3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved lamp element, and more particularly to a lamp element for incorporation in floor and other lamps to serve as a safety lamp.
Safety lamps have heretofore been provided in the base of lamps, consisting of a small globe hidden in a large insert under the base, and generally enclosed. These are difcult to remove when burnt out and also frequently overheat, with possible severe damage. In the present invention a small safety lamp is provided in the upper portion of the lamp, and in a manner such that it may readily be removed, and so ventilated that no overheating is possible. Moreover, by being positioned away from the base, even if overheating occurs, there is substantially no possibility of fire. It can be seen from any point in the room.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a lamp showing the safety lamp unit; Figure 2 is a vertical section taken along the line 2 of Figure 3; Figure 3 is a cross-section taken along the line 3 in Fig. 1`.
The safety light element I0 comprises two elements, a socket member II and a supporting member I2. The socket member is provided at the bottom with .a screw threaded opening I3 adapted to be secured to the correspondingly threaded tubular column I4 of the lamp I5. Within the base of the socket member is a socket I6 provided with suitable electrical connections. The socket is mounted upon a nipple 40 which is inserted in the column I4 and held in place by the collar 4I. A pair of wires I'l in parallel with the socket connection is carried upwardly to provide current for the lamp proper.
The socket member is considerably enlarged above the socket to provide space for a light bulb I8, and also considerable excess space, so that the fingers may be inserted and unscrew and grasp the bulb. In the vicinity of the bulb a large number of small perforations I9 is provided for cooling ventilation and for visual and decorative effect.
A similar line of perforations 20 is carried about the top of the socket member.
The top of the socket member is substantially flat, but four upstanding lugs 2| are provided with grooves 22. Into these grooves the tongues 23 of the supporting member I2 fit.
The supporting member I2 includes a threaded opening 24 at the top which interiits with the correspondingly threaded lamp member 25. Immediately below this point the member I2 widens (Cl. 24U-81) to correspond to the socket member, and is penetrated by four openings 26, at least one of which should be large enough to permit ready removal of the bulb I8. These openings divide the support into four leg portions 2l, each of which has 5 a tongue 23 which interts with the groove 22 to lock the supporting and socket members together.
One of the legs 21 is provided on its underside with a channel 42 within which the wires II are 10 concealed. The channel is preferabls7 enclosed with an opening at each end, but it may be closed at the sides only and suitable anchoring means provided for the retention of the wires therein.
In assembling the lamp the socket I6 is wired .and installed, and the wire I'I threaded completely through the lamp, after which the socket and supporting members are interlocked, and are preferably then fixed in position by pins or 20 screws 30 which are inserted in suitably drilled openings.
The bulb I8 may be removed by inserting the fingers in the openings 26.
The switch 43 controls the safety lamp. It 25 may be made to control all the lights, separately or in combination, if desired.
The complete lamp is strong, safe, and very decorative. It also is easily assembled.
Obviously, other interlocking means may be 30 adopted and the tongue Iand groove elements may be reversed.
I claim:
1. A safety lamp element adapted for incorporation in a floor lamp and comprising; a lower 35 member adapted to be mounted on the standard of la floor lamp, and provided with a plurality of small perforations for diffusing light and having an enlarged annular upper edge portion, an upper member provided with means for sup- 40 porting the main illuminating portion of the lamp, and having an enlarged annular lower edge portion, the two enlarged edge portions being secured in abutment relationship, socket means for holding a miniature light in the lower member, and the upper member having a plurality of holes approximately the diameter of the light, whereby the light may be removed by inserting lingers in the holes .and removing the light through one of the holes.
2. A floor lamp including; a standard and a safety lamp element comprising; a lower member adapted to be mounted on the standard and provided with a plurality of small perforations for diffusing light and having an enlarged anwhereby the light may be removed by inserting lingers in the holes and removing the light through one of said holes.
3. A oor lamp as set forth in claim 2 in which the upper and lower members of the safety lamp 5 element com-prise the sole supporting means for the main illuminating portion of the lamp.
