  • My present invention relates to the application of liquid adhesive to blanks and the like, particularly in the manufacture of paperboard and similar boxes and other containers. It aims to provide improved mechanism for the purpose stated and whereby the adhesive may be applied with extreme regularity, over uninterrupted areas or over selected spots or areas, including provisions for controlled and accurate adjustment as to the thickness of the adhesive film, together with various other features which will be apparent from the disclosure herein.

My present invention relates to the application of liquid adhesive to blanks and the like, particularly in the manufacture of paperboard and similar boxes and other containers. It aims to provide improved mechanism for the purpose stated and whereby the adhesive may be applied with extreme regularity, over uninterrupted areas or over selected spots or areas, including provisions for controlled and accurate adjustment as to the thickness of the adhesive film, together with various other features which will be apparent from the disclosure herein.

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, portions of the main side frames of the machine are seen at I, I. Extending across between the side frames is a plurality of fixed cross rods, two of which are seen at 2, 2 in Fig. 1. The articles tobe glued, 55 such as the blank indicated as a whole by the character B in Fig. 3, are caused to travel lengthwise the .machine on conveyor means herein represented as endless belts 3, 3 underlying the blanks just inwardly of their portions to be glued. These belts, only the upper runs of which are 5 seen in Figs. 1 and 2, are guided on carrier frames 4 supported on said cross rods 2 with capacity for adjustment thereon laterally of the machine to accommodate different sizes of blanks or the like. Belt supporting rolls 3a, Figs. 2 and 4, may be 10 provided on the frames 4. Positive travel of the blanks on the conveyor means without objectionable slippage desirably is insured by presser rolls 3b engaging the upper faces of the blanks,-as also seen in said Figs. 2 and 4, said rolls being carried 15 by brackets on and laterally adjustable with the carrier frames 4.
The typical blank B of Fig. 3 is there shown with its inner face up. The areas or spots to receive adhesive are indicated by the shaded portions a, b, c. at the two sides or ends of the blank.
As fed by the conveyors 3 the blanks are inverted,
as compared with the position of Fig. 3, so that their inner faces and gluing areas are down. The flap or other portions which are to be glued project laterally outward beyond the respective conveyor belts 3, in position to be acted on by the gluing or adheslve=applying mechanism to be described.
Said adhesive-applying mechanism comprises a container or pot ID for the liquid adhesive, one at each side of the machine in the present instance, for the opposite side or end portions of the blanks. These adhesive-containing chambers are hereinafter referred to as the glue pots. -It will be understood that the term glue throughout the specification and claims is used broadly to refer to any fluid or semi-fluid adhesive adapted to be applied as a film through the medium of rotary devices.
The glue pots III, as seen in Fig.1, are also supported for adjustment laterally of the machine, as upon the cross rods 2!, for cooperation with different sizes and shapes of blanks and to conform to the various adjusted positions of the blank conveyor means 3, 3. Each glue pot comprises a main casting including a bottom wall II which may be formed with a drain plug I 2, an outer side wall l3 and front and rear or end walls l4, IS. The inner side walls for the pots are in the form of cover plates l6 detachably secured to the pot casting as by screws; see particularly Fig. 4.
The glue pots H) as a whole are both adjustably and demountably associated with their supporting rods 2. One of their opposed integral walls has a projecting lug I! through which are tapped one or more leveling screws I8, see Figs. 5 and 7, receivable on the adjacent cross rod 2. The opposite wall is formed with an externally projecting clamping lug l9 having an arcuate recess in its under face for seating it on one of the cross rods 2. The pots are so constructed that they may be reversed endwise, for use at either side of the machine. Since they and their associated parts are or may be duplicated at the two sides of the machine, being so illustrated in the present example, a description of either of them will suffice.
