IMPROVEMENT lN TEMPORARY BINDERS FOR BOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,757, dated December 16, 1879; application filed October 23, 1879.

To all whom it may concernr Be it known that I, JAMES P. W. VON LAER, of Washington, in the county of 'Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of thedrawings is a representation of the interior of my temporary binder. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 8 is a sectional detail view, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the back.

My invention relates to an improvement in temporary binders for periodicals, pamplilets, music, and the like; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangel'nent of parts, as will be'fully described in the following specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my invention I employ a back having substantially a convex back portion and a plain front. Extending forward upon each side are longitudinal flanges, which form, in connection with the back, shoulders, against which abut the inner edges of the covers. The covers are secured tothe back by means of the binding material, and in some instances laces may also be employed for such purpose, the hinge or joint being at the shoulder, as shown.

The longitudinal flanges are cut away or terminate at a sufficient distance from the ends of the back to admit of the devices for holding and locking, the slats being secured in proper position for such purpose.

The slats are flat, and provided with recesses or notches to receive the upper edge of a transverse bar or flange in the locking device at one end of the back, as shown. To compensate for differences in the thickness of different pamphlets, or the like, these holdingslats are loosely pivoted upon arod or bar, and between the slats upon said bar I propose arranging springs, which prevent the slats from having too mnchlateral play. These springs may, however, be dispensed with.

The bar or flange at the free endof the slats is provided with recesses, and the slats, being dropped into the said recesses, will maintain an approximately parallel position with the plane of the closed covers and the longitudinal flanges.

The lockingdevice, at one end of the back, is provided with a hinged or pivoted latch, which is adapted to secure the holding-slats in place, and this latch may be arranged so as to constitute a spring-latch, so that it will remain locked until intentionally freed or unlatched. U

Referrin g to the drawings, A designates the back proper, formed with a convex back portion. a, and a plain front, a. B designates the longitudinal flanges, and b the shoulders, against which shoulders abut the inner edges of the covers 0, the binding or covering material thus passing over a rounded corner, thus preventing the covers from being pushed back and the binding material coming away from the back, the hinge or joint formed between the covers and the back being at this point. The longitudinal flanges B are not quite so long as the backA, so that a sufficient space will be left at one end for the support to which the slats are pivoted, and a space at the other end for the lock, which maintains the free ends of the slats in place after the pamphlets, &c., have been placed upon the same.

As herein shown, the rod or bar D, upon which the slats c are pivoted, is secured be tween the ears or lugs d of a plate, d, which is secured to back A. at one of its ends.

The locking device consists of a bar or fiange, f, upon which the free ends of the slats are held by a pivoted latch, g.

As shown, a plate, h, is secured to the back A in any suitable way, and this plate is provided with the bar or flange f, upon which the slats rest when in position to be locked down, and it is also provided with lugs g, upon one of which the latch is pivoted, the remaining lug being provided with a pin or spring catch for engagement with the latch. It is obvious that the latch may be hinged to one lag, and be made so as to engage by springconnection with the remaining lug without departing from my invention.

The upper portion of the bar or flange f is formed with recesses i, into which the ends of the slats drop, the object of said recesses being to prevent too great a lateral play or movement of the slats; and I may employ two or more of these recesses, according to the size of the hinder, or I may omit them entirely. I propose, also, notching the slats, as at 70, the

said notches fitting upon the bar or flange f.

In forming the back and flanges of my binder I do not confine myself to any particular material, since it is obvious that a variety of substances or materials may be employed.

What I claim, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a temporary binder, the combination of the bar D, the pivoted slats 0, provided with notches iv, and separated at their pivoted ends by springs, the bar or flange f, having recesses 13, and the latch g, with the back A, substantially as set forth.

2. In a temporary binder, the slats a, provided with notches 7c, in combination with the flange f, secured to or formed upon the back of the binder, substantially as and for the purposes set, forth.

3. In a temporary binder, the slats c, pivoted to abar at one end of the back of the same, and provided with notches k, in combination with the flange f at the other end, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
