This invention. relates to electric razors and. more particularly to electric razors in which a razor blade is oscillated over teeth disposed at an angle to the edge of the blade, the blade being in contact with the surface being shaved.
Heret-ofore it has been proposed to use a razor blade in electric razors and to oscillate it to cut the hairs on the surface being shaved and also to use teeth over which the blade will oscillate, these teeth being arranged at right angles to the edge of the blade. To make this type of electric razor effective to cut the hair the blade must be oscillated at great frequencies and with large amplitudes. Such a razor not only cuts the hair but also the skin adjacent the base of the hair. When the frequency of oscillation is reduced and the amplitude of oscillation diminished to avoid cutting the sk'm the blade will not cut the hair but will merely push it aside or bend it over. I have found that these difficulties may be avoided and that an electric razor may be had that will effectively clip the hair close to the surface of the skin without cutting the skin when oscillated at lower frequencies and less amplitudes than heretofore used if the teeth be disposed at an appropriate angle to the edge of the blade and if the blade be oscillated over these teeth in a direction at right angles to the edge of the blade, the teeth acting to support the hair clipped and prevent it from being pushed aside or bent over.
t is accordingly an object of my invention to provide a novel electric razor in which a blade is oscillated over teeth to effectively clip the hair on the skin being shaved without cutting the skin.
Another object of my invention 'is to provide a novel electric razor which will effectively clip the hair on the surface being shaved by the oscillation of a razor blade over teeth disposed at an angle to the edge of the blade.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel electric razor in which a razor blade is oscillated at relatively low frequencies with a relatively small amplitude of oscillation over teeth disposed at an angle to the edge of the blade.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel electric razor in which a razor blade is oscillated at right angles to its cutting edge over teeth disposed at an angle to its edge, the blade being adjacent the surface of the skin being shaved when the razor is in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel electric razor in which any of the razor blades now on the market may be used.
Another object of my invention is. to provide a novel electric razor which is cheap to manufacbase plug I I through any flexible conductor such ture, simple in construction, durable and in which -the razor blade may be easily changed when dulled.
With these objects in view the accompanying drawing illustrates one embodiment of my novel electric razor but it should be expressly understood that this drawing shows an illustrative embodiment only and should not be construed as a limitation of the present invention, reference being had to the appended claims to determine the scope of the present invention.

In these figures in which like reference characters denote similar parts It) is any suitable housing for an electric motor, not shown, of any standard type, housing l0 forming the handle of the razor. The electric motor is supplied with electricity from any suitable source such as the as wire [2. Suitably secured to housing Ill is shank member l3 threaded at M and centrally bored at I5 to receive the extension iii of the shaft of the electric motor. Shaft extension I6 is provided with an eccentric l1. Formed on shank I3 adjacent the inner end of threaded portion I4 is circumferential shoulder 18. Centrally bored and internally threaded at IQ for engagement with threaded portion M of shank I3 is guide and support member 20. Guide and sup: port member 20 has shoulders2l arranged parallel along its sides to guide the blade carrier 22 and is provided with any suitable number of teeth 23 suitably spaced apart arranged at approximately a angle with its long edge 24.
Blade carrier 22 is provided on its under surface with a. slot 25 extending parallel to its edge 26 adapted to receive the eccentric ll of shaft l6 and has secured to its upper surface suitable studs 21 adapted to pass through the perforations of any standard razor blade 28 to hold blade 28 from edgewise movement. Adapted for I cooperation with blade carrier 22 is clamp member 29 slightly arcuatein form and secured to carrier 22 by bolts 30 and provided with holes 3| through which studs 21 may pass, clamp member 28 acting to firmly hold blade 28 in place on blade carrier 22. Clamp member 28 overlaps the edge 28 of carrier 22 and being arcuate in form when tightly secured to carrier 22 acts to bend the cutting edge of blade 28 downward over the edge 26 of carrier 22 and into engagement with teeth 23 when the razor is assembled. Carrier 22,'blade 28 and clamp 28 are held against support member inside shoulders 2| by spring member 32 which is provided with a suitable hole 33 through which the threaded portion H of shank l3 -may' pass, spring member 32 being clampedbetwen shoulder I8 and the underside of support member 20 and being additionally secured to support member 20 by bolts 33'. Spring member 32 has an upwardly extending and overa lapping spring arm 34 designed to slidably engage the upper surface of clamp 29. Arm '34 is arranged at a suitable angle with blade 28 so when arm 34 engages the surface to be shaved blade 28 is at the proper cutting angle with the surface to be shaved. Engaging blade carrier 22 to assistspring member 32 in holding blade carrier 22 against support member 28 are guide members 35 suitably secured to support member 20 by bolts 38.-
With the above described embodiment of my present invention assembled as in Fig. 1 when it is desired to use my novel razor the electricity to the motor is turned on and the motor then rotates shaft 5 and eccentric l1. Eccentric l1 sliding in groove of blade carrier 22 oscillates blade carrier 22 between shoulders 2| of carrier 28 and oscillates the cutting edge of blade 28 over teeth 23 in a direction at right angles to the cutting edge of the blade 28. The razor is then applied to the surface to be shaved with arm 34 and blade 28 in contact therewith. The razor is moved in the same manner as any other safety razor. Movement of the razor causes the hairs to enter the teeth 23 and as blade 28 moves over teeth 23 the hair is severed close to the surface being shaved, the teeth 23 acting to support the hair from behind and prevent it from being pushed out of the way or bent over by the blade 28.
It will now be apparent that the present invention provides a novel electric razor which effectively clips the hair on the skin being shaved without cutting the skin by oscillation of the razor blade over teeth disposed at an appropriate angle to the cutting edge of the blade, the oscillation of the blade being at right angles to its cutting edge and being of relatively low frequency and small amplitude, the razor being durable, simple, cheap to manufacture and readily demountable for replacement of the blade.
To those skilled in the art changes to or modifications of the abovedescribed illustrative embodiment of the present invention'may now be suggested without departing from the inventive concept and reference should therefore be had to the appended claims to determine the scope of the present invention.
What is claimed is: I
1. In arazor of the class described including a handle and a base member carried by said handle, a razor blade slidably mounted on said base member, a plurality of teeth formed on one edge of said base member at an acute angle to the cutting edge of said blade and means for oscillating said blade over said teeth in a direction at right angles to the cutting edge of said blade.