Each pot I0 is held in adjusted position along the cross rods as by means of a U-shaped clamp 20 the legs of which are apertured for reception on the cross rod, in position to straddle the lug IQ of the pot. The cross piece of this clamp carries a set screw 2l-. By turning down the latter, the underlying lug i9 may be firmly clamped against the cros rod, in the position as seen in Fig. 7. The pot may readily be released by backing out the set screw and swinging the clamp 20 down away from the clamping lug l9.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 4, each glue pot H] has operatively disposed within it a glue wheel 23 positioned to dip into the glue. These glue wheels are of hollow construction with one closed end, the latter having a central hub 24 keyed on the inner end of the corresponding glue wheel shaft 25. The shaft of each glue wheel extends out through an elongated bearing boss 26 on the outer side wall l3 of its pot. An elongated packing gland and bearing element 21 is interposed between the shaftand the boss 26, having adjustable threaded engagement with the latter as indicated at 28, packing being provided at the inner end of the gland between it and an end flange on the boss 26, as at 21a. A lock nut 29 is threaded externally on the gland 21 in position to abut the outer face of the boss 26 firmly to hold the packing gland in adjusted position. The gland desirably has an internal annular recess 30 for lubricant for the bearing surfaces, lubricant being supplied through the channel 3| normally closed as by a plug 32 in the boss.
Laterally beyond each glue pot l0 its gluewheel shaft 25 is supported in a bearing 35 on the adjacent side frame I. Slidably keyed to each shaft is a drive sprocket 36 having a long hub 31 extending outwardly'beyond its bearing 35 and internally grooved to receive the elongated key 25a on the shaft, whereby the latter and the gluepot assembly on it may be shifted laterally to the desired positions of adjustment. An oilless bushing 38 desirably is provided between each sprockethub and its bearing 35. As seen in Fig. 2, the glue-wheel shafts 25 at the two sides of the machine are driven through chains 39 passing about sprockets 40, 40 on a sprocket shaft 4| journaled in the side frames I, this shaft being driven, in any suitable manner, in timed relation with the feeding and. other mechanisms of the machine as a whole.
The glue-wheels 23 carry the glue up on their cylindrical outer surfaces, from the supplies in the pots. In accordance with the present invention the glue thus carried up by the wheels is adapted to be applied directly to the blanks either over continuous areas or over limited areas or spots as may be appropriate for'the particular job. The application of the glue to the area as desired in any given case is controlled and effected by means of accurately timed and positively driven rotary presser mechanism now to be described.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 4 to 8 inclusive this presser mechanism comprises a shaft 45 extending across the machine above the glue pots in and so rotatably supported that it and the presser elements carried by it may yield vertically. This shaft 45 accordingly is journaled in bearing arms 46 at each side of the machine. These arms, one of which is seen separately in Fig. 6, have bearing apertures 41 located between their ends and rotatably receiving the shaft in bushings 46. One end of each arm has a collar 49 rockable on a stud 50 held in a boss 5|. on the adjacent side frame I; see Fig. 5.
The other end of each shaft-supporting arm 46 has threaded into it 9. depending stud 52. A coil spring 53 surrounds each stud, bearing between a head 54 at the lower end of the latter and a projecting abutment 55 fixed on the adjacent side frame I. The tension of the spring 53 may be regulated by turning up or backing ofl. their studs relative to the arms 46. Down movement of the shaft and the presser elements on it, to be described, is accurately limited and controlled as by means of stop studs 56 adjustably threaded through the arms 46 and contacting the fixed abutments 55 above mentioned.
The described presser shaft 45 is positively driven, herein through gearing connections with one of the glue-wheel shafts 25, that at the left side of the machine in the illustrated example. As best seen in Fig. 4, the shaft 45 has keyed on its left end portion a gear 60 meshing with a driving gear 6| fixed on the outer end of the elongated hub 31 of the drive sprocket 36. Thus the presser shaft 45 and sprocket-36 are both driven, in accurately timed relation, from the sprocket shaft 4i previously referred to.
The rotary presser means for engaging the blanks as they travel across the glue wheels, so as to determine the areas to which the glue shall be applied, comprises, a segment carrier, presser cylinder or drum 65, one for each glue wheel. These elements are seen in Fig. 2 and on a larger scale in Figs. 4 and 9. The have the form of hollow cylinders the end walls of which are apertured for reception on the shaft 45. These carriers are adapted to be fixed in accurately adjusted p sition along the shaft 45, each having at one end a split hub 66 carried but partly separated from a central boss 61 on the adjacent end wall of the carrier. Surrounding the hub 66 is a clamp ring 68 carrying a set screw 69 which may be turned down to clamp the carrier 65 firmly on the shaft.
