Patented 31, 1940 UNITED; 4sm'rlazs PATENT I OFFICE F FILM REEL v Charles Edward McAuley, Unionville, N. Y. Application September 14, 1939, Serial No. 291,841
' the iilm to be wound upon the reel and to do this Without complicated clamping mechanisms, perforation engaging means or bending the end of the film by inserting it into a slot or slots in the i core of the reel. t 1
It is, therefore, among the objects of the pres-A ent invention to provide a reel of the character above described having side flanges and a core v in which reel it will be readily possible to engage the end of the film at the core without the necessity of clamps, perforation engaging means or special constructions Without damaging or marring the end of the lm.
In accomplishing this object, it has been found undesirable to provide resilient clamping means as these have a tendency to'weaken the lm and also -decrease its life and it is among the objects of the present invention to provide an improved clamping arrangement of the character described inwhich the end of the iilm will be engaged without resultant clamping by an effective, yet inexpensive device readily assembled with the types of reels now in use, which may be readily manipulated by the user.
Still further objectsand advantages will appear from the more detailed description set forth below it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by wayof illustration since various changes therein may bel made by those skilled in the art without departting from the scope and spirit of the invention. In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found most desirable to form the reeland side plates of stamped sheet metal with a core attached to said side plates and having suitable engagements'with said side plates by teeth extending out from the core and projecting through openings in said side plates.l
Between the cores and the side plates are nonresilient engaging means preferably having the form of plates which may be provided with bosses or enlargements adjacent and outside of the juncture of the core and the' side plates.
These embossments may be relatively short and extend into recesses in the edge of the core or they may be'relatively wide and extend part `of or the entire periphery of the core.
, Referring uo the drawings which illustrate several of the various possible embodiments of the presentv invention, but to which the present v invention is by no means restricted since the drawings are merely by Way of illustration and not by way of limitation.
Figure 1 is a top view of one form of reel according to the present invention showing the side plates, core and added winder'plates on edge;
Figure 2 is aside elevational view of the reel Vof Figure l;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figures 4 and 5 are respectively fragmentary transverse sectional viewson the line 4-4 and 5 5 of Figure 3 upon an enlarged scale as compared with Figure 3. I
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the core before assembly with the side plates upon an en y larged scale as compared to Figure 3;
Figure 7 is a plan view of a plate construction; ,A f*
Figure 8 is anelevational Figures 9 and 10 are fragmentary cross sectional views on the lines 9-.9 and Ill-III upon enlarged scale as compared to Figure 8;
Figure -11 is a perspective view of a core and ofthe reel of Figures 8 to 10 before attachment to the side plates.
Figure 12 is a plan view of the plate of Figures l plan view'of the plate construction of Figure 13?- and/Figure 15 being a sectional view on the line I 5-I5 of Figure 14.
Referring to the embodiment of Figures 1 to 'L the reel is provided with side plates A, the core B and the intermediate wind plate C. f
As shown in Figure 2, each of the plates is provided With the circular edge I0, the cut-outs' Il, I2, I3, I4 and |51- l f..
The cut-outs are .preferably so arranged as to permit inspection of the film without unduly decreasing the amount of said surface available to hold the nlm in position .between the side plates A. l v
The opening I3 maybe provided with the gradd r'View of the side of an alternative reel construction; -1
The center opening I5 is designed to t upon a spindle and is provided with outstandingk extensions I8.
It win be noted that one of the flanges Alismarked as Front at I9 since this is the'side which is to be on the outside of the spindle.
The other side is provided with a similar square opening having the extensions 2| at 90 to the extensions I8. It will be noted that the openings l5 I3 and I4 extend inwardly toward the center ofl the reel at 22 inside of the core B."
As shown, the core B in Figure 6 is formed of a rounded piece of sheet metal 23, the ends of which are brought together to form a slot at 24.
20 The side edges 25 abut the inside faces of the plates A and the extensions 26 are designed to iit into'the openings 21 `in the sides of the reel to form a iirm attachment on the sides of the reel and side core B. The extensions may be turned over or riveted as shown at 21a to secure a tight connection.
Between thecore B and the side plates A are positioned the plates C having the outstanding portions or ears 28 and having the recessed por- 30 tions 29 corresponding t'o the portions 22 of the recesses I3 and I4.
The center opening 3Il4 is sumciently large to extend outside of the openings'l 5 and 20 and their extensions I8 and 2I in the side plates A.
The slots 3I correspond to the slots 21 and receive the projections 28 of the core B.
The embossments 32 are positioned at the ends of each slot 3I and they extend down inside of the core and fit into the recess 33 at the edge of the core as best shown in Figure 4.
It is readily apparent the reel may be readily assembled and in operation the edge of the iilm may be caught by the pairs of embossments 32.
The plates A and the core B are made of relatively thick sheet aluminum or steel or other alloys which are self sustaining or-non-resilient while the core plates C are made up of thin nonresilient sheet metal which readily bends and is quite soft and catches" the iilm without resilient 5o action.
In theembodiment of Figures 8 to 12 (similarly functioning parts being indicated by the same numerals and letters as indicated in theembodiment of Figures l to 7, however primed), theside plates A are of the same construction as-the plates Ar of Figures 1 to 7 and the core is also of the same construction as the core of Figure 6 except that the recesses 33 have been eliminated.
In the core plate the embossments, instead of 60 being placed at the side of the slot, are placed as indicated at 32' extending ventirelyvoutside of theA IIhe inner edges III of the embossments 32 will rest upon the outside face of the core, as indicated 55 best in Figure-I0 and will be cut away to form an edge at 4I over the slots 3| (see particularly Figures 49 and 10).
In the embodiment of Figures 13 to 15 (similarly functioning parts being indicated by the same numerals provided with a superior 2"), the engagement means is formed by providing two parallel ridges 323 in the plates to be inserted between the core B2 and the side plates A2.
In all cases, theV plates C to C2 are noneresilient 75 and of a relatively soft sheet metal material.
lIt vis apparent the specific illustrations shown above have been given by way oi illustration and not by way of limitation and that the structures above described are subject to wide variation and modification without departing from the scope 5 or intent of the invention, all of 4which variations and modiiications are to be included within the scope of the present invention.
