HIRAM R. AGKLEY, OF EAST HAMILTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,979, dated December 30, 1879; application filed June 6, 1877 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM: R. ACKLEY, of East Hamilton, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in an adj ust-able colter for hill-side plows, and will be hereinafter fully explained.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a hillside plow having my improvements attached, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views.
A is the beam, and B the share, hinged together and operated in ordinary manner.
Through the beam there is made the vertical slot a over the point b of the share. This slot is made bell-shaped, or with a wide-open mouth at its lower end, and it gradually narrows upward till, at the top of the beam, it is just wide enough to permit the colter to be easily put through it. The width of the slot at its lower end permits the lateral adjustment of the point of the colter. The slot is also made long enough to permit a longitudinal movement of the point of the colter, for purposes hereinafter set forth.
c is the colter, of ordinary form and arrangement with reference to the point b. It is supported and swings or turns freely on a pin, e, in the slot a, so that it may be moved forward and back and laterally, to adapt it to the reversed position of the share, and its upper end, e', is extended above the beam far enough to provide a handle, o', within ready reach of the plowman.
In the lower part of the slot ct there is fixed a short retaining-pin, f, which projects forward from the center 0f the rear end, and is so arran ged that the colter may bc placed and held on either side of it, as desired. The colter is pushed forward till it can be moved laterally' past the point and drop back on the opposite side of the pin. The pressure of lthe earth keeps the colter in its place as firmly as though it were immovably bolted to the beam.
I am aware that colters for hill-side plows have been constructed so that they could be adjusted laterally to adapt them to the reversed position of the share, and I do not claim, broadly, such a device.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, with the reversible share B and the beam A, constructed with the slot a, made wide at lts lower end and provided with the pnf, fixed centrally in its rear end, of the adjustable coltcr c, supported on the pin e in the slot a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HlRAM It. AOKLEY.
Witnesses: N. BRowNELL,
EDWIN R. ACKLEY.