The carriers 65 are constructed and arranged for demountably carrying on their cylindrical outer surfaces the presser formations or elements which engage the upper surface of the blanks and determine what areas of the then under faces of the latter are to receive glue. Where the area to be glued is uninterrupted in the direction of travel of the blanks. the presser element may be formed as a cylindrical shell or sleeve slipped onto the carrier drum 65 endwise, and having continuous circumferential ribs and grooves, or such continuous cylindrical formation may be made up of two or more separate segments. Where spot gluing is desired, that is, in cases where the glued areas or some portion of the total glued areas are interrupted, in the direction of the blank travel, the desired total ribbed area for the presser formation; is conveniently built up from a plurality of segments."
In the illustrated example I have shown segmental presser elements 10 installed on the drum 65 as appropriate for the desired spot gluing of a blank such as illustrated in Fig. 3. The arrangement of the segmental parts for this particular job will readily be understood from the diagrammatical development of Fig. 3a, in which three such segments or segmental strips I are indicated. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be understood that it is undesirable to put glue on the intermediate area marked d, both for the reason that a portion of it would be exposed in the completed box and also because two glued surfaces would be brought together when the turn-in end, including the glued area b, is folded in. Such bringing together of two glued areas is likely to result in the parts not being firmly secured, due to an excess of glue between them. Accordingly the presser elements 10 are in this instance arranged as in Fig. 3a, so as to present ribbed raised portions. ll together defining an area shaped and proportioned to conform to the total gluing area a, b, c of the blank.
While obviously the total ribbed presser formation may be integrally formed on a single segment having portions of it relieved, or may be formed as part of a "complete cylinder or shell, as previously mentioned in connection with continuous gluing, it is preferred to build up the total presser area from separate segmental strips each of which individually. is of uniform width throughout the length of the corresponding carrier drum 65. This makes foreconomy in manufacture and facilitates changing quickly from one pattern to another, with the use of a minimum number of stock pieces.
,One convenient manner of detachably mounting these segmental presser strips F0, or the corresponding complete cylindrical shells, on the drums 55 is herein illustrated. As best seen in Fig. 4, the drums have at one end an undercut or bevelled end flange 12. The detachable elements have their corresponding ends similarly bevelled for reception under the inwardly projecting lip of said flange. They are also similarly bevelled at their opposite ends, for holding engagement by a clamp ring M having a correspondingly bevelled inner edge portion as at 15. This ring is slipped onto the boss. of the particular carrier drum 65, after the segments or shells 10 have been positioned thereon, and prior to applying the carrier clamping ring 68. It is detachably held in segment locking position as by means of a plurality of screws 16 tapped into the adjacent end of the cylinder 65. As seen in Fig. 9', one or more dummy segments 10a having no raised or ribbed area may be provided intermediate the regular segments '10, affording additional abutment surface for the clamping ring." and keeping it accurately perpendicular to the shaft.
The drive gearing, including the gears 60, 6| and the other parts previously described, is so proportioned and designed with reference to the diameter of the glue wheels 23 and the outer diameter of the ribs of the presser elements or segments ill that the latter, the glue wheels and the blank conveyor means all have the same surface speed. In this manner the blanks traveling between the pressers and the glue wheels are engaged and depressed by the raised ribbed presser portions only at the desired areas to be glued, without relative movement or wiping action between the blank and the engaging element either at its under or its upper face. Said engaging elements, that is, the rotary presser and the glue wheel, thus also act to advance the blanks during application of the glue and in time with the conveyor means. From the foregoing description in connection with the drawings it will be noted that the presser elements, which may be common to a plurality of glue pots, and their associated parts are constructed andarranged for ready adjustment affording accurate regulation of the blank clearance space between the pressers and the glue wheels, of the pressure upon the blanks and also of the alignment of the presser elements, as by varying the position of the segments 10 circumferentially of their carriers [5.
The glue from the supply is carried up on the surface of each glue wheel, in a film of uniform and controlled thickness, as determined by the novel glue-film controlling means to be described, and is transferred directly to the blank, but only at the portions thereof which are pressed down onto the glue film by the ribbed areas of the rotary pressers. At other adjacent areas, not depressed by such raised or ribbed portions, the blanks do not pick up glue, even though passing across it in actual or substantial but non-pressing contact. If desired, associated means may be .provided for supporting or holding up projecting portions of the blank which are not to be glued, but such means have been found to be unnecessary in the great majority of cases.
