of the levers with the brackets 16, that the power of the levers will he increased and as the links swing hackwardly from these pivotali points the leverage Will be decreased. l am thus able to utilize the increase in leverage to handle the scraper at a point` in the operation ot' the machine Where the maximum of leverage is desired. The leverage described also allows for the tine adjustment of the scraper to regulate llO the depth of the furrow when the machine is in operation. The adjustment is also rapid, as the levers can be quickly unlocked and thrown from one position to the other and one lever may. be operated independrently of the other, so that one end of the scraper may be raised or lowered by the movement of one lever without changing the position of the other lever.
Whenever desired, the position of the scraper with respect to the draw-bar can be changed to obtain'the desired angle of the scraper with respect' to the work. This adjustinent. of the scraper blade forms, however, the subject-matter of my Letters Patent above referred to and I make no claim to the same herein. The manner of mounting the brackets on the frame and the form of brackets may be modified, and the con* nections between the levers and the crank axles may be varied and still be within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention 1. In a grading machine, a frame, a scraper blade carried thereby, brackets projecting rearwardly from said frame, crank axles Journaled in said brackets and having carrying wheels, levers pivoted on said brackets, rigid links pivotally connected at their upper ends to said levers and at their lower ends to said crank axles. the forward movement of said levers moving said links substantially into alineinent with said levers and increasingr the leverage thereof on said crank axles, and the backward movement of said levers movingl said links away from the pivots of said levers and decreasing the leverage on said crank axles.
2. In a grading machine, a draw-bar, a frame mounted thereon and comprising end bars and cross bars between them, one of said cross bars having a series of holes therein, a plate also having a series of holes beneath said cross bar, a pin fitting within the holes in said cross bar and plate, and a corresponding hole in said draw-bar, and a scraper blade carried by said frame.
3. In a grading machine, a frame, a scraper blade carried thereby, rearwardly projecting brackets, crank axles journaled in the lower portions of said brackets, levers pivoted in the upper portions of said brackets near the rear ends thereof, said crank axles extending rearwardly to a point beneath said levers, carrying wheels mounted on said crank axles, and links pivotall connecting the rear portions of said cran axles with said levers.
4. The combination, with a frame, of a scraper blade, rearwardly projecting brackL ets, crank axles journaled in the lower middle portions of said brackets, carrying wheels mounted on the rear ends of said axles, levers pivoted on the upper rear por tions of said brackets and having quadrants and locking latches therefor, links having their lower ends journaled on the rear ends of said axles and their upper ends adjustably attached to said levers above the pivots of said levers on `said brackets.
5. ln a grading machine, the combination, with a frame and draw-bar and a scraper blade and rearwardly projecting brackets, of crank axles having carrying wheels, levers -pivoted on V,said brackets, rigid links connecting said levers with said axles and forming a toggle mechanism, the power of said levers increasing and the movement of said links decreasing with the movement ot' said levers in one direction, and the movement of said links increasing` and the power of said levers decreasing with the movement of said levers in the opposite direction.
