UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 lClaims.
This invention relates to vaporizers and more particularly to those used in generating heated vapors for inhalation, and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this type having improved features of construction contributing to increased safety in operation and satisfaction in use.
This and other objects which will be apparent to those skilled in the art are accomplished by 10 the present invention one embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying -drawing in which,

20 The particular embodiment of the invention which has been chosen for illustration comprises a body member 5 having a recess 6 for receiving a cup 'l of heat transferring material, preferably aluminum, the flaring end 8 of which is secured 25 to a shoulder 9 formed in the recess 6. The joint between the container and the shoulder 9 is sealed so that no liquid o1'- vapor can enter the space between the wall of the cup 'I and the wall of the recess 6. The recess extends upwardly 30 above the cup within a wall I0.
A nozzle member II in the form of a cap threaded or otherwise secured to the body member encloses the recess and the diameter of the wall I2 of the cap is such as to provide a space I3 35l between the cap and the recess wall. I0. The nozzle has the usual nozzle-shaped opening I4 through which vapor is inhaled by the user. A tubular extension I5 is formed within the nozzle g member and extends to a point slightly below the '40 top of the wall I0 of the body member thus forming an annular recess It, preferably of greater i capacity than the cup 1, into which fluid from the cup 'I will flow if the vaporizer is tipped bel yond the horizontal and the danger of boiling 45 fluid running out of the nozzle I4 avoided.
The wall I2 of the nozzle member has one or more air openings II positioned at a level below the top edge of the wall I so that air drawn therethrough is compelled to follow a crcuitous 50' path over the top of the wall I0 downwardly into i lthe recess where it picks up the heated vapor and then passes outwardly through the nozzle I4. l' An electrical heating element I8 is located in the recess 6 between the wall of the cup 'I and (Cl. 12S- 192) the wall of the recess. The heater leads extend through the bottom of the body member to terminals i9 which are housed within a base cap 2l! threaded to the body member.
The complete device includes the usual plug 2| and switch 22.
In use, the nozzle cap is removed and the fluid-heating cup I lled with whatever liquid it is desired to use. The cup is preferably formed so as to hold approximately 2 c. c. of liquid. The 10 cap is then replaced and curr-ent supplied to the heater element which results in quickly Vaporizing the uid in the container. Upon inhaling, air is drawn through the air opening I'I as above described. If the device is tilted beyond the hori- 15 zontal, the user is protected against the highly heated liquid flowing out of the nozzle opening I4 by the liquid receiving pocket I6 which is formed between the Wall of the cap and the inwardly-extending tubular projection I5. The liquid will flow into this pocket and the user is thus protected against dangerous burns. Except for the vaporizing cup 'I, the material employed is a non-conductor of heat so that the device can be safely and satisfactorily used.
It will be apparent that the invention can be variously modified and adapted within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A vaporizer comprising a recessed body member, a cup, means for securing said cup in said recess so as to form a closed space between the Wall of said recess and said cup, a heating ele- I ment in said space, a nozzle member having an outer wall surrounding and spaced from the wall of said recess with air inlet openings communieating with said space, and an inner tubular extension located opposite said recess and forming a pocket for accommodating fluid spilt from said cup.
2. A vaporizer comprising a recessed body member, a anged cup located in said recess with the flange engaging the wall thereof to forma closed space between said wall and said cup, a heating element in said space, a nozzle member having an outer wall surrounding and spaced from the wall of said recess with air inlet openings in said outer Wall communicating with said space, and an inner tubular extension surrounding the nozzle outlet, located opposite and eX- tending into said recess and forming a pocket for accommodating fluid spilt from said cup.