It will also be understood that the timing of the glue wheels 23 and the cooperating rotary presser elements 10 is so related to that of the blank feeding or conveyor mechanism and other parts of the machine as a whole that the blanks are presented to the gluing mechanism successively and at such intervals that the areas to be glued will accurately match and be pressed upon by the raised formations of the rotary pressers.
As previously mentioned, the present invention includes means for evenly distributing and accurately regulating the film of glue carried up bya glue wheel for presentation to the blanks. Such means herein comprises, for each glue-wheel 23, a. glue-film adjusting or wiper roll 80, one of which is seen in Figs. and 7 and in further detail in Figs. 10 to 14. A description of one such roll and associated parts will be sufliclent.
Referring to said figures, the roll 80 is of tubular or sleeve-like form and is concentrically supported for rotation on a spindle 8|, herein on ball bearings 82, 83.
At one of its ends this film-adjusting roll has an annular flange 84 adapted to overlap and to have friction driven engagement with the adjacent end face of the corresponding glue wheel 23 and serving also as a glue scraper for that face of the glue wheel. The roll is held with its flange 84 in the described driving engagement with its glue wheel, as by means of an adjustable coil spring 85 pressing against it and having a seat 86 in an arm 90 which supports the adjacent end of the roll spindle 8|.
As best seen in Fig. 12, said supporting arm 99 is longitudinally slotted inwardly from one end to provide upper and lower members 9|, 92. The spring seat 86 and surrounding boss 93 within which the adjacent end of the spindle 8|. is supported are formed on the upper member 9|. The
wheel and with the film-carrying surface of the latter. This relativeposition f the two parts of the arm 90 is readily adjusted as by means of a jack screw 95 threaded through the upper member 9| and engageable with the lower member 92. Associated withthe jack screw 95 isa locking screw 95 extending downwardly through the upper member 9| and tapped into the lower member 92. On loosening this locking screw 95, the jack screw 95 may be turned to adjust its extent of projection below the top member 9|, thereby to raise or lower this end of the axis of the spindle 8|. l I
An additional axial adjustment for the spindle BI and hence for its roll 80, as best seen in Figs. and 14 is provided by means of an eccentrically apertured collar 98 on the end of the spindle and rotatably adjustable in the boss 93 of the supporting arm 90. Said eccentric collar 98 extends outwardly beyond the arm 90 and is squared or provided with recesses 99 about its circumference,
for engagement by a wrench. It will be apparent that by turning this eccentric collar the axis of the spindle 8| will be shifted relative to the supporting arm 90, both horizontally and vertically. By the combination of these two adjustments, that afforded by the eccentric and that obtained by manipulation of the jack screw 95, the axial position of the spindle and roll 80 may be shifted positively and by very fineincrements, so as to bring it into true alignment with the axis of the associated glue-wheel 23.
The other end. of the wiper roll spindle 8I is supported by an arm I 00 having a hub IOI receiving a reduced end portion of the spindle. The ball bearing 82 for this end of the wiper roll has its inner race mounted on said reduced portion of the spindle and its outer race set in an enlarged end recess I02 in the roll proper. At the inner end of this recess is a shoulder I03 adapted to abut said outer race of the ball bearing 82. The inner face of the supporting arm I 00 is recessed about the spindle-supporting boss IOI, to receive said recessed end of the roll 80. The overall length of the latter is so proportioned to the width of the glue-wheel that this end of the roll, opposite the driving flange 84, is always spaced somewhat from said supporting arm I00. Hence the spring 85 may press the roll flange 84 at all times into proper driving engagement with the glue-wheel, irrespective of possible wear between these parts.
It will be noted that the spindle-carrying end of the arm I00 is comparatively thin, allowing the wiper roll and glue wheel to stand close to the adjacent wall of the glue pot, and hence to engage portions of the blanks substantially fully I across to or adjacent to the outer edges of the conveyor belts ,3. This arm I00 also serves as a scraper for the adjacent end face of the glue wheel.
