UNITED STATES PATENT Demon.
JOSIAH M. HEAD, OF EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DAMPERS FOR STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,600, dated December 16, 1879 application filed October 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Belt known that I, JOSIAH 1\1.BEAD, of Everett, in the county of Middlesex, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of stoves in which the direct draft to the escape-flue is more or less circuitous--notably six boiler stoves or ranges; and the object of this invention is to provide a more direct and larger passage between the combustion-chamber or fire pot and the escape-port.
1n six-boiler stoves or ranges it has been deemed necessary to locate the escape-port either upon the right or left side from the fire pot or chamber; and in order to provide the holes most remote from the tire with heat, a partition has been extended from the side of the escapcport between the last two holes on that side of the stove and between the port and the fire pot or chamber, in order to compel the products of combustion before reachin g the escape-port to pass under both the most remote boilerholes. The damper has generally been arranged to form a continuation of this partition. Iherefore the products of combustion have to pass around two angles, one of them very abrupt, and through a passage suddenly reduced in size.
Where the draft is very strong this con struction answers very well; but in slow drafts it has been foundobjectionable on account of the time taken in the kindling of the fire.
Reference is made, in explaining the nature of my invention,to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in
' which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a stove with a portion broken out, exposing the construction of my improvement. Fig. 2 1s a vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
The partition plate or damper H, between the boiler-holes B and B extending outwardly from the side of the stove between the escapeport and the fire pot or chamber, instead of being permanently fixed, as in former constructions, is attached by hinges h to the plate h, and it is closed by meansof the damper M, which is also hinged to plate 71., but at right angles to the damper H, and a little in advance of one end thereof, so that in opening the dampers the damper M is thrown over by the handle m, and the damperH falls by gravity with one end resting on the end of damper M. In closing, the damper M lifts the damper H and holds it in position.
If it is not necessary to use the damper H,
it may be closed and locked in place by a button, 1L2, or in any other desirable way, in which case the damper M is used as now customary.
I do not confine myself to the specific con nection by which the plate forming one portion of the damper operates the plate forming the remainder, but may use any suitable connecting device, the object of my invention being to provide in six-boiler ranges or stoves a more direct and unrestricted passage from the fire pot or chamber to the escape-port than is now used.
The plate or damper H may be connected with the plate h or the top plate, E, in any desirable manner, and any suitable stop, abutment, or shoulder for supporting its outer end when it acts as a divisionplate may be employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a six-boiler range or stove, the division-plate H, adapted to be used as a damper,
in connection with the plate M, when desired, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a six-boiler range or. stove, the combination of the fire pot or chamber 0, the escape-port D, the damper M, and the plate H, adapted to be used either as a portion of the damper, in connection with the plate M, or as a divisionplate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOSIAH M. READ.
