4 Claims.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularlyto an improved supporting and driving shaft for a platen rollwhich will facilitate removal and replacement of the platen roll.
It has been found that in order to get proper tYD B legibility, it is desirable to be able to use either a hard or a soft rubber platen, depending on how many copies are to be made. Heretofore, it has been extremely difllcult to remove the platen-roll of a typewriting machine, such as a tabulating machine, and to make the change usually required the help of a competent mechanic. One of the Objects of the present in-f vention is to provide a shaft; that will enable the platen roll to be changed, as desired, by the regular operator of the machine.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a broken front elevational view of a tabulating machine embodying the invention; Figure 2, a broken elevational view, on an enlarged scale, showing the platen roll and supporting shaft removed from the machine; Figure 3, a sectional view, taken as indicated at line 3 .of Figure 2; Figure 4, a view of the clamping section' on the supporting shaft with the shaft turned 90 from the view shown in Figure'2;
and Figure 5, a sectional view, takenas indicated at line 5 of Figure 2.
In the embodiment illustrated, the invention is shown applied to a tabulating machine of well known construction. The machine has a pair of side frames 6 and 1 in which the platen roll supporting shaft is journalled. The shaft is made up of two sections,'the section 8 being journalled in the side frame I and the wlthdrawable section 8 being normally journalled in the sideframe 0. 1
As best shown in Figures 1, 2, and 4, the short section of the shaft has a journal portion l0 and is provided at its outer end II with atrunnion which carries ratchet gears I2 which are driven through a suitable drive mechanism I; by an electric motor H. The inner portion of the shaft has an integrally formed bifurcated clamping block II which affords a, socket l6 toreceive the innerend of the withdrawable section of the shaft. The block is drilled and tapped to receive machine screws H which may be provided with socket heads Ila to enable the device to clamp the withdrawable section firmly in the position shown in Figure 2.

The knob I8 is provided with a sleeve 20' which is journalled on the shaft 9 and has a number of slots 2| which are adaptedto make a splined connection with the end gear 22 of the platen roll 23. The planetary gear, arrangement between the knobs l8 and I9 enables the platen roll 23 to be rotated adjustably with respect to the shaft 9, but no invention is claimed in this application in connection with that part of the device.
The tabulating machine is shown provided with a continuous-form feeding device 21 which is driven by the gear 22 through driving gears 25.

When it is desired to change the platen roll in a machine equipped with the present invention,
it is merely necessary to remove the stationery" from around the platen, loosen the screws l1, and pull the shaft 8 clear out through the side frame 6. The platen roll may then be lifted out of its carriage and another-roll placed in its position. The shaft may then be projected through the frame 6 and the hollow platen roll until the end portion is received by the socket member ll Upon tightening of the screws ll the machine is again ready to operate.
It will be understood that the section 8 of the shaft is not disturbed in changing the platen roll. When the section 0 has been inserted through the platen roll and engaged by the clamping member IS, the platen roll 23 is secured against lateral shifting by having its left end, as viewed in Figure 2, abutting against the member I! and its right is properly aligned with the gears 25 and the platen is firmly held in position.

no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom for some modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine having a pair of side frames and a rotatable hollow platen roll between said frames, means for driving and supporting the platen roll, comprising: a driven stub v shaft joumalled in one side frame and provided at one end with a gripping device between said 40 end is held by the sleeve 20. Thus the gear 22 v side frames; and a withdrawable shaft adapted to impale the platen roll and having its end engaged and supported by said gripping device, said withdrawable shaft having a driving connection with said platen roll.
2. A device as specified in claim 1, in which the gripping device comprises a bufurcated block formed integrally with the stub shaft and affor-ding an axially disposed socket to receive the end of-the withdrawable shaft, said block having screw-members for adjustably clamping said shaft.
3. A drive. shaft for a hollow platen roll of a typewrlting machine having a pair of side frames, comprising: a shaft section adapted to be journalled in one of the side frames of the typewriting machine, said section having at its outer enda driving gear and at its inner end, between said side frames, a bifurcated clamping socket member equipped with clamping screws; and a withdrawable shaft section adapted to be projected through and journalled in an ,opposite side frame of said typewriting machine, the inner end of said withdrawable section being formed to fit into said clamping socket, and said shaft having a driving connection for the platen roll.
4. A drive shaft as specified in claim 3, in which the socket member forms an abutment to limit axial movement of a platen roll in one direction and the withdrawable section has a sleeve to limit JOHN E. SCHAEFER.