The described supporting arms 90 and I00 for the two ends of the wiper roll are each fixed, in the proper spaced relation, on a normally stationary but adjustable shaft I05, as by means of locking pins I06 and I0! respectively. By turning this shaft in one or the opposite direction these roll-supporting arms together with the entire wiper roll assembly carried by them may be shifted vertically, moving the wiper roll toward or from the glue-wheeL. The thickness of the glue film may thus be set with great accuracy, for example at .005 of an inch, or at whatever thickness may be desired for a particular job.

As previously noted, the glue pots desirably are made from asingle pattern or mold, rather than as rights and lefts, and are mounted in reversed position at the two sides of the machine. The construction according. is such that the brackets H0 and wiper-roll assemblies may be received at either end wall of the glue pots, depending on which is in foremost position on the machine.
Each such bracket I I 0 has bearing portions I I2 for the corresponding shaft I05, and an intermediate portion which is recessed as at I I3, Fig. 10. The portion of the shaft I05 underlying this recess is cut away as at Ill; see particularly Fig. 13. An adjusting plate I I5 projecting transverse- IV of the shaft is set fiatwise in this recessed portion II4 of the shaft and secured to the latter as by screws II5; see also Fig. 10. Vertically opposite this plate I I5 on the shaft is a cooperating jack plate II8 anchored on the bracket I I0, as by bolts or screws II9. This jack plate II8 carries a pair of jack screws I20, I2I, at opposite sides of the axis of the shaft I05 and adapted to engage the upper face of the plate II5 fixed on the shaft. Thus by backing off one of these jack screws and turning down the other the angular position of the shaft I05 in its supporting bracket may be varied in one or the opposite direction thereby bodily to raise or lower the two supporting arms 90 and I00 in unison and. with them the entire wiper-roll assembly, accurately to adjust the spacing between the wiper roll 00 and its glue wheel 23.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the invention includes among other features the method and means whereby positively driven and hence accurately controllable rotary presser devices cooperate directly with a blank between them and a glue wheel, so that the glue may be applied by the supply-receiving glue wheel itself, directly to the blank, at such predetermined areas as may be desired, whether continuous or otherwise. Additionally, the uniformity and selected thickness of the glue film so applied is insured under the accurate, adjustable control of the operatively associated wiper mechanism, the latter comprising a rotary element set to afford the desired glue film on the delivering portion of the wheel. Such rotary wiper or film-control element has various advantages over a non-rotary Since my rotary device presents a continuously shifting surface to the glue wheel, it avoids concentrated wear of either element. Furthenit allows the passage of foreign matter such as glue-chips, filings or the like which accumulate under a stationary blade and tend to score the glue wheel and otherwise interfere with the efficient operation of the gluing unit as a whole.
It will be understood that my invention, either as to means or method, is not limited to the exemplary embodiment or steps herein illustrated or described, and I set forth its scope in my following claims.
Iclaim:
1. In gluing mechanism for paper blank han-' dling apparatus, in combination, a glue pot adapted for mounting on the apparatus in position for passage of the blanks across it, a glue wheel rotatable in the pot'so as to present a film of glue directly to aportion of a blank crossing it, a film-control roll rotatable at the blankapproaching side of the glue wheel, a flange on the said roll having driven engagement with a side face of the glue wheel, a carrier shaft on the glue pot, lateral arms fixed on said shaft, a spindle carried by and extending between said arms, said film-control roll being tubular and rotatably mounted on the spindle, means to adjust the carrier shaft angularly about its axis thereby to shift the roll toward or from the glue wheel to regulate the glue film, and means associated with the arm at one end of the spindle for adjusting the spindle and roll axis transversely, to bring the roll and glue wheel surfaces into accurate parallelism.
2. A rotary presser element for gluing mechanism comprising a carrier cylinder, a circumferential presser segment externally receivable on the cylinder to provide the active pressing area thereof, and means for removably securing said presser segment on the cylinder including a peripheral flange providing an undercut retaining abutment formation at one end of the cylinder and a concentric clamping ring at its other end, said presser segment having an end formed for reception in said undercut retaining formation and adapted to be held therein by the clamping ring.

