UNITED STATESAPATENT OFFIoE.
JOHN DECKER, OF OGDENSBURG, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO WALTER S. BURNHAM, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN BURGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,873, dated December 23, 1879; application filed September 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jo1-IN DECKER, of Ogdensburg, in the county of Sussex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and 1111- proved Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is aspecification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the det'ice. Fig. 2 is a partly sectional side elevation of a portion of thedevice, showing the arrangement for detaching the cord from the match-carrier.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to that class of devices that give an alarm when any one attempts to force adoor or window to which the device is connected, while at the same time the device operates to light a match, and with the match to light a lamp.
The invention consist of a sliding matchcarrier and a weight so arranged and connect ed with a door or window that when said door or window is opened the weight falls and gives a sufficient alarm, and at the same time causes a match to be lighted on afriotion-surface and to be moved to and light a lamp, and the device may be connected to one or more windows or doors.
In the drawings, A represents the base of the device, and B B the horizontal rods. Each rod B has one end inserted in the standard 0, and the other end bent downward and inserted in the base A. D is the match-carrier that is loosely secured on one of the rods B, and reaches across and rests on the other rod B. This carrier D is provided with a match-socket, a, and a hole, 12, in its turned-up end, to assist in holding the inserted match 0. E is the vertical sand-paper or friction-plate supported by the elastic supports m on the base A. F is the lamp set in a frame or holder, G. The cord'H has one end knotted and inserted in the slotted hole cl of the carrier D, and is extended through the slot f of the standard 0, and has its other end secured to the block or weight I. To the top of the block or Weight I, or to any other convenient part of it, is attached the cord K, that is connected with a door or window. This cord. K is kept taut, so that when the door or window to which it is fastened is moved to be opened the block I is pulled from the table or stand, (represented by L in the drawings,)a1'1d falls upon the floor with sufficient noise to awaken any one in the room with it, and in falling this block or weight I pulls the cord H, sot-hat it (the cord H) quickly draws the carrier D, with the match c, to the lamp F, the match a taking fire in its passage by contact with the elastic frictionplate E. Reaching the lamp F the match 0 lights it, and simultaneously the catch g of the standard 0 engages and holds the carrier D, while the finger h of the standard O operates to push the knotted end of the cord H out of the slotted hole at of the carrier D, so as to release the said cord H, and the block or weight I.
I do not broadly claim a burglar-alarm that gives an alarm and lights a lamp when operated, for I am aware that devices of that kind have been made.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the standard 0, of
the catch g, for holding the carrier D,'and of the finger It, for detaching the cord H from the carrier D, substantially as herein shown and described.
