The present invention relates to a clip and particularly relates to a clip for holding ribbons and other narrow fabrics.
With the usual rolls of ribbons, braids, tapes and other narrow fabrics, it has been customary to insert a pin through the end of the ribbon which pin will also penetrate through the other layers of ribbon upon the spool.
The insertion of this pin will often mar or deface a considerable quantity of ribbon with the result that the'quality and value of the ribbon is greatly decreased and with repeated insertion of the pins, large quantities of the ribbon may become unsalable.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide an improved, simple, inexpensive and readily detached clip for spools 'or reels of narrow fabrics, such as ribbons, which may be readily used in connection with the flanged type spool with assurance that the fabric will be held in position and will not be permitted to unravel, and at the same time, the layers of the ribbon will not be defaced or marred.
Other objects will be obvious or will be-readily apparent during the course of the following specification.
In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found most satisfactory to form a clip or holder device of sheet metal having a finger resiliently to press the'end of the ribbon reel and having an extension which will enable engagement with the flange of a ribbon reel or spool and will also have a slotted attachment permitting movement of the resilient spring linger as the ribbon is consumed or sold.
According to one embodiment, the finger is carried in a slideway in a U-shaped member which is designed to clip on to the flange or side element of the ribbon or other narrow fabric spool.
In another embodiment, the flange is provided with a radial slot which engages an extension of the finger to provide a slideway to enable adjustment of the finger with the reel of ribbon.
In the latter case, it is possible to provide graduations on the edges of the slot together with numerical indications which will enable a quick and accurate estimate to be made of the amount of ribbon left upon the spool.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and will illustrate a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of one type of the clip according to the present invention, removed from the ribbon reel.
Figure 2 is a side view upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an edge-perspective view of a ribbon reel showing the clip attached with a portion of one side flange broken away more clearly to show the attachment.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view on the line -5- 5 of Figure 4 and upon enlarged scale as compared to Figure 4.
Referring to the embodiment of Figures 1 to 5, the clip device A is provided with a resilient finger B and with a slider member C.
The finger, as shown in Figure 4 is designed to contact the coil of ribbon D which is held upon the spool E with the side flanges F and G.
Referring specifically to Figures 1 to 3, the finger B has a contact portion H) with an outturned end portion II and a bent inside portion I2 which has a right angular extension 13. The portion I3 has the upturned and outturned resilient lugs H) which fit into and engage the sides of the slot 21 in the clip member A.
The lugs l5 cooperate with the portions l6 and I! to retain said finger B attached to said clip member -A. A slideway is formed between the bosses or ridges It for the portions ['6 and ll of the element l3. The slot 2 tapers slightly in the direction 20 and the lugs l'5 have slight resiliency so that the finger element will be held tightly in position as it is moved in the direction 20 in said slot 21 to take up the decrease in the amount of fabric.
The clip member A is also provided with an external gripping finger 24 with a bent contact portion 25.
The spool E is provided with a central block or annulus 2| which receives the-coil of ribbon D, said coil of ribbon being enclosed between the side flanges F and G.
The central thimble 22 holds said flanges in position upon the wooden center piece or annulus 2|.
In attachment, the clip A is forced upon the flange G in the manner indicated in Figures 4 and 5, the space 23 being such that there will be a tight grip of said flange G.
This grip may be adjusted by turning the finger 24 inwardly so that its bent portion 25 will closely press the exterior face of the flange G in the manner shown in Figure 5.
At the same time, the inside face of the coil of ribbon should press against the ridges to enhance the frictional grip. The finger B may then be moved until it strikes the end portion 25 of the ribbon reel D, as shown in Figure 4.
When the ribbon is to be sold or merchandised the clip is removed and then the ribbon out ofi at any desired length and then the clip reapplied.
With each new application of the clip, the finger B is pressed against the end portion 26 of the ribbon to hold it in position. The frictional and resilient connection between the lugs l5 and the slot 21 and between the clip A and the flange G holds the clip in position and at the same time prevents slippage or unwinding of the ribbon.
The clips illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 are inexpensive to manufacture, may be readily used in connection with the usual flange type of ribbon or narrow fabric reel or holder and they do not require any particular skill or adjustment on the part of the sales person or attendant.
The adjustment of the finger against the ribbon end 26 is substantially automatic and normally accompanies the positioning of the device shown in Figures 1 to 3 upon the flange G.
Although the clip of the present invention has been particularly described in connection with ribbons, tapes, and so forth, of a Woven nature, it is obviously also applicable to reels carrying motion picture film, Cellophane strips, or even metal strips.
It is apparent that the specific illustrations shown above have been given by way of illustration and not by Way of limitation and that the structures above described are subject to wide variation and modification without departing from the scope or intent of the invention, all of which variations and modifications are to be included within the scope of the present invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a spool having a reel of a narrow fabric and side flanges, a clip to hold the end of the fabric comprising a resilient finger to press the end of the ribbon and an extension from the end of said finger engaging one of said flanges, said extension being slotted and said finger having as slider portion fitting in said slot.
2. A resilient ribbon or narrow fabric holder comprising a finger member, a transverse extension from one end of said finger, said extension having slot engaging lugs and a slotted metal clip member in the slot of which said lugs are engaged.
3. A resilient ribbon or narrow fabric holder comprising a finger member, a transverse extension from one end of said finger, said extension having slot engaging lugs and a slotted metal clip member in the slot of which said lugs are engaged, the edges of said slot converging toward one end thereof.
4. A resilient ribbon or narrow fabric holder comprising a finger member, a transverse extension from one end of said finger, said extension having slot engaging lugs, and a slotted metal clip member in the slot of which said lugs are engaged, said clip member having ridges between which said lugs are mounted.
5. A resilient ribbon or narrow fabric holder comprising a finger member, a transverse extension from one end of said finger, said extension having slot engaging lugs, and a slotted metal clip member in the slot of which said lugs are engaged, said clip having an inside finger member carrying said slot and an outside finger member bent inwardly, said last mentioned finger member being designed to grasp the flange of a narrow fabric reel.