Glue-applying mechanism for paper blanks and the like comprising, in combination, a container for glue, a glue wheel revoluble through the glue supply, a glue-film adjusting roll rotatably supported with its periphery in proximity to that of the wheel so as to pass between them a film of glue of the desired thickness, an annular member at one end portion of the roll having overlapping relation with the adjacent side face of the wheel, means providing a clearance space 40 nular member in friction driven relation with portion including integral bottom, opposite end 45 and one side walls, a cover plate detachably secured to said main portion to provide the opposide side wall therefor, a bearing boss on said integral side wall and spaced equally from the opposite end walls, a glue wheel rotatably supported in the pot on a shaft journaled in and extending outwardly through said boss, and longitudinally projecting supporting formations at the outer faces ofthe end walls for detachably and adjustably mounting the glue pot on the apparatus in operative position with either end foremost.
5. Gluing mechanism comprising, in combination, a glue pot, a wheel rotatably supported to dip into a glue supply in the pot, a shaft above and paralleling the axis of said glue wheel, a carrier drum adjustably fixed on the shaft, raised surface means on the drum for depressing into glue-receiving contact with the wheel underlying portions of the sheet material to be glued, means rotatably supporting the shaft and drum with capacity for vertical movement as a unit, an adjustable stop device associated with said means variably to limit the down movement of said unit thereby to afford a regulated clearance for the sheet to be glued, spring means urging said unit toward the glue wheel to afford a yieldable pressing contact of the raised surface means upon the material passing between it and the glue wheel, and means for regulating the tension of said spring means thereby to adjust the pressure of supporting arm for each end of the-spindle,
meanson the glue pot supportingsaid arms for a vertical adjustment in unison, the supporting arm at one end of the spindle having oppositely disposed parts relatively movable transversely of the spindle axis,- an eccentric adjusting collar on the end of the spindle adjacent said plural-part supporting arm, said collar being rotatably mounted in one of said relatively movable parts of said supporting arm, whereby the spindle axis may be transversely adjusted with respect to the glue wheel and to said supporting arm, and a means to vary the spacing of said movable parts of said arm further to adjust the spindle axis in cooperation with said eccentric collar.
7. In gluing mechanism for paper-blank handling apparatus, in combination, a glue pot adapted for mounting on the apparatus in position for passage of the blanks across it, a glue wheel rotatable in the pot so as to present a film of glue directly to an under portion of a blank crossing it, a film-control roll rotatable at the. blank-approaching side of the glue wheel, drive connections between the glue wheel and said roll, said connections'constructed and arranged for effective operation under different relative spacings of the wheel and roll axes, a roll carrier element including a longitudinal member having projecting arms spaced to support rotatably the respective ends of the roll, bracket means on the glue pot adjustably supporting said carrier element to shift the roll bodily in parallelism with itself toward or from the glue wheel, and means on one of the roll-supporting arms for transversely adjusting the roll axis with respect to the arm to set the roll surface in the desired alignment relative to the glue wheel surface.
8. In gluing mechanism for paper-blank handling apparatus, in combination, a glue pot adapted for mounting on the apparatus in position for passage of the blanks across it, a glue wheel rotatable in the pot so as to present a fihn of glue directly to an under portion of a blank crossing it, a film-control roll rotatable at the blank-approaching side of the glue wheel, drive connections between the glue wheel and said roll, said connections constructed and arranged for effective operation under different relative spacings of the wheel and roll axes, a roll carrier element including a longitudinal member having projecting arms spaced to support rotatably the respective ends of the roll, bracket means on the glue pot adjustably supporting said carrier element to shift the roll bodily in parallelism with itself toward or from the glue wheel, and plural means associated with one roll-supporting arm and operative in any given adjusted position of the carrier element as a whole for angularly adjusting the roll axis transversely.
9. In gluing mechanism for paper-blank handling apparatus, in combination, a glue pot adapted for mounting on the apparatus in position for passage of the blanks across it, a glue wheel rotatable in the pot so as to present a film of glue directly to an under portion of a blank crossing it, a film-control roll rotatable at the blank-approaching side of the glue wheel, drive connections between the glue wheel and said roll, said connections constructed and arranged for effective operation under different relative spacings of the wheel and roll axes, a roll carrier element including a longitudinal member having projecting arms spaced to support rotatably the respective ends of the roll, and bracket means on the glue pot adjustably supporting said carrier element to shift the roll bodily in parallelism with itself toward or from the glue wheel, the supporting arm at one end of the roll including eccentric means for adjusting the angular relation of the roll and glue wheel axes independently of the arm.
