Description

L. & J. BAUMLE. 1 Machige for Cleansing Intestines.
N51 222,567. T Patentea Dec. I6, 1879? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEOIOLD BAUMLE AND JOHN BAUMLE, OF MILWAUKEE, WIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CLEANSING INTESTINES.
Specimlat ibn forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,567, dated December 16, 1879 application filed April 28, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEOPOLD BAUMLE and JOHN BAUMLE, both of the city of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State:
represents a side view of our invention. Fig. l 2 represents a transverse section of the same.
Fig. 3 represents an end view of the same.
The object of our invention is to provide a device for cleaning intestines of animals preparatory to using them as coverings for sausage, consisting, essentially, of the corrugated rollers having yielding bearings, one pair of which rollers is provided with loose elastic coverings, all of which is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- A represents a substantial frame, by which the rollers and gears are supported and retained in their proper relative position. B and B and G and C are corrugated or fluted rollers, between which the intestines are passed in the process of cleaning. D D D D are shafts, which are secured within the respective rollers, and revolve with them. The upper shafts D D are each provided with movable journal-boxes E at each of their ends, thus allowing the respective rollers B and B and U and U to be adjusted nearer to or farther from each other, as occasion requires, which end is accomplished by means of the adjusting hand-screws F, which act upon the bar G, which bar G is connected with the movable journal-boxes E, and thus press the rollers B and O downward by turning the screws F forward. The rollers G and C are each covered with rubber cloths, or other elastic flexible fabrics, H, which serve to more effectually cleanse the intestines, and will permit of a closer adjustment of the rollers, with less liability of tearing the intestines as they are passed betweenthem. The elastic covering is but loosely attached to rollers G O, and yields to enter into the. pressions under it. I is a crank by which the device is operated.
J, K, L, M, and N are a chain of gears of equal size, by which motion is commn..icated from the crank I to the several rollers, as .shown in Fig. 1.
Our machine is operated as follows: The ends of the intestines are placed between the uncovered corrugated rollers B and B, when the crank I is revolved in the direction shown by the arrow, which movement causes the intestines to be drawn between them and toward the rollers G and 0, when their ends are placed between the rollers O and O, which rollers all move simultaneously and with the same speed, and thus the intestines are caused to pass through both sets of rollers at the same time.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The machine herein described for cleansing intestines of cattle, consisting, essentially, of the corrugated rollers B B O 0: having yielding bearings, one pair 'of which is provided with loose elastic coverings H H, constructed and arranged as shown and described.