10. Gluing mechanism for paper-blank handling apparatus comprising, in combination? a frame, conveyor means thereon to advance the blanks along a path, saidmeans engaging beneath intermediate portions of the blanks to provide under support therefor between opposite laterally projecting gluing portions thereof, glue pots mounted on the frame below the path of said gluing portions, one at each side of said conveyor means, a glue applicator wheel rotatable in each pot directly under the corresponding laterally projecting gluing portion of the blanks and engageable therewith only at their under face, and a rotary presser device above each glue wheel and having a presser formation disposed along a cylindrical surface the axis of which parallels that of the corresponding glue wheel, said presser formation for each glue wheel having a shape and extent, in planular development, selected to register with predetermined gluing areas at the under face of the corresponding laterally projecting blank portion, said rotary presser devices adapted to engage and press upon the top faces of said projecting blank portions thereby to depress said predetermined gluing areas while the intermediate sections of the blanks between their laterally projecting portions are supported by the conveyor'means, whereby to force only said predetermined gluing areas of the under faces of said projecting portions into glue-receiving relation directly with the corresponding underlying glue applicator wheel.
11. Gluing mechanism for sheet material comprising, in combination, a glue pot, a glue wheel rotatably supported to dip into a glue supply in the pot, a shaft above and paralleling the axis of the glue wheel, a carrier drum adjustably fixed on the shaft, raised surface means on the drum for engaging the upper non-gluing face of the sheet material passing between the carrier drumand the glue wheel to depress selected portions of -the material to cause corresponding areas at the underside only thereof to make glue-receiving contact withthe glue wheel, associated feeding means presenting the material below and in timed registry with the raised surface means of the carrier drum, means rotatably supporting the carrier shaft and drum with capacity for vertical movement as a unit, an adjustable stop device variably to limit the down movement of said unit to afford a regulated clearance for the material to be glued and-positively to hold said unit from contact with the glue wheel in the absence of said material, and spring means urging said unit toward the glue wheel or yieldable pressing contact of the raised sur ace means of the drum upon the material passing between it and the glue wheel thereby to effect said selective underface glue application and simultaneously to afford a feeding action to the material.
12. In gluing mechanism for paper-blank handling apparatus, in combination, a glue pot adapted for mounting on the apparatus in position for passage of the blanks across it, a glue wheel rotatable in the pot so as to present a film of glue directly to an under portion of a blank crossing it, and a cooperable rotary presser element above the glue wheel and adapted to receive portions of the blanks between it and the wheel and to assist in advancing the blanks across the wheel, said rotary presser element comprising a shaft rotatably supported on the apparatus with capacity for bodily yielding movement away from the glue wheel, means normally urging the shaft toward the glue wheel, stop means limiting the approach of the shaft toward the wheel to hold the rotary presser element from contact with the glue of the wheel in the absence of a blank, a carrier cylinder on said shaft, a circumferential presser segment receivable on the cylinder, and readily releasable clamping means associated with the cylinder ends for demountably securing the presser segment upon the cylinder.
13. Gluing mechanism comprising, in combination, a glue pot, a wheel rotatably supported to dip into a glue supply in the pot, a shaft above and paralleling the axis of said glue wheel, a carrier drum adjustably fixed on the shaft, selectively patterned raised surface means on the drum for depressing into glue-receiving contact with the wheel only the underface of corresponding predetermined underlying portions of the sheet material to be glued, means rotatably supporting the shaft and drum with capacity for vertical movement as a unit, spring means yieldably urging said shaft and drum unit downwardly toward the glue wheel for said depressing action by said raised surface means of the drum, and automatic stop means limiting said down movement of the shaft and drum unit determinedly to space said raised surface means of the drum from the glue wheel proportionately to the thickness of the particular sheet material to be glued and adequately to avoid reception of glue on said surface means in the absence of a blank between it and the glue wheel.
